NPG feat. Bilal July 13 in Portugal This is completely written in Portuguese language : http://www.glam-magazine.pt/the-new-power-generation-feat-bilal-1671087
Here is the english translation:
One of the most remarkable moments in the history of live music in Portugal was Prince's performance in Super Bock Super Rock. A year after his disappearance, it is more important than ever to remember the genius of pop music, and it is precisely this proposal that the mythical band that accompanied it brings us. The New Power Generation will perform on July 13, at the Super Bock Stage, accompanied by the American Bilal.
Prince's success is explained by the way he always challenged himself, incessantly seeking new sonorities. The chemistry he had with his musicians was a key part of this innovation process. Hence the importance of having at your side a band of excellence like The New Power Generation. Presented formally in 1990, they marked a new phase in the career of the small American genius of Minneapolis. They debuted on the Diamonds and Pearls album, released in 1991. Since "Purple Rain" Prince did not have a record with so many hits jumping to the top of Billboard and the critique surrendered to the synergy between Prince and His new band, and "The New Power Generation" a year later released "Love Symbol Album", another bestseller.
For the experience to be complete, the band comes to Super Bock Super Rock accompanied by one of the most interesting soul voices of the last years: the American Bilal. He first appeared in 2001 as he released the acclaimed debut album "1st Born Second." In his albums mixes like no one else jazz and electronic music, also blinking the eye to hip hop and contemporary music, always trying to be original (like Prince). Bilal is also known for his numerous successful collaborations with some of the biggest names in world music: Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, The Roots or Kendrick Lamar.
The New Power Generation feat. Bilal is a unique opportunity to hear the great successes of Prince interpreted by those who guarantee the excellence of interpretation that the genius demands. Not to be missed, July 13 on the Super Bock Stage!

I don't like this idea at all. Bilal did great in the tribute, but that's as far as it should go. I don't think they should be touring with another singer like this. I surely won't be going to see this. JMO.

What is the alternative? Do you think they (and the Revolution) shouldn't tour at all or, alternatively, just perform instrumental shows?

Alternative? To what? I think they should continue to do whatever they were doing before Prince died. I think they should write new stuff and apply their knowledge and expertise without having to rely on Prince's body of work. I think they should refrain from becoming a kind of tribute act, with a singer replacing Prince just because he can do the screams and sing falsetto. I think it's great to watch the Revolution do all those songs, specially because they do not have a vocalist to replace the irreplaceable, but there is a time frame for that and soon it will be extint. But that's just my opinion.

I appreciate your perspective. I'm just the opposite: As long as they are respectful of his legacy, and not hawking t-shirts with his image and/or logo and writing tell-all books, I think it's fine. I think Prince would like seeing his music kept alive...and I think he'd also like seeing his band members work to feed their families. In the final analysis, it will be Prince's loving fams who will determine how long this continues. If no one buys tickets, the tours will be very short-lived. [Edited 5/3/17 11:21am]

Agree. And enough with the purple wave riding. Books, hair products, tattoos, tributes, t-shirts, holograms, interviews with women who bonked Prince for two seconds, reality shows, the lot. It's getting tiring, imo. And it's starting to show it's ugly face. Greed.

The Revolution has guest singers, as well. Of course, they do. Either they are going to do mostly instrumental shows...or they are going to have guest vocalists. Period. Stokely of Mint Condition, who sometimes opened for Prince, is currently performing with the Revolution. I don't know how long that arrangement will last, but he's not the only person to sing with them. BrownMark even invited Eric Benet, of all people, to join them onstage if he's around during their NYC show. [Edited 5/3/17 14:01pm]

Did not know about Stokely. I thought Wendy was doing some of the singing also. And Eric Benet being invited to sing with them is something that I had chosen to erase from my memory.
Of course Prince music should be played, I totally agree with your analogy. But one thing is to play his music, like the revolution are doing now, and another thing is to have another sing his songs with his previous bands. Mozart, Beethoven and Gershwin were no singers, they were composers. I dunno, maybe I'm just being funny about it. I find that everyone seems to be riding the Purple Wave and that puts me right off and perhaps even conditions my opinion on this matter, I guess...
Concerning the lack of Prince material on the internet: I think that was one of his biggest mistakes and contributed greatly to the lack of knowledge recent generations have of him.

Check out the New Power Generation performing last week with Andre Cymone on lead vocals at the Celebration 2017 held at Paisley Park: https://m.youtube.com/wat...F72XOj293g

I agree. Even Morris Day said in a recent interview that seeing all the newly available video of Prince made him realize just how great P really was. Now, that's saying a lot.

I don't begrudge The Revolution and The New Power Generation for hiring guest vocalists to sing lead on songs that require falsetto but I can't see Stokley Williams and Bilal and any other vocalist that sing with these bands on tour other than cheap imitations to me. They're just begging to be compared to Prince when they release projects with their own bands. I don't want to see The Revolution and NPG, I have more than enough bootlegs of Prince leading HIS OWN BANDS and not jocking anyone. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

I have no shame in saying I'll take seeing Tony M in person any way I can get it! Now if only they'd move that show to Nashville!

I do not were you looked because as fast as he had stuff taken down stuff went back up. In addition there are loads of Facebook pages. The truth is if you wanted to find Prince's music you just had to look and there has never been any proof that giving away free video and music would do anything for music sales. If anything it has made people not care about owning music thus the popularity of streaming. Prince was on the right track keeping a lot of it offline because he sold more albums then anyone else last year just because people had to buy most of the material.
He was 20 years ahead when he had NPG music club. Remember how he got attacked for charging a few and now what people pay a fee to stream music.

Jesus, they sound incredible. That's not Kirk on drums, is it? It certainly doesn't sound like his playing...
