I want to mention a misnomer regarding Mayte's descriptor of Prince's reaction upon seeing his son for the first time. I feel this has been misrepresented and feel clarification is warranted. Mayte relays that Prince's reaction was "joy" and then "TERROR". NOT HORROR! While these words could be used interchangeably, Mayte was using it in the context of "terrified", "extremely frightened", "very scared". Horror suggests "disgust" and after reading of Prince's absolute devotion to his son's needs during his too short life, I don't think disgust would even be an applicable interpretation of his reaction. Whew....feel better now having gotten that off my chest. [Edited 4/14/17 10:00am]

My thoughts exactly.

MissMarySharon

I was quite disturbed by the book in that it is documenting a tragedy and I found the descriptions of what they went through deeply moving. I decided I wouldn't let myself dwell on it too much, since it brings up questions to which we will probably never know the answers. What I can see is how much they loved on another and that's what I try to think about. Kudos to Mayte because she does admit that with hindsight she should have spent more time with Prince following Amiir's death, and thus perhaps offers an explanation as to why he turned away from her. Myself I don't think it was anyone's fault. Terrible things happen to people and in the aftermath human beings just do the best they can, sometimes hurting most the ones they love. These are just my own thoughts and I mean no offence to anyone who might feel differently.

She lost her child… P sings Comeback… She feels like she was a zombie for months. She had hard enough time getting past her own pain, she didn’t understand what was going on with P and how he was dealing with his own pain as she was in such a haze of pain herself.
.
She now realizes why he chose younger women, it was about he power balance. He did not want to be argued with. She shares a letter he wrote to her… he says he usually only has one disagreement with someone, after that they are gone.
.
She hints at all she doesn’t say about the marriage at the end. She says if fighting was an exercise, the last year of the marriage could be called the spin class from hell. Wow.
The Betcha by Golly Wow video was created after she lost the her first baby.
.
She starts to feel as if she’s healed and starts a ballet project. P is totally supportive.

I realize that the JW religion is a trigger for lotsa folks, not just P fans, but considering that Mayte lived this and did not assert this in her book, in fact she doesn't vilify LG at all. She merely states that the JW religion wasn't for her and didn't resonate with her. And I got the feeling she found the worship sessions boring and tedious due to that.

Lotsa things were in P's head regarding religion and G*d way before he met LG. He had been exposed to "fire and brimstone" in the Baptist faith and fundamentalism in the Seventh Day Adventists' faith.

JW doctrine gets blamed for alot of P's choices after LG.

Chapter Nine Timeline/Summary: Part 2

.

October/November 1996 – After spending a few days in the hospital due to an infection, Mayte returns home. She continues to grieve the death of her son.

.

November 1996 – One day, prince awakes Mayte and tells her that Oprah and her crew are visiting that same day. prince asks Mayte to be present for the show. Mayte initially refuses to participate, but after prince pleads with her, she agrees to participate. She is given a heavy mask of make-up. Oprah had come to find out if their son was dead or had health problems.

Mayte reflects that this would have been a good opportunity for she and prince to share the truth of what happened to their son in a dignified manner. Mayte then recounts what occurred during the show and provides some commentary of what transpired. Mayte was only present for part of the Oprah show. After participating in the show, she left and returned to their home, where she again spent time with Amiir’s ashes. She then took a bottle of Vicodin pills, and attempted to commit suicide by swallowing a large number of the pills. Mia refused to leave Mayte alone until Mayte put away the pills. Mayte reflects that she traces her passion for animal rescue to this moment when Mia saved her life.

.

Mayte ends the chapter by stating that she cannot speak to her husband’s experience with grieving Amiir’s death. However, she describes what she observed using a metaphor of a skydiver who jumps from an airplane, loses his parachute, and suffers irreparable damage.

Because I don't think she has it in her heart to be mean to anybody.

You can actively confront people without being mean, I've seen too many people do it. Which is why I said actively confront, as opposed to argue or fight.

Plus, I've seen Mayte go full blown tantrum.

For me, this was a hard chapter to read. Obviously, I already knew how their relationship ended up (spoiler alert!!!) but it was difficult because it was clearly a very painful time in her life. I'm impressed by how classy Mayte kept it while still telling her story.

I wonder if Prince thought it would be healing to go back to the hospital where Amiir died and shoot Betcha By Golly Wow?

.

The time they had together in Egypt seemed really good for them both. He was very supportive of her and even had her office built next to his.

.

He was so happy she was pregnant again.

.

She had a D & C done because there was placenta and NO fetus in her womb. She did NOT have an abortion. Let's be clear on that rumor.

And in enters Mani........................

This is confusing me now...

