It was her parents' idea to find him and make sure he had the tape in the first place. They kept pushing it and pushing it until the tape was in his hands. He responded with the actions you listed above and then it took off from there. However, it started with her and her parents. He didn't seek her first.

I agree her parents relentlessly pursued him and allowed their daughter to visit P in his hotel room alone. They are responsible for placing their daughter in P's orbit. BTW, Mayte is now said to be 47 so working backwards, it appears that she was born in 1969 and not 1971 as her birth year is often stated. Prince asked her if she was really 16 when he met her. This is because she probably looked older than 16. It is not unusual for people in showbiz to shave off a couple of years off their age. Both MJ and Prince has a couple of years shaved off their age when they were younger. I am not sure why her parents brought up the issue of him being her guardian. I certainly hope that they are not trying to position her to make a claim on P's Estate.

Her sister was born in 1969. Mayte was born in 1973. Her parents did NOT relentlessly pursue him.

If her parents came to him the were pursuing him. Stop your bull right now. Her parents wanted her to hook up with him. Even the British could see it.

Nope. Not bull. There was ONE tape and ONE exchange of that tape. Prince chose the option to view it and respond. They did not relentlessly stalk Prince's concert venues in a desperate attempt to get Mayte noticed. Truth. Please stop skewing facts....

I never said there was more than one tape. So who are you addressing? The parents came to the concert with the damm tape to show him. How many people come to concerts with video tape of their daugther to show the artist performing. Is this something you have notices at concerts you have attended?

The wanted her to meet him. Do you think Prince contacted the parents randomly to meet their daughter? Mayte has actually said in previous interviews that she was not interested in going to the concert. The parents sought Prince out and this is what she got blasted for on the Bristish news program.

He viewed the tape because they said she was a dancer. What was he suppose to do with the tape in order to see her dancing.

I do not know what you Mayte fans are tripping on or why you are living in the fantasy world that you are in. You cannot go back and change information that was already out years ago.

There are many stars that can confirm they receive unsolicited material all the time. In fact, someone tried to give Prince a CD at a concert a few years ago (and they posted about it on here) and they were upset when he wouldn't take it. Many, many people try to solicit in just that manner.

Yes, they wanted to push her to achieve a dancing career and took her to one Prince concert and insisted she make a tape to give to him. That is not pursuring. That is giving one tape in the hopes he will view it and it would give their daughter the break she wanted.

Prince was notorious for not viewing solicitations like that, however, he had already noticed Mayte and when the security guy was given the tape and took it to Prince, Prince viewed it immediately and even admitted that he didn't normally do things like that. So he was interested already.

I don't know what you Mayte haters are tripping on or why you are living in the fantasy world you are living in, but most people that are actually reading the released version of the book are not finding her to be as horrid as you all want to paint her.

BTW, I'm a Prince fan first and foremost, but I have not ever agreed with the vilification that goes on against those connected with him or with him. This site has been notorious for both.

Would you seriously allow your 16 year old daughter to go to the hotel room of a pop star, who was notorious for his sexuality, alone late at night and through the early hours of the morning to view videotapes of her dancing with him? The parents need to be held accountable for their own inappropriate conduct. Simply pointing this out does not make one a hater.

Mayte wrote a book -- she should expect that like any other book it will be read, dissected and discussed. She choose to make discuss some issues that can be disputed with factual information. People who point out the factual inaccuracies should not be branded as haters. It's the people who have taken it upon themselves to be defenders of the book and not allow any unfavorable comment who are the problem.

Allow people to review and question what appears to be inaccuracies. If you have factual information to the contrary, present it. That is how intellectual discourse is carried on. Not this blatant attempt to shut up anyone who is not enthused about the book, and label all of them as haters. That is childish behavior!

Honestly?

Depends on my 16 year old. There are 16 year olds and then there are 16 year olds.

When I was 16 years old, I could've been in that situation and been fine cuz I was mature minded and not a pushover. My 2 daughter as well.

No, as for parents, my Dad would've let me go but stayed to chaperone. My Momwould've never even allowed me to go at all.

