Wendy And Lisa : Girl Bros Album

Hello

.

Does anyone know if there is any evidence showing Wendy And Lisa released Girl Bros under the band name Girl Bros?

.

This is how Discogs show this:

https://www.discogs.com/G...ase/415652

.

But they don't show any evidence of this being released under the band name Girl Bros.

.

Cheers!

It was indeed initially released in 1998 under the band name Girl Bros. That's exactly the heading it was under (in the G's) in the record store I bought it from in 1998. While discogs.com lists the album under Wendy & Lisa's releases, only the 2009 re-issue was actually released under the Wendy & Lisa name. If you go to this artist page...

https://www.discogs.com/artist/1313959-Girl-Bros

...you'll see the original 1998 release only. Discogs just added the original release(s) under W&L's Girl Bros album page, assumingly to combine all releases. If it was set up correctly, only the 2009 re-issue would be listed under W&L.

Thank you.

.

But I wonder if this was just because they had the name of the album on the artwork and not the artist. There is a sticker on mine that says "new studio album by Wendy and Lisa" which is confusing because if they weren't a band called Girl Bros then why have the sticker?

.

I suppose it's a bit like Prince's Black album. Technically it does not credit Prince but we don't ever say it's by a band called Black.

.

I would still like to find more evidence to prove this either way as personally I find it extremely hard to believe Wendy and Lisa were promoting themselves as a band called Girl Bros.

.

Thanks loads!

All the press I saw at the time of the original release indicated that they (W&L) purposefully released it under the Girl Bros. name. It had been 7-8 years since anyone had heard anything from them (partially because of Trevor Horn keeping them under ZTT contract but holding all music they had recorded during that time from release -- he still has them to this day, I believe). They sticker you have (if it's from 1998) may have been the record company's doing to make sure consumers knew who it was. But it was clearly intended to be released as Girl Bros.

Thanks again as that is very useful insight.

.

Do you remember anything about the Direct Sales Version?

.

Is this the initial version sold on their website? As this is very clearly credited to Wendy And Lisa on the red cover - this is also the cover they then used for the digital deluxe version.

.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!

Not sure about the "Direct Sales" version. The only one I knew of at the time of the initial release was the brownish cover with their backs turned to the camera. I think the redish cover with the dolls/toys was the re-release.

Hi there.

.

The direct sales version certainly has the dolls red artwork.

.

The 'shop' version, is as you say, the version with the photograph - this had the sticker I referenced earlier.

.

And then the digital only deluxe version from their website used the dolls red artwork once more.

.

I still believe it is very doubtful they ever intended for the audience to assume the band name was Girl Bros.

.

I believe they intended for the album to be called Girl Bros but just wanted it out there without any preconceived notions - very similar to how and why Prince wanted to release the black album.

.

The first release was as W&L, the dolls cover, from their website at the time.

Soon after, World Domination rereleased it, that's that version I used to have on CD, purchased back then, and it only said "Girl Bros." everywhere, save a little mention to W&L as producers or something on the back cover (written very small).

Was the intention to cerdit them as a band called Girl Bros.? IDK, I have to say I didn't pay much attention to that back then and directly filed the CD as a WéL release, it's only years later, online, that I learned that it was considered a "Girl Bros." release.

However since the original release was clearly credited to W&L, it's a W&L record.

.

For the record, TWO different configurations of the 1994 ZTT album have leaked and are circulating online. You just need to know where to look.

iirc, originally, it was more or less a rebranding exercise. I guess the Wendy & Lisa brand was too tight to Prince and they had left that mostly behind, starting with Eroica.