Yesterday I heard this interview in which Mayte Clearly states

Quote "I knew Oprah was coming"

I think that we all say things that sound contradictory or inconsistent but actually it’s context, context, context. She said she knew Oprah was coming, she doesn’t say when … as in was it right after Prince made her get out of bed and get dressed? Did she know Oprah was coming generally, but not that specific day, Maybe she knew Oprah was coming but didn’t know she would be required to be on the show.
.
Some times we have to just take the little things at face value (since they don’t change your life). If we were talking about a crime that would be another matter, but generally in life not everything is black and white.
.
For example, you could ask me if I want some chocolate ice cream and i tell you no thank you since i don’t like chocolate.
The next week, I tell you of this wonderful chocolate cake from a new baker. You walk away thinking I was untruthful to you at one point. However, if you asked me to be specific I would tell you it’s chocolate Ice Cream I don’t like not all chocolate items. (sorry that’s the best I could come up with tonight)
.
I think her putting on a smile on that day, pretending to the world everything is ok and actually going on the show had to be in a haze of pain. Do we discuss our questions, of course we do. So your question is totally valid.

Peace.

Chapter Ten: Timeline/Summary

.

Just to refresh everyone’s memory, at the end of chapter nine, Mayte and prince appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show. After appearing, Mayte goes home and attempts suicide. Her dog Mia saves her life. She describes how prince dealt with the loss of their son using a metaphor of a skydiver who jumps from an airplane, loses his parachute, and suffers irreparable damage.

.

Chapter Ten

.

Mayte asserts that prince wrote many songs dedicated to or inspired by their son. She mentions the song “Comeback.”

.

Mayte describes the deep love that she and prince had for their son.

.

She recounts asking prince to talk about their son’s death during hynotic conversations, but he refused to do so. She describes that they coped with his death by clinging to their faith in eternal life and how they could bring him back.

.

Mayte states that while they did nothing to prevent a subsequent pregnancy, her body was still recovering from the absence of her son.

.

She compares she and prince’s experience losing Amiir with post-traumatic stress syndrome. She states that neither one of them knew how to deal with the experience of losing him. She says that she was a “zombie for months” and that she had a hard time seeing past her own pain in order to understand what prince was experiencing. She also describes him as being emotionally inaccessible to some degree after Amiir's death.

.

She shares a letter that he wrote her before they were married in which he talks about what he does when he disagrees with someone. In the letter, prince wrote that he did not mind having disagreements with Mayte because “eye know we’ll always be 2gether.” He also writes about the desire to have children with Mayte.

.

Mayte discusses how the last year of their marrieiage was full of arguing and disagreements.

.

Mayte asserts that prince’s way of handling anything painful was to work.

.

Early November 1996 – Mayte discusses the “Betcha By Golly Wow!” music video. While prince recorded the song during her pregnancy, she asserts that he filmed the music video a few weeks after Amiir’s death. Mayte recalls disagreeing with prince's idea for the video because he wanted to film the video in the hospital where Amiir was born so that he could re-experience the joy and love that he felt while Amiir was alive. Mayte states that she participated in the “Betcha By Golly Wow!” video for the same reason that she appeared on the Oprah show, because she did not know how else to help prince.

.

Late 1996 – Mayte recalls how her mother had uterine surgery. Due to the gynecological nature of the surgery, Mama spent part of her hospital stay in the maternity ward, and Mayte recalls that she could not handle being at the hospital. Therefore, prince paid for a nurse to help Mama recover at home.

.

November 1996 - prince is promoting his Emancipation album. In order to promote the album, he travels to Chicago in order to make a live appearance on Oprah’s show.

.

November and December 1996 – Over several weeks, prince does numerous performances in order to promote the Emancipation album. The album does reasonably well on the charts. He had a lot invested in the success of the album because he released it via an independent distribution deal with EMI. She states that touring was a form of escape for him.

.

Mid-December 1996 - prince cancels two performances, which was very unusual for him. Mayte reports an incident when she saw his vomit and wine on the floor. She knew he was struggling with grief over Amiir's death. She never shared with him her suicide attempt or how Mia saved her life. She reports that her Vicodin pills kept disappearing.

.

Late 1996 – She reports that prince alienated a lot of people at this point in their lives. She would go and visit her mother and sister, but she and prince rarely had visitors in Minnesota. While prince was often away from home, she was not working and spent a lot of time alone. She recalls how tabloid coverage of their son’s death and a person asking her about their baby while she was at the grocery store made the loss feel even worse.

.

Late 1996 – Mayte recalls that she gained over 80 pounds while pregnant and that she had to work off some of the weight from the pregnancy.

.

February 14, 1997 – On their first anniversary, prince released Kamasutra, the music he had composed with the NPG Orchestra for he and Mayte’s wedding. She recalls how listening to Kamasutra and prince’s new music was helping her to come out of her fog of grief.