I would've let my daughters go, but would've gone to the lobby to wait in case they needed me.

I think her Mom, considering how protective she seems, got a trust vibe from P and that's why she let Mayte stay unsupervised, but I could be wrong.

Thanks - LBrent. Bottomline is that her parents were stage parents who placed their daughter in a situation that led to her relationship with P. I am sure P is not the only person they pursued to further their daughter's career. Apparently, her videotape was sent to MJ as well but he did not respond to it. I don't see that P did anything wrong. He offered her an opportunity of a a lifetime and employment with him as dancer. The alternative would have been her dancing in hotels in Egypt or the Middle East, or Middle Eastern restaurants in Heidelberg, and seedy hotels in the Redlight District of Frankfurt. What is upsetting P's fans is the conclusion that some are drawing that he started an inappropriate friendship with a 16 year old girl. Fans who feel that P's reputation is being tarnished unfairly have a right to speak up without the supporters of the book labeling them as "haters". It needs to stop. The discussion of the book and some of the disturbing parts and inaccuracies should be pointed out and corrected. A lot of reputations are being dragged through the mud unfairly, and people who have facts to the contrary need to be allowed to make those facts known.

Fine..."dissect" and "discuss" to your heart's content. That is what the premise of the Book Club thread is. If you have read the book and would like to participate, the option is yours. However, you will notice that the dialogue, which may or may not differ in view and perception, is civil and respectful.

The discourse occurs when there are comments made that go beyond the pale. Such as shaming her for mourning the death of her and Prince's beloved son in her way (sobbing in bed while clutching Ahmir's urn), for obliging her Mother's enthusiasm to further her career by seeking out one who has the means to do so (preparing an audition tape for Prince), and it goes on. How does that add value to the conversation? Frankly, THAT is childish behavior.

And, "holding the parent's responsible for their inappropriate conduct" comment is an opinion, not a widely held belief. And the absolute audacity of that statement is mind boggling! WHO has the right to judge another's actions or decisions? They know their daughter better than anyone and Prince assured her Mother that she would be safe in his care at the hotel.

And, please, how can someone, who is outside looking in, claim to know Mayte's story (HER memories) more accurately than the author herself? That's simply ludicrous thinking.

Thanks - Lovejunky and NotACleverName, for years P has been blamed for messing Mayte up. It is appropriate for me to point out that her parents put her in close proximity to him. So why is he blamed for messing her up?

Nobody is disputing Mayte's memories; however, when she makes factual statements that are not true they need to be pointed out to her. A case in point is the video of the song "The Greatest Song That's Ever Been Sold" which she refers to as a "down and dirty" video that P made with a dancer from the Crazy Horse Cabaret place in Paris. The video is not "down and dirty". That is her opinion. The video was beautifully made.

The princial dancer in the video is Desray Junca, a woman from Cape Town, South Africa. P dated her from 1999 to 2001 before he married Mani. She said P asked her to move to Paisley Park and she turned him down because she is a Catholic and was unwilling to convert to JW. He took her to meet his Mother. P also dated Ananda Lewis briefly in 2001 before he married Mani.

So why is Mani alone being blamed for plotting with Larry Graham to end Mayte's marriage. These are some of the factual misrepresentations that need to be pointed out.

I don't find tasteful nudity vulgar, or vulgar nudity offensive.

That TGRTEBS video was tasteful in my opion, but my husband wasn't in it so...

That dancer said in the article you posted that she worked in a Cabaret in France. In another article she names it as the Crazy Horse.

Yes they did put her in close proximity -- to get her a chance at being a dancer for him. I don't really think they were trying to sell her to him as a lover, and for all my criticism of Prince's... /interesting/.... choices for romantic relationships, I don't think he'd ever have had sex with an underage woman even if they were dangling her for that purpose. An 18 year old? Ha, I wouldn't have trusted him farther than I could have thrown him, but really? He wasn't THAT much of a satyr, and he wasn't stupid! Give the man that much credit, would you? falloff As far as Prince 'messing her up' -- yeah, he kinda did screw her over a little bit. He wasn't /solely/ responsible for that by a long shot, considering what she wrote in the book, but his behavior certainly didn't help.

