It's no worse than any of the silly songs on Vanity 6 or Appolonia 6.

If there was no Killing At The Soda Shop, then there would be no Marz. Some wouldn't care about that as PE gets criticized a lot here but I'm saying that Killing At The Soda shop is that punk new wave Prince and company we're into in that prime 80-83 era. It would fit on Vanity 6 album. Oooh She Wa Wa style

I dig Jill's emotional vocals compared to Lisa's detached ones. I mean I love them both and it's good to get two distinct voice versions of it.

Our Destiny is definitely unfinished, you can hear the crowd/intro from the birthday show. Prince's piano on Wednesday is gorgeous. Looks like I know what I'm transcribing this weekend...

for When's Day (Wedneday) Susan Rogers called it an incidental song and referred to Jill having sung it in Purple Rain. I assume that means it was filmed and there is the part where Prince comes in and Wendy and Lisa are there with Jill... I believe that is when it was meant to be in the movie. But was cut!

Prince sang the song in the 83' piano rehearsals..

Okay... so this thread got moved to Associated Artists... WHY???!!!! I mean, it's better than what I thought at first, which was that it just got "disappeared" for some reason. But, to my mind, any new Prince outtakes (and these definitely are THAT, even if they also are Jill Jones outtakes) should be discussed on the Prince forum. I get moving stuff about people's non-Prince-tied careers, but not this.

Ah well. I found it, at least.

Killin' at the Soda Shop--I have no idea what I expected, but that wasn't it. biggrin I don't know what to think yet. I wasn't even sure it was Jill when it started. Certainly different from what was finally released by her--didn't really take advantage of her voice. It could have been one of the "6"'s just as well. Not many of these straightforward narrative songs ever made it out, but Prince does seem to have done a few of them. Weird. From reading about the song before it leaked, I really didn't expect that sort of "punk" sound from a song with a Clare Fisher arrangement. Just plain odd.

Wednesday--yeah, sounds like a segue from a musical. Interesting. But only somewhat.

As to Our Destiny. Jill certainly acts more in her vocal than Lisa does--I just have to decide which style of performance fits the song better for me. The balance between vocal and music is something I wish were worked out more fully. I'd like it to be part of a fuller arrangement, and more of a piece with the music in the mix. But, you know... it isn't. For whatever reason--maybe because it wasn't finished back then... or maybe because Jill finished her part just now.

As to when Jill recorded the vocal tracks... I hope she'll say. I'm keeping them either way, I'd just like to know whether to think of these as entirely Prince-directed or more Jill revisiting and taking another shot at them. Still with Prince's musical performance, just not quite the same as the real thing. None of the vocals really sound like the standard on the Paisley album, and I haven't listened enough to her more recently to make a guess based on what she sounds like now. So I don't know what's up.

I would argue that it's she hates the Revolution, and it's straight up envy that her version wasn't used on the PR deluxe. Because $$$$. If OD/RG wasn't on this set, she would have never leaked these tracks. Why not leak them after he died, or when PR deluxe was announced? She waited because she simply wants to steal some thunder, and put a dent in it.

Having said all that, she deserves credit on the stuff she was on, of course. My point was more about "Our Destiny".

The songs are also on YourListen.com.

Yep, I just found this and llistened to my two crappy versions. Right under our noses!

Although, I swear I had a MP3 version of "Intimate moments" where one of the songs was labelled "Wednesday".

Right thanks I can never remember what it is labelled as.

when U say he sings Wednesday, you mean you hear him say Wednesday? That is what I meant. From the intimate moments piano session and the general snippet I never heard 'Wednesday'

just listening 2 Eavesdropped In Intimate Moments

and there is a 7:55min piano medley from 1983

Strange Relationship

International Lover/Do Me Baby

Wednesday

I had the little snippett of Wednesday() but somehow forgot this piano medley

Killing at the Soda shop's beat is reminiscent of 'Sister'! Fun!

Interesting to hear the strings here that were later used in Graffiti Bridge!

Wednesday could have been on disc 2 of the unreleased songs.

Our Destiny - these vocals have a bit too much cockiness and swagger for me, I think I prefer Lisa's more gentle style tbh!

Regarding "Love Machine", I very very much doubt Jill would have knowingly done a lipsync to someone else's vocal.

I think Jill probably did that vocal originally and then Prince switched it out with Elisa after filming.

Yeah that is what she talked about after the filming.

Give me all 3 versions!!! lol I love when there is a different take on the perspective via the vessel.
So is the JJ version a recent one sung over an instrumental of the song. I read something about that earlier in the thread I think.

I don't think so. True, sessions for her second album and Corporate World happened in Summer 89 so she may have recorded a version that hasn't been documented (we keep finding out that she's recorded versions of songs we never knew she had, after all...), but by the time the film was shot, the Corporate World Morris/Elisa version had long been in the can, and was obviously the one intended for the movie from the beginning. Even if we admit that Jill had recorded a version for CW before Elisa was overdubbed on it, I can't imagine Prince bothering to use that one for the shoot, to then use Elisa's cut.

Jill was pissed to death when shooting GB anyway, so I guess she just did whatever she was told and flew back to London ASAP.

I totally agree.

But I will say this: There have been times in the last year or so that Jill has mentioned (ranted) on Facebook about family and being in the midst of something. Frankly, I think Prince dating Susannah, and having Jill around might have caused friction. They both were or wanted to be his #1. I also think based on that theory/idea, Wendy & Lisa (or whoever) might have kind of gotten in the middle and told Jill to back the fuck up. I mean, Susannah and Wendy are twins, a bond only a few understand. So of course Wendy (and her then girlfriend Lisa) are going to defend family to an outsider (of sorts). Those girls (and Jonathan, and David etc) all grew up together from early, early on. It's not even a cat fight, it's a family affair. Jill might have gotten the "back da fuq up" from W&L & company, and got pissed at that, and held a grudge ever since. However, once Susannah wasn't with Prince anymore, she was obviously back around in 1989/1990 for Graffiti Bridge, so why not make a move on him then if she wanted to be with him? (I'm not saying she did want him again, but we don't know.)

Multiply that "back up" business with Bobby, Fink, and Mark... and she could have felt ganged up on had they said something to her as well. (Maybe not.)

So, her anger is sort of placed correctly. BUT only about 1%. Ultimately she's in control of her own actions, and her deeds back then, good or bad. Her angst, at this point 33 years later, makes her sound petty as fuck, and like she's truly the jilted ex-girlfriend trying to diss all the new heifers that came after her. She sorta sounds like Sheila, talking about how she had a 'special bond' with Prince, and she was the only one who knew how he clipped his toenails or whatthefuckever. She called them a Milli Vanilli band, but you know what - no one's asking her to sing "G-Spot" right now. No one's asking her to regroup and sing "Mia Bocca". It's The Revolution that's filling small clubs across the U.S. and playing that music. She could have been part of many things, but chose not to. That's on her at this point, and no one else. So yeah, her anger is ultimately misplaced.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
