I understand that the mod might need to remove, but these are some great ones. You listed everything from the profound to a rocking sassy comeback.

Come to think of it, the sassy comeback has some profound in it, too.

I liked her sassiness but I don't care how much money I was making, if I'd have tried that with MY parents, I'd have been "booked" alright. Reimagine this brick with a book. falloff

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Her whole reflection on that MTV interview is really really moving.

Not like I love my guitar....

I agree with you generally as a parent but in this case being ‘booked’ isn’t just a date with friends. She would be letting people down professionally which would certainly hurt her reputation. No one wants to book an act with a reputation of canceling last minute.

That stood out to me too -- from a young age, she was a pretty worldly person, and seemed quite comfortable hopping on a plane (or in an RV) and heading to a new country. And I didn't realize the intensity of her early dancing career.

-

On a separate note, her description of her parents did make me a little uneasy. They both seemed dazzled by the idea of Mayte spending time with Prince, in a way that went beyond just trying to capitalize on professional dance opportunities. As a 16-year-old, Mayte mentions spending all night (platonically) alone with Prince, and her mother seemed more than happy for that to happen. Her mom seemed like a big Prince fan (she was super-excited that Prince tour was called the Nude Tour), and there did appear to a be a living vicariously vibe going on. (Generally, her parents gave her a lot of freedom, it sounds like, whether to see R-rated movies like Flashdance when she was 10 years old, or flying internationally with just her sister.)

-

And someone mentioned above that her parents were comparable to parents of a competitive athlete or similar. I agree to a certain extent, but Mayte's specialty -- belly dancing -- attracts a certain sexual attention that a typical sport wouldn't. So there was something a bit uncomfortable for me reading about how her mom egged her career on.

Maybe it's because I'm a guy. But nothing about either parent's involvement in the author's pursuits, struck me as sketchy. In my opinion, they did everything right. I would bet a year's salary that there are a trillion women all over the world who wish to death that their parents hadda done exactly what the author's parents did, if the end result was them being the one marrying Prince instead of the author.

Eddie Murphy had this one skit where he talked about the correlation between a lack of attention from their father when a girl is growing up and the likelihood of that girl becoming a stripper.

To me personally, the fact that the author didn't end up as a stripper is a testament to good parenting.

Of course, that's not to say I wouldn't be the first in line at whatever gentlemen's club lucky enough to feature her if she ever felt starved for more male attention ;د)

Chapter 3… I have to start with the funniest line in the chapter as far as I'm concerned, it made me laugh out loud.

… Randee St Nicholas told her later he called her at 2 in the morning to come watch videos of Mayte’s dancing…. while sitting on his bed? Mayte slips that comment in the book; ’sitting on his bed’ is that where all women would go in his house to ‘watch a video’? I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad negative way, but it’s just another example of the unusual being the norm in Princeworld.

I just started reading and I am on Chapter 2 currently going. So far I am shock at one finding out how she and her sister were molested by a family friend. I know she felt guilty in the beginning for thinking she cause her sister to be molested. She eventually let it go but I think if it was me, it would always be in the back of my mind that I might have been the one to cause it. Interesting read so far.

Chapter 3

“I’ve seen the future, and it will be…”

She is mesmerized by his performance! She remembers every last detail.

.

I’m beginning think the parents wanted her to star in some of his music videos to become a dancing star (in movies and music videos dancing) and never dreamed of how the turn of events would play out, change, and shape their lives. IDK, what do you all think?

Just picked up the book again, trying to be patient and wait for others to catch up...I was wondering..Mayte always did her "wonder woman" turn in order to magically transform into her onstage persona. Being that Prince genuinely seemed to be so reserved off stage, I'm curious if he had a certain ritual he would do prior to transforming into his onstage presence hmmm

That's an interesting question. I'd like to think so but based on anything I've read or listened to (not claiming to know him...just giving an opinion), I kind of always got the impression he was "PRINCE" all the time. I thought this book would express something to that point but it didn't sound like he really ever did ANYTHING with out the "PRINCE" bravado... Even during his most reserved times. My impression is he really created his own world for himself and stayed in that bubble.

I agree with this... I def think that her parents were 100% focused on Prince helping her career. Mayte's dancing wasn't a hobby. She was making serious money. I think her follks thought P could take her to the next level. I don't believe that they initially thought anything romantic would happen. I wonder now if her parents would make a different choice if they had to do it all over again. (knowing what they know now) Mayte basically gave up her dancing career (in Europe) when she was clearly going somewhere. I'm also curious why she didn't go back to Europe and try to restart her belly dancing career. Maybe being 26 was too old??

I wondered why she didn't try to revive her daning career and go to Cairo.

But maybe 26 is considered "old" in that career.

Here are my take-aways on chapter 2

.

She wasn’t a fan of P like her sister, but the psychological warfare in the (movie) family drew her to the PR movie (it resembled her own family situation), yet she listened to purple rain all the time. She says her sister was the real Prince fan, I wonder if she realized how much she was too? Did that draw her to him later in life?

.

Her mother was a strict catholic but lived with a guy with her young children? (Sorry, I hope I don’t get kicked off the thread for expressing my continuing displeasure with Mayte’s mother.) Yet to say something positive about her mom, dance school 90 mins away, that’s a 3 hour round trip. Hard to believe they (her mom and her) made this trip three times a week.

.

(oh here I go again…) She let her 16 area old daughter stay with a man in a hotel for the night. No matter that they just talked, it’s the appearance… idk, just wrong. I wonder if her mother wanted something to happen? It would be her ticket out of Germany.

.

sheepish, one more mom statement. She knew her 16 year daughter was getting ‘tips’ tucked into her costume by strange men.

.

She was a typical teenager in many respects, stayed in her room a lot, listened to music, challenged our parents/mother to shave our legs (wear makeup etc), and many girls feel alone in adolescence.

.

Her mother takes the kids and reunites with her father in Germany… she knew her mother made a mistake and ‘learned that mistakes aren’t necessarily forever’ and 'Second chances happen’ . She lived the last 25 years with that belief in mind with regards to Prince.

.

The whole description of trips to Egypt baffle me. Weren’t there tailors / seamstresses in Germany? If bellydancing was so big at the time, you would think someone closer to her home would open a costume shop. I live in NY, anything I would need to find, I can find in NYC, I wouldn’t even have to go to another state. Maybe IDK… maybe I just have a small town mentality (not saying that in a negative way). I got the feeling it was her mothers way (excuse) to get out of the house and take a trip/vacation. The whole topic is confusing to me.

.

Seems pretty fearless to get up on stage and dance when the guy… Amor Diab.. called her on stage.

.

She still looks back on P’s MTV interview, and it 'makes her ache to see him so young'. She describes his look, his face, his being with such love. And she imagines her son. ...tears...

~DD55

I got choked up there as well... I was confused by her parents being comfortable leaving her alone with him so soon after they met on top of the fact she was so young ESPECIALLY given the fact she and her sister were both sexually taken advantage of by someone the parents knew. Just me.

Yes, about mama and the tape...

Kirk took the demo dancing tape from Matey’s mom and gave it to P. I wonder, if Kirk ever wonders or tries to imaging what the trajectory of Prince’s life would have been like had he not accepted that tape. Kirk was the best man at their wedding. Was Kirk P’s bff back then? Was Kirk credited (for lack of a better word) for getting them together, as he did accept the tape? Someday Kirk will talk.

I know that isn't 100% book related as I'm wondering and speculating, but Kirk did take the tape. He could have said no.

I believe Kirk's brother was the Minister who married Prince and Mayte also.

Kirk probably didn't know that it would blossom into marriage.
