Rehabilitated' Paisley Park takes center stage for Prince anniversary Interesting interview with Joel Weinshanker who runs PP now. He mentions that they had to spend several million dollars to make structural improvements to the building and that money couldn't come from the Estate. http://m.startribune.com/...419571163/ Fresh off opening a $137 million expansion at Graceland that includes a new 450-room hotel complex, Weinshanker revealed plans for some bigger and better things at Prince’s museum. They range from another concert series in the fall to nonprofit music education programs to a more modest and very tentative idea for a hotel, to be built in the empty, oval building on the property. The first priority, though, was simply saving and preserving Paisley Park and its contents. Several million dollars were spent last year to rehabilitate the 30-year-old building, including work on the roof and the heating and cooling system. More structural work was needed. Money for all this could not come from the estate, which has the first priority of paying off an estimated $100 million tax bill heightened by Prince’s lack of a will. Concurrent to the repairs, Graceland Holdings’ expert archivists went to work handling the museum’s 7,000 or so royal items, including one-of-a-kind instruments and fashion wear. “Archival work will forever be a role here,” Weinshanker said. He offered these details partly in response to criticism that Paisley Park’s $38-$100 tours and parties and especially the Celebration tickets — about 10 times what Prince typically charged for his own concerts there — are too pricey, especially for Twin Cities fans who would like to go there often. “The majority of the money being made is going right back into Paisley Park,” said Weinshanker, who also emphasized that his company’s primary goal is to “elevate and shine a spotlight on the genius of Prince to new generations.” “I love all the locals that have been here many times. But if you asked me would I rather have 10 people who have never been to Paisley Park and are learning about Prince vs. one local die-hard, I have to tell you it’s our responsibility to accommodate those 10 people.” Paisley Park is in your heart

You have to wonder why Prince, who was so immaculate in his persona and presentations, allowed PP to deteriorate...perhaps he didn't have the strength to keep up with the day-to-day? Interested in what others think.

Regulations probably differ for a studio versus a museum. And once you start making a certain number of changes to an older building, it is no longer grandfathered out of certain newer laws (like the ADA). And one town where I lived, if the owner lived in the building, regulations were much more lax than if the owner did not live in it - so I'd bet it mostly had to do with that sort of thing.
Then again, how many of us have the A/C for our private homes checked annually and updated? I'd imagine Prince was just normal in that respect.

It's probably like if you're going to sell your home and s realtor or inspector comes in and tells you all the things you need to do to get your house ready to sell. Paisley Park is in your heart

A busted heating/air conditioning unit is not detoriation. For all we know he was going to get it fixed. He had already had some painting done and a new stage built as he posted the pics. The interior designer who worked on the exhibit rooms showed are plans for the other rooms. I believe he was renovating for the museum to open. This is the Tribune blowing things up as usual.

Does a busted air conditioning unit cost several million dollars? It's not hard for me to believe the place needed some work and if Prince were still here and decided to go ahead with the museum plans he would've had that work done. Paisley Park is in your heart

Exactly, I doubt the heating unit was a mill. He would have had to comply with zoning laws to turn it into a museum so at some point the repairs and upgrades would have had to be done.
Just the media making drama. I said it once if you looked on his inventory sheet he did not have a stack of liabilities.

Too many complaining that the estate/Graceland is ripping people off just to line their own pockets when in reality there was a lot of work they needed to do to get PP museum ready and all that work costs money.