.

Early to mid-1997 – She describes how she and prince agreed that they needed a place where they could retreat from the world, strengthen their marriage, and have another baby. They ended up taking a trip to Egypt. She recalls that prince had been doing soul-searching by reading books on a various religions. Mayte recalls that she also read books and had discussions with him on various religious faiths.

.

Early to mid-1997 – After the trip to Egypt, Mayte recalls that they were able to reinvigorate their marriage. She recalls that he had created an office for her at Paisley Park. She felt ready to have another baby.

.

April 1997 – EMI/Capitol Records shuts down, screwing prince’s distribution deal. However, prince moved on to his next projects, the Newpower Soul album, preparing for the Jam of the Year Tour, and the Crystal Ball album. She states that moving on was his defense mechanism of choice.

.

Mid-1997 – prince is spending time with Clive Davis, president of Arista Records, engaged in the early stages of the Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic album. Mayte starts working on a theatrical project and forms a dance company. She writes that prince was always supportive of her own artistic ambitions. However, she and prince had some disagreements about the logistics of making the project, but were able to resolve them.

.

August 1997 – Mayte finds out that she is pregnant again, and prince is excited.

.

Summer 1997 – Mayte’s dance company puts on one production of the show and then disbands due to her pregnancy.

.

Summer 1997 – prince plays a show in Memphis, Tennessee. Larry Graham is playing a show nearby. Larry and prince meet up for an after-show in Nashville. prince connect musically and spiritually. Larry and his wife Tina came to visit prince and Mayte in Minnesota. Larry shares his Jehovah’s Witness faith with prince and Mayte. While prince finds the JW faith appealing, Mayte does not find it appealing.

.

September 1997 – prince begins the Jam of the Year Tour and Larry Graham tours with him.

.

Fall 1997 – Mayte and prince are happy that their pregnancy appears to be progressing normally. She spends time with him while he works on the Newpower Soul album.

.

November 19, 1997 – Around the three-month mark of her pregnancy, Mayte starts bleeding. She goes to the doctor and an ultrasound reveals a placenta, but no fetus; in other words, a partial molar pregnancy. When she tells prince about the miscarriage, he is crushed. He goes back to the studio.

.

November 1997 – Following the ultrasound, Mayte visits Mama for a few days. Mayte continues to bleed. She returns to the doctor, and the doctor recommends a dilation and curettage procedure in order to remove the uterine lining. prince does not want Mayte to have the D & C. He wants nature to take its course, and for Mayte to have faith. prince references Larry’s faith. prince refuses to go with Mayte for the procedure, instead calling a limo to take her to the doctor’s office. Mayte undergoes the D & C procedure. The doctor recommends genetic testing. Mayte undergoes the genetic testing and her results indicate no abnormalities. prince refuses to undergo genetic testing.

.

Spring of 1998 - prince asks Mayte to direct the video for his song “The One,” which he wrote for her. She describes how he gave her a great deal of freedom when directing the video. She explains that this video is the most genuine work that they created together.

.

Spring 1998 - prince and Mayte agree to buy a mansion in Marabella, Spain.

.

Mid-1998 – prince, Mayte, Chaka Khan, and Larry Graham appears on Sinbad’s show Vibe. prince speaks about his battle for artistic freedom and his new album, Newpower Soul. He also discusses “The One” and Crystal Ball. Larry goes on a religious rant during the show, and prince does nothing to stop the rant, which astonishes Mayte because the show was supposed to be about prince.

.

Mid-1998 – prince and Larry Graham start studying the Jehovah’s Witness faith more in depth. Mayte often accompanies prince, but is not enthusiastic about the JW faith.

.

Mid-1998 – During a brief tour for prince and Mayte’s charitable organization, Love 4 One Another, someone tells Mayte that prince has been spending time in online chatrooms. Mayte also meets Manuela, who was working for Love 4 One Another. She witnesses prince shake hands with Manuela. Mayte confronts prince about the incident, and he insists that nothing is happening.

.

Mid-1998 - prince asks Mayte to attend a basketball game with him, but she is not feeling well and does not want to go, causing prince to become very upset. She talks about adopting a baby, but prince is resistant to the idea. Larry and Tina are now living in prince and Mayte’s guesthouse. Manuela is studying the JW faith with prince, Mayte, and the Grahams. Mayte starts to feel increasingly desperate. She travels frequently between Spain and Minnesota, not wanting to leave prince alone for too long with Manuela.

.

Mayte reflects on this period in her life, and admits that she had left prince alone too many times during their marriage. She wonders if she could have done more to reach out to him while he was grieving for Amiir.

.

