Thanks so much for the ibook tip, I have a day off today and the idea of waiting till tomorrow was making me crazy. I'm about three quarters way through, will not stop till it's finished. My god. It's devastating. Beautiful, heartbreaking, insightful...and really fricking honest without being overly salacious - and he was no saint, so it doesn't bother me that she doesn't sugarcoat some stuff, but I think he comes out of it well...I think you get a really strong sense of how so much that we love about him as an artist really was just him. I know its ghostwritten, but her voice also comes through very powerfully, and I think it's really clear why he loved her, and how much she loved him. Anyway, so glad we get to process it together. I think it will really help. When are we thinking of starting?

It's good to hear you, jayseajay. I never got to thank you for reminding me (on another thread) about the hallway speech. I'm noting that in particular because I should have gotten back to that thread, but didn't. Those day-to-day life demands sure do get in the way. : ) I really appreciate your insights on many topics here.

Speaking of life's demands, I'm glad to hear you have a day off, and I hope you are able to dig into that last quarter of the book.

hug

This is so frustrating. Why isn't it released on Kindle in the UK until the 6th! Grrrr

I'm going to point some Tumblr folks here if you don't mind. Def recommend reading this book with others to help process it and I imagine some people live on "purple islands" where they may not have fellow fams around to discuss it with.

Excellent review!!

I feel the same way! I went into this book with a ton of prejudice. As I am close to wrapping it up, I have a lot of respect for her.
It's a love story from HER perspective.
She keeps it classy from beginning to end

I will tonight when I get off work. This thread is already 7 pages and we are going to try to start fresh, so we can go chapter by chapter. That way it won't be so confusing.

I'm hoping 206Michelle will do a timeline for each chapter.

SweetKathleen

My copy wasn't supposed to be delivered until sometime between 4/10 and 4/14....but it was on my doorstep this morning!

I wasn't sure what to expect (I don't like the title very much)....but even the opening quote before the prologue had me kind of stunned/reflecting. First couple of pages of the prologue had me crying. Had to put it down for a while. But I guess I need to get on with it and through the first chapter for when the discussion starts.

Looking foward to reading other people's thoughts too.

I miss you my friend --jj, me, and many others

I don't know Mayte, but I think her book is a heartfelt and honest account. I was moved while reading it. It didn't change my perception of Prince in any way. I believe she loved him deeply, and she shows enormous compassion here, which I think is admirable. I was also pleasantly surprised that it is pretty well written and the narrative moves well. Although given the subject matter it would've been a page-turner for me regardless, I think her ghost writer did a fantastic job of keeping the melodrama to a minimum and moving the plot along smoothly, while still maintaining Mayte's 'voice' throughout.
I'll wait for the chapter threads to start before making more specific comments (sorry, PennyPurple, if I've broken any of your rules...)

Ooh, boy. I think you just made my mind up for me... I'm really on the fence about reading this right now, not because of any negativity in the book; I don't think there's much in it I wasn't already aware of. But, I don't think I'm ready yet to delve into the spaces of someone's personal grief when I haven't yet dealt with my own. I think I will read this eventually. But, just not now. Not a good time. For me.

I have another 2 1/2 hours to listen to so you know where I am in the story.

It's hard.

We'll definitely need this group, but I also think it'll bring some healing and closure.

We'll see...