Nobody is disputing Mayte's memories; however, when she makes factual statements that are not true they need to be pointed out to her. This is your /opinion/, not a fact. And considering Prince's track record of slightly shady behavior regarding women he wanted to screw, if I were Mayte at that point, hell yes I'd be pissed and side-eyeing him, too. He's always done that kind of thing when he found a new toy to play with.

So why is Mani alone being blamed for plotting with Larry Graham to end Mayte's marriage. These are some of the factual misrepresentations that need to be pointed out.

Here's a thing where I agree with you, though. I see a lot of flame thrown at Mani for 'breaking up their marriage!' Granted, I think her behavior wasn't on the up and up either, cause really. Chasing married men is just wrong. However, uhm.... no, Mani didn't have any kind of power over Prince that he didn't give her because he wasn't thinking with the right brain. I blame him for that one. His ass was totally looking to stray, or he would have noped her, and whoever the hell else he was playing with. NO excuses. Stop playing, brah, if you want out of the marriage cause you're not happy, then get out and go play with whoever you want to play with, but don't act like you're too stupid to know when you should tell a woman to pump her brakes.

Thanks - LBrent! The point I am making is that we are not getting the full picture of what went on during the period leading up to and after the marriage ended. She indicates that she asked him to end the marriage without using the "D" word. P's publicist at the time stated that Mayte had annulled the marriage. We also have the interview at which P announced that they were annulling the marriage. I don't want to get into the debate over divorce or annulment. Maybe the stress of that period caused her to forget some things that happened. A lot of that information is already in the public domain. What a good book editor does is go through the book with a fine tooth comb, and research factual information to corroborate the information provided by the author. The editor's job is also to ask questions and play the devil's advocate to ensure that no stone is left unturned since people's reputations are on the line. It took me a few minutes to find the information regarding Desray Junca and Ananda Lewis. The comments by P's publicist regarding the annulment of the marriage by Mayte is also in the public domain. Why couldn't the editors find the same information? The fact is that they did a very poor job of the review of the book. When the reputation of a man who is no longer here to defend himself is on the line, you better believe that I will question descrepancies and inaccurate information. There are other facts that I will point out later. It does not help when people who have taken an entrenched position stand ready to attack anyone who questions the veracity of the author.

I know something is wrong if I’m taking the time trying to explain what a commercial advertisement is.

.

What I don’t understand what they don’t understand?

She is selling something and we’ve been discussing the intent of a misleading published ad!!!

There are laws… you can’t be ambiguous with the truth in publishing something about a public figure. That is libel.

.

A commercial advertisement is design specifically to influence the consumer into buying.

When I read an ad that says Cheetos, Mac & Cheese, Cheese-its or Cheese Nips the inference is the flavor of cheese, not broccoli.

And Yes, I’d argue their intention was to make me think of something “cheesy.”

.

There is something called the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Truth in advertising.

.

Libel is the publishing of a false statement damaging a person’s reputation.

.

To establish Libel one needs to prove the existence of Actual Malice, which is defined as the publishing of a defamatory statement with “knowledge that is was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.”

Prince’s character is being defamed, slurred, tainted, tarnished, vilify and I want to understand why it is being allowed to happen.

Did the estate attempt an injunction or did anyone try to sue to stop the book from being released?

.

I went to permanently delete my account last night to find I forgot my password.

I created another password. The site ask for a reason for deleting it, I wrote in “Mayte’s book” and hit click to execute a permanently deletion. The site acknowledge my request, sent me an email, and noted that it would be deleted in 24 hours, if I don’t log back in.

.

Mayte’s book changes things.

I’ll eventually come to terms with it, but if this knowledge has shook me up as much as it did,

what did it do to him?

Could he sit and face the coming questions, knowing what they would be asking and calling him?

Could he live with it? Would it end his career?

Salacious romantic inferences about him and a 16 years old.

What was the threat she made at the auction house?

How soon after did he accidentally overdose? Is it or is it not related?

.

