Denise is gone and that is why it is important to validate what is to be validated about her time and influence . This is not about anyone specifically anymore. This is about posterity. The truth needs to be told and none of us should take lightly how things are to be remembered for future generations to come. . It may seem like nothing to us but once the current generations pass on Vanity/Denise should be noted for whatever part she played be it V6 , Wonderful Ass and (inspiration). It does matter. I don't mean to be a killjoy here on the amazing Org. but, IMO, being a fan or fam means more than collecting every scrap of music, every photo, program, t-shirt, etc...it means honoring, acknowledging and rememberig Prince with the precision, attention-to-detail and passion he brought to his own work. For the period in which they composed, recorded, rehearsed and performed with him, having imput on that era of material makes absolute sense to me. There have been so many boots flooding all over the place, a lot of them sound such a hot mess -from a tech and musicial perspective, for me it would be a relief to know the music was in CAPABLE hands people who were actual co-creators of the soundscape from that era. Unless you've ever performed or been part of a band dynamic, it's difficult to explain just how much a band is a unit that moves and communicates in sync through the music they compose, learn, record and perfor together. It's an interdependent, (technically) conversational process that enables you understand how each other's brain works, what moves the people involved, their strengths, their weaknesses, their preferences, their favorite things insofar as musical aesthetic, their go-to bag of musical tricks, etc. Some Johnny-Come-Lately Music Suit or random Leagle Eagle appointee for the estate is not necessarily equipped to do the musically archeological digging, curating, nor restoration required to polish up a lot of this material and present to the public. There's simply a level of technical and musical discernment the Revolution, as a band, will possess by virtue of the depth of their experience with Prince that would make their inclusion in vault release plans a no-brainier for me. | |

It's the fans who were blessed to walk the planet as the same time as Prince and witness his genius in real time, that are going to pass down his art to future generations. How we remember and the recording of facts are important right now for just that reason. I'm sure Wendy and Susannah have wonderful asses too , but if this song was inspired by/gifted to Vanity for hers (and her personality) noted by several in Prince's camp as such, then that's what needs to be told. Good point. Our posts on this site will probably be looked to hundreds of years from now when someone is researching Prince. The last thing we want is for them to misrepresent some of these facts. None of us has all of the answers, but it is easy to see when someone has an agenda. The previous poster that went from Wendy wrote the opening to Purple Rain to she "influenced" it because she hung around the band for a long time is dangerous dialogue. No one said she wrote/influenced it because she hung around the band for a long time.

Yea right. If she wrote it then why couldn't she play it live on Aug 3 1983 when it was recorded? Prince re-recorded the intro because she couldn't play it. It is no slight against Wendy. She was a good band member, but was just learning the instrument. It is a huge stretch to suggest that she somehow taught Prince something about the guitar at that stage in her career. | |

Where did you hear that? I've seen the video from that show ... and what's on the record in terms of intro sounds exactly like what she's playing, to me. He re-recorded parts of the solo, cut a verse, and added a screaming crowd, but it doesn't sound like he edited her guitar part. | |

She did play it live. They went back and did work on the song in the studio. Dude, you are talking about a guitarist, who's first live performance is the Dance Benefit show, the excitement, the nerves, the extreme heat Why is it so hard to believe that in the company of the band in the warehouse that she didn't come up with the line? Is it no different from Lisa & Wendy composing the strings at the end?

Of course they should be consulted about the songs. They were the people who were in the studio with him during that. Any album that contains their work should have their input. Obviously the producer of the album would have the final say, but to not reach out to anyone who worked on the album seems to be short sited.
Prince gave each of the members of The Revolution a percentage of the profit from his work with them. He knew that they were a valuable part of the process and because many of the tracks he recorded were based on jams with the band, they have earned the right to be consulted on future releases. They were vital in the recording of many of his songs. Not every track involved them, but many of them did.
I wish that they'd been asked about the outtakes on the Purple Rain re-release. I'd love to hear what they recall about those tracks.
For any future release, I think it would benefit WB to have the band/singers/engineers comment about the songs and I'd give weight to their comments about Prince's thoughts about the music. They were there for that and knew the situation in a way that no one else would. I'd also consult any managers if possible as they'd also know what the plan was for those tracks.

If ALL the bands, engineers, associates could be professional and put biases aside yes but just reading threads and interviews with past bandmates and engineers etc. I do not want it. If there is music that is worthy of being released no bandmates needed. Leave them all out- I do not need any of their commentary, they cannot be Prince's brain. Prince is gone so not one can be his brain and that is or a totally different thread. . I respect and thank ALL bands-incl. the Revolution but at this point I want the music to be about Prince and even the discussions seem pointless because the bandmates did not create. PRINCE is the genius. Prince is the reason for the music, he is the Mozart. You do not need to be a bandmate or associate to hear good music, catalogue it and release it. . I want the videos, music and films form the vault. Let me hear it, see it, and I do not need any bandmates opinion, thoughts, whatever. I see how things are working and it has taken away from Prince in my opinion. . The Vault should not be about the bandmates but Prince. Leave them all out of it. I want this handled as a real excavation of Prince's music as if it is a dig of grand historical finds. I am already weary of the attempts to make it about individual personalities and not about great historical pieces that need to be preserved for generations to come. Love the music,the poems, the films, the vidoes. Respect the one who created the art.
I love museums. I think Princes Vault/Vaults need to taken as serious artifacts, precious pieces of history and finds. . Prince was a once in a lifetime person and left so much for us and generations to come. The Vault needs to be respected as an historical gold mine. It needs to be handled in a way that is unbiased in all aspects. It needs to be treated for the historical site it is.

Everyone with info should be consulted. But members of the Revolution have unfortunately proven time and again that they can't be trusted to get the facts right. And also rather than using interviews after Prince's death to further Prince's legacy they have taken every opportunity to build their own. I fear they would use the vault material in the same way. | |
