"Stanning" I took a little trip over to another website where folks talk about Prince, and came away with the term "stanning". Apparently this is a verb which describes a fam who cheers for one protege, and protects and defends that protege as being "the best" protege, or the "most loved ever" by Prince, or Prince's "true soulmate". Would someone please tell me what goes on in the minds of folks who do this? I am literally trying to figure this out from a psychological standpoint. Bonus points to anyone who IS a "stan" (the apparent assigned noun for this phenomena) who can describe what they're thinking when they "stan", or how they see or feel about the protege for WHOM they "stan". Thank you.

I think from what I've seen in the Non-Prince Music forum, it is a term for anyone who is a 'fan' of someone, that term has been used for MJ fans Beyonce fans etc

Yes, I've seen it used for MJ too. In fact it seems there Prince "stans" "VS" MJ "stans". But where does the "st" come from? First, the etymology of the term would be helpful perhaps.

I know nothing of the origins or technical usage of this.

I think the "stan" phrase started way back in the song by Eminem where the guy in the song turns out to be a kookoo over the top fan who felt some type of way and ends up murdering his pregnant girlfriend because he's angry at Eminem for not giving his lil brother an autograph.
Calling someone a "stan" isn't a compliment. It implies a certain delusional instability.
Oh, I forgot...the guy's name was Stan in the song.
So a "stan" is a shorthand way of saying an over the top unstable fan.
See?

You said it so much simpler than I did.
Thank you!

Exactly as described above:
stan
stan/
informal
noun
noun: stan; plural noun: stans
verb
verb: stan; 3rd person present: stans; past tense: stanned; past participle: stanned; gerund or present participle: stanning
Origin
early 21st century: probably with allusion to the 2000 song “Stan” by the American rapper Eminem, about an obsessed fan.

Wow! Interesting! There is an actual dictionary definition of this! I learn something new every day.

LOL....I think angel understands the definition. What she seems to be asking in this forum in particular is why? At least that is how I understood the OP. [Edited 5/17/17 12:29pm] Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

so it seems most of the time I've read people using it toward other members on the org, it is being used out of place/context.

I had forgotten about that Stan song...lol... Thanks!
But I was feeling that Dido song back in the day...

[Edited 5/17/17 12:29pm] Thanks, BNoz, because I didn't know the origin of the word but mostly I am trying to understand the psychology of it, yes. Is it that folks imagine themselves as the protege? Or perhaps the protege reminds them of themselves or a member of their family in looks or the like? Perhaps skin tone or eyes or demeanor?

Right, Sal. I am getting that this is not a totally positive term all the time, although on the other website some folks didn't mind describing themselves as such. Very interesting, all this lingo I have learned in this last year.

It's not a compliment.
If they're using it towards themselves then my guess would be that they are ignorant as to it's actually meaning that they are mentally unstable.
Even in interveiws when the song was popular, Eminem describes the fan Stan as an unstable/crazed stalker.
But as for why folks "stan"? Who knows, maybe for the same reason anyone likes anyone as a regular fan...Something about them speaks to you and resonates with you.
Just in the case of "stans", they take it waaay farther than would be considered mentally healthy in any direction.
Some fans of some celebrities are by definition "stans" because as a group their organized behaviour on the whole shows signs that the greater portion of them is unstable. I won't name any celebrities, but let's just say if everytime you meet the fans of a particular celebrity they all/most seem like they should be under the care of a mental hygeine professional, there ya go...STAN.

"Something about them speaks to you." Thanks, LBrent. I can certainly see myself as feeling that way about Prince, and feeling protective of his legacy and memory because I identify with a lot of what I feel he went through. But I don't see feeling that protective or strongly about a protege, espscially to the point of wanting people who don't agree with me to suffer, or defending and protecting to the point of causing chaos etc. I don't even do that when it comes to Prince - let alone a protege! I'm thinking it must have something to do with the "stan" confusing themselves with the protégée. [Edited 5/17/17 15:33pm]

Could be. I have stuck up for various purple assocites who are being bullied though, even if I don't consider myself a "fan" of theirs.
I'm a Pfan first and foremost and always. But sometimes when I see bullying I can't help myself from defending the one being bullied.
I don't think I've tipped over into P standom, but some of my loved ones might disagree.

I also will defend sometimes. Maybe there's the sometimes expected defending of a protege - and then there are the real extremists.

I think that anyone who comes to a messageboard for a particular person stans- Whether is for the music, style, or personality of the celebrity. I do not think a person is mentally ill or unstable to celebrate a person. People are stans for many things. I have seen it on this board for Mayte, Andy, The Revolution and Vanity. I do not think there is anything wrong with it nor do I make fun. I think it is all part of the celebrity and fandom. If it were not for "fans" or "stans" there would be no need for websites for a particular celebrity dedicated to them. What I am finding amusing is that the attempt to belittle some for doing what all people do on celebrity /entertainment sites. I would like to know why the bait is going on to try to make people squelch it. There have been threads and even silly ones about so many people in Prince's circle band members , associates. This section is called Associated artists and people. If there is to be no talk of the the associated artists and people I would not come to this part of the forum.

Yes, but what you're describing is being a fan.
The definition of being a "stan" is all that mixed with stalkerishness and beung unstable.
Like the gal who is a P stan and living in the delusion that they married secretly by the CIA...and the guy who stalked the gal from Poltergeist and was so "in love" with er that he killed her...and the gal who went to live in the woods behind PP...and that guy who shot at the President cuz he was "in love" with Jody Foster and wanted her to notice him.
Those are "stans"

Yes but the original post mentions defending a protoge or personality - I think that is something that naturally happens on a celebrity message board. There are discussions over NPG being better than the Revolution- each band has people who favor them; of course which wife was better M1 or M2, then the protoge fans- it is all the fun of a message board. I do not get the offense or "psychology " of it - people like who and what they like. The Stanning you describe are unstable people but most folks are just having a good time supporting a celeb .

Those are some examples but I was thinking more of people who devote thousands of hours to someone associated with a star, considering certain people to be a "threat" to their efforts. It's been quite an interesting phenomena to observe. Maybe there's a really good explanation I haven't thought of yet.

Thank you, Vashtix!!! I agree with you 100 percent. Here lately, some people are so busy "stanning" for Mayte that, some days, the org looks like Mayte.org. The delusional people you are describing, LBrent, are stalkers, plain and simple.

Prince brought quite a few people along for his ride and many of them ended up being personalities themselves from Andre Cymone, Morris Day, Carmen Electra and others. There is nothing wrong with discussing others. I am interested in knowing why you feel they should not be discussed.

Agreed, Vashtix. There's normal expected stuff and there's even really loving a protege. That's cool. Very cool. WGAT I'm talking about is the extremism where folks will snap at you if you have a different opinion. [Edited 5/17/17 18:19pm]

We all have an opinion and they all should be respected no need for attack.

It's an interesting phenomena. I believe people are attached to a particular time in their life and the protege(s) match that time period. They are defending their memories, their sense of importance about that time for them, or the way in which they want to view the world when they "stan" for one. It's a peculiar thing humans do - even in light of facts, they will hold on to their "beliefs" because you are, in essence, attacking their sense of self. So, even though your opinion or the facts differ, they take it personally and respond to that, rather than the essence of what you are saying. God is my Sugar Daddy.