Mid-1998 - prince comes to visit Mayte in Spain, bringing an entourage, including Manuela. Manuela also comes to all of his concerts. While Mayte is in Spain, she receives phone calls from people who claimed to have seen Mayte and prince out together in New York, even though Mayte was in Spain at the time.

.

Mid-1998 – Mayte and prince meet in LA one night. prince is horribly sick and he asks her to dispose of some pills that are in the hotel room. She does so. She asks him to come to Spain and he agrees, but she flies back to Spain by herself.

.

Around mid- to late 1998 – Mayte is spending time in Spain and prince visits her infrequently. She hopes that the Manuela phase will pass. She recalls that by this time, he had hardcore interest in the JW faith. She states that he had come to believe that God was displease with the life he lead in his younger years, and Amiir’s death was part of the price that prince had to pay for his behavior earlier in life. She is very concerned about the state of their marriage, but hopeful that they will be able to weather the difficulties.

.

October 1998 – prince holds a press conference in Marabella, Spain for the Newpower Soul Tour, and Mayte accompanies him.

.

At the end of the chapter, while at their home in Spain, Mayte recalls the lesson that she learned years earlier about prince’s main girl being in Minneapolis.

Listening to the song "Sweet Baby," (my favourite on the prince album), I'm wondering if anyone else connected the lyrics of this song with some of the drama she was going through with the other members of the band that she discusses on pp. 129-130. Did anyone else pick up on this?

.

Stand tall, (tall)
Sweet baby, (baby)
Don't u fall
U ain't the only one gettin' beat down
It happens 2 us all
The road u chose 2 walk in this life (the road u choose 2 walk in this life)
Is one that leads into the next
So sweet baby, stand tall (sweet baby, stand tall)
Stand tall (sweet baby)
Sweet baby, hold your tears back now
Better days gonna come your way soon, oh yeah sweet baby
Someway, somehow

For me, this was a hard chapter to read. Obviously, I already knew how their relationship ended up (spoiler alert!!!) but it was difficult because it was clearly a very painful time in her life. I'm impressed by how classy Mayte kept it while still telling her story.

I found chapter 10 to be really difficult also, probably more difficult than chapter 9. I think part of what made it so difficult for me to read chapter 10 is because there's nothing happy in it. As sad as chapter 9 was, it had 2 redeeming qualities: (1) I FINALLY got to learn more about what happened to their son and (2) Mayte provides the most loving, flattering, and magnificent descriptions that I have read anyone make about Prince when she describes how he behaved as Amiir's father. I definitely agree that she has kept it very classy in the book...keeping it classy seems to be her M. O. in general.

This whole concept of prince retreating into a fantasy world, which LBrent has articulated, is on clear display in chapters 9 and 10, specifically in how prince dealt with the Oprah show and the "Betcha By Golly Wow!" video.

This is confusing me now...

Yesterday I heard this interview in which Mayte Clearly states

Quote "I knew Oprah was coming"

I listened to the interview, which is fantastic. (I love the moment where her dog intrudes on the interview...very cute.)

.

I do not find her statement that "I knew Oprah was coming," to be confusing, for two reasons. First, it's possible that she may have known Oprah was coming, but did not know the specific date. Therefore, the date could have caught her by surprise. Second, she may not have known that prince was going to insist upon her appearing with him on the Oprah show.

.

Another thought I have is that I wonder when prince and Oprah made arrangements for the show. I wonder if the arrangements were made prior to Amiir's birth. Mayte's due date was in early November. She shares in the interview and in the book that he made the appearance on Oprah in order to promote the Emancipation album. So perhaps prince and Oprah had scheduled the appearance weeks or months in advance, prior to the birth and death of their son.

I agree about the fantasy being a coping mechanism.

Wow, I have never heard about the jewelry box. The man was an enigma, that's for sure...he was even an enigma to Mayte at times.

At the beginning of chapter 10, Mayte mentions that prince wrote many songs inspired by or dedicated to Amiir. I would be interested in knowing the names of these songs. She has confirmed one of them, "Comeback." There is also "Until U're in My Arms Again." While neither Mayte nor prince have confirmed that this song is about Amiir, all of the details in the song strongly suggest that it is. I wonder if prince released any other songs about Amiir, or if the rest of the songs to which Mayte refers remain in The Vault.

.

Does anyone know of any other songs that they suspect prince wrote about Amiir?

It was here on the forum that it was said about the jewelry box.

.

Right now my computer has a virus pissed and I'm on hubby's computer and it won't let me copy and paste, my work computer blocks me from copying and pasting also???........All of my pictures of my dog that I lost, not long ago is on my computer. So I'm really, really hoping it can be saved. beg

Which leads me to think about Mayte. If I'm heart broken over losing pictures of my dog that recently passed, she must be MORE then heart broken about the Urn. I can't even imagine.
