Regarding the tumultuous nature of Mayte's parents's marriage, I wonder if some of the instability comes from the marriage basically being a "shotgun" marriage done as a result of a pregnancy. Getting married because of a pregnancy was definitely more common in the 1960s and 1970s than it is now.

She also described her mother as a bold free spirit. & she mentioned that she dated ROTC men "hoping for a way out" I think that they would've gotten married (or atleast try to stick it out) regardless because she wanted to get out of PR. Sometimes people marry for convenience & love.

The kicker being that the grandmother is half black.

That mindset doesn't surprise me, some Puerto Rican's even now think this way. I simply shook my head, her grandmother was doing the damn most but let's be real some black folks right here in America are no different, we have that mindset too sometimes.

That mentality is all over the globe from one culture to the next, unfortunately.

I was struck by the fact that they were both children of strained, failed marriages. You really learn how to be a spouse from your parents.

I've been divorced twice. My first husband was like his father, helped around the house, was generous with material things, but was not affectionate.

If I'd taken what I learned to heart; I wouldn't have married the second.

It's also been said you may marry someone like the parent you want to fix a relationship with.

Mayte's relationship with her parents seems to have been okay.
I love you baby, just not like I love this guitar.~Prince~

I agree....we learn what we live (until we wise up and decide to discard that which doesn't benefit our life in a positive way). Her parents had extramarital affairs. So, it would make sense for Mayte to not question Prince dating several women at one time. It was her normal.

I also feel that the parents divorcing and remarrying multiple times did shape her belief that she and Prince would resume their marriage/romance again in this lifetime.

It totally makes sense now why she never really moved on. She really did believe that she and Prince would eventually reconcile. I do believe she loved him until the day he died.

Here were my take-aways on chapter one.

Mayte’s mother … mommy dearest

.

Her mother was hoping for a boy, but after she gave birth and it was a girl, "she end do mad she refused to see me” that doesn’t sound like a loving women who …. idk… that’s cold.

.

I wonder why (what medical condition) caused to be born with 'severely inverted legs’ poor kid. Her mother sounds fierce … not in a totally good way. When did the mother hold the child, cuddle, play, make her laugh? Did She?

.

She was really a ballerina, i wonder why P didn’t use her skills as he did with Misty? He did have ballet dancers on his radar… Who was the lady who danced ballet in Diamonds and Pearls?

.

After her very first attempt at dancing with her mom she got stage fright and didn’t dance… her mom didn’t talk to her or feed her for a week. wtf. Didn’t feed her? Her dad took care of her but seriously?

.

Her parents were cheating on each other, thats interesting that the kids knew it at such a young age.

.

Her father was an 'unapologetic flirt and cheater', funny how she would go on to marry an unapologetic flirt and cheater. History repeats itself. I wonder if she ever made the connection.

.

Hopefully I didn't read antyhing wrong. smile

mho, this women was starved of real affections as a kid. (added sentence)

Ok, I'm done.

I have to let it all settle in my mind.

I feel so antsy though. Like I should go back in a time machine to warn them all of what will happen if they do this or that.

That was very intense for me.

I couldn't wait any longer, so I'm listening to the audible version right now and generally, I love listening to audible versions when read by the authors because I love hearing their words, in their own voice as opposed to my mind's interpretation. I am less than 10 minutes in and I just must say that this is about to be a very long night because I can tell already that I am only going to be able to do this one time and one time ONLY. My thoughts will be posted here as they occur.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Ok here we go...Chapter 1, Pages 11-29

Talking Points

1. Both sets of Parents

Prince's parents:

Hardly discussed in this chapter. Mayte says he hardly talked about his early childhood. Perhaps because it was too painful or perhaps because he had already worked a lot of those issues out to a point where he didn't need to talk about it too much and had really moved on with the life he had created for himself. This is the first time I'd heard that he'd been locked in a closet--not cool.

Mayte's parents:

Weird situation but such is life. It is strange about Janell not knowing she was pregnant until she was 6 months along. I know it can happen--there are stories of women not knowing until they actually give birth--but probably not very common. My instinct tells me she probably knew before then but waited for whatever reason. Maybe fear or perhaps this woman who Mayte sort of portrays as a planner waited so long so that there were less options available.

Probably scared. Janelle's mother seemed really strict. Her fathers mother seemed more relaxed.

That was my impression as well.

-I would say the "family friend" story surprised me but it didn't. It's such a shame that a young girl's innocents can be taken in the blink of an eye. So many young girls share the same story & it affects the rest of their lives

-The description of her grandmothers mentality didn't surprise AT ALL lol I'm glad she mentioned it though. I've heard this 1000x over about MANY (NOT ALL) Puerto Rican grandparents not wanting ANYONE in their family to associate with darker skinned black people. I'd bet they'd have a heartattack if they found out what's in their dna mixture. lol

The kicker being that the grandmother is half black.

Exactly! I can't wait until everyone gets to the part where we can discuss when she mentions a event and correlation she makes early on that becomes a mirror incident in her future.

THAT was deep. eek

I would agree with that. I would also add that military life isn't for everyone. Constantly uprooting every few years can be difficult on even the most stable relationship.

Not sure how to address...re her dance skills. It's not mentioned in the book but I am aware of the type of dancing she did for Prince at the beginning of their professional time together. I'll put it in white just in case.

.

She has ballet solos during the diamonds and pearls tour and dances in other styles as well. I've seen several shows from that run.

Chapter I Parents & Family -

I focused on Mayte being an Army Brat with a military family. I don't know how many other org members come from those roots, but it hit home to this Brat.

Some, probably way too much, generalizations about military families:

1 - the family itself is as tight as tight can be. Functional or not. Your parents & sibs are the only consistents.

2 - you make friends fast, and prepare to leave them behind almost as fast FAMILY IS YOUR LIFE

3 - your behavior can impact your parents social and career status - not kidding.

you learn early to sit nice and smile.

4- Nellie being an officer wife is no joke. Its an important thing!

5 - Most military kids can spot another one a mile away. They grow up early

Thanks Mayte for bringing 'standby' travel memories back to me

Yes! *Sigh* I don't know... I think that age gap was a serious thing (meaning that he had a strong hold on Mayte) but we'll get to that later. She did mention in chapter one, however that she still believed that her and Prince had known eachother in a past lifetime. Do you guys think he really believed that himself?!

I'm pretty much satisfied with the way she wrote what she wrote, but I hate this helpless feeling I have now because I know it.

I can't say I regret it all happened...I don't think she regrets it, not all of it. Sure there are regrets in the various decisions that were made by everyone who lived it, but not all of it.

If one believes in destiny or fate, it had to happen...all of it...Fortunately or unfortunately.

I can't listen to the book anymore right now so I guess I'll give my thoughts on Chapter 1.

I agree. Mayte's family disfunction matches P's and it's easy to see where she got the personality to sorta not wanna rock the boat.

That family freind assh*le will get what he deserves. Karma's a b*tch.

I had no idea about Mayte's level of professional dancing. I just thought she was a pretty girl who seemed to make P happy.

Surprised by how many matches there are. It's an eye opener to learn that she was one of those who grew up seeing her parents grapple with affairs. I figured she expected plenty of promiscuity in the world of rock and roll, but it's something to realize how much she already knew of such troubles.
