Jesse Johnson @ First Avenue MN 12.2.2016
with NPG musicians Sonny T & Michael Bland to Honor Prince and Jimi Hendrix
The repertoire included songs associated with Johnson, the Time and Jimi Hendrix — as well as maybe a Prince tune or two that Johnson was doing before the Purple One died.
“It’s always felt strange. I always felt out of place there. Like I was in Prince’s living room,”
“I’ll always be this blue-collar Midwestern kid who bought his first Stratocaster for $626.87 after pumping gas at Rock Island, Ill., before they had self-serve,” he said from his Los Angeles home. “You can call [Prince] a competitive person but I never looked at it like competition. I used to say to him, ‘Why you worry about me? You’re Prince. I’m nobody in the world that you’re in.’ ”

My love for music is so deep and so high, I feel that the relationship between you and I is sacred. So for those attending our upcoming shows, (Sonny, Mike, & I) we want to send you home with your sonic palate satisfied and better yet, "With your mind blown". In 2016, Jesse was dubbed Guitar Hero as he returned to Minneapolis First Avenue to showcase his guitar prowess. Leading a ferocious line up that included bass extraordinaire Sonny Thompson and drummer phenom Michael Bland -the trio left the house in awe, as they chanted more. Fame writer John Bream for the Star Tribune, wrote two high profile articles on Jesse before and after the show. The latter says it all "Jesse Johnson soars as guitar hero in power trio marathon at First Avenue ." | |