I was deleting my account because I concluded her book to be true,

mainly based upon lack of legal push back.

Figuring that, because of her known age back then, either it is all true or she has something far worse on him to control them.

I still question the bases of allowing the annulment, which in the past has been mentioned often on this site. Search “Mayte annulment” and it pops right up.

Minnesota law allows no reason that would be applicable that far into the marriage, save for still being married to a third party or being closely related by blood or adoption.

.

.

I don’t know Mayte to hate her.

I believe she is smart. A silly little girl she is not and probably never was, or never allowed to be; not with all that training.

Training in a Martial Art known to leave men off-guard, weak and defenseless; with brain draining visuals

that has them thinking with the wrong head.

Without the dancing, normally how old is a girl when she realizes she can easily catch the attention and manipulate men?

Now, when do think she knew, and was it before or after her parents who were certain of it.

If Prince wasn't in habit or practice it would appear that he was targeted. But probably not likely.

More like, everyone involved was being opportunistic during a series of questionable and bad decisions that kind of spiraled out of control.

.

Interesting fact, Prince dressing “normal” or rather, dressing like Bryant Gumbel was Mayte’s idea?

Obviously they both found the idea ingenious and incredibly humorous, as did everyone there at the show that morning.

Knowing the thought of Prince acting or looking normal would be outrageously funny, ridiculous, a joke… is telling.

Clever girl…

TOB -- good to read your post. You are a very wise man. Glad you decided to stay. I know a few good people in the UK who have been damaged, and their lives ruined forever because of allegations of sexual impropriety where it was his word against her word. The fact is that in Europe a lot of Gypsy families with dubious intentions roam around and prey on innocent people. Any Gypsy family could have used their 16 year old daughter to prey on P, made a false accusation, blackmailed and ruined him. He was actually lucky that it was an American family from a US Army Base. P let down his guard and allowed himself to be drawn into a potentially dicey situation. Regarding how he would have taken all of this if he were alive, I don't think it would have bothered him. There is his truth, her truth and the real truth somewhere in between. We are hearing her truth and since he is not here to dispute or affirm any of it, I chose to take it with a pinch of salt. A Tumblr website page has been set up and they are compiling the misrepresentations and the refuting factual information. The P who passed away at age 57 is not the P who married Mayte at age 37. He evolved and became spiritual. He grew close to God and became a better man who was at peace with himself and God. The only being that can judge him is God. At the end of the day, it does not matter what any of us think. Another thing P said we could learn about him through the lyrics of his songs. I believe the lyrics of "Man 'O' War" pretty much sums up what went on. I will copy and paste the lyrics for all to read. Peace!

I do not understand why any parent would give guardianship of their child to anyone. If maytes career was so important to them, why would they not travel with her? Did her mom have a job? Even if she did would it not be more important to safeguard your under age daughter who is traveling the world and dancing very sexually in public? I have heard many many stories over the years of other children that had dreams of preforming who's entire family move to support the child's aspirations. so her family got a "good vibe" from prince and let her go...but that good vibe was either wrong or just went away as her mom ended up hating him...

SpookyNopetopus: thanks -- no problem. I think you stated your points very well and took time to address each issue I raised. The point that I wanted to make is that the book was not properly edited so some factual information has either been omitted or misrepresented. Proper editing and rudimentary research by the Publisher who have helped the Author to present a much more factually accurate book. Thanks again!

Well... security-wise, Prince was well protected. I'm pretty sure that security would protect her as well. I can't imagine that the crew wouldn't be looking out for 'the kid' just on principle, because she /was/ a kid, no matter how worldly wise she might have been. And hadn't Mayte traveled alone before?

I am having a lot of trouble here with this whole bit of the thread. Everyone insists that they don't want Prince seen as a pedophile, but you guys sure are working hard to slam that insinuation home. It actually hadn't occured to me that Prince would have a sexual relationship with an underaged girl. It still isn't a thing -- however, you guys are making such a big deal out of it, do you think maybe the very thing you're all hoping to protect his legacy against, you're sticking right into the heads of others?

I've said before I've foind the idea of Prince dating a woman so much yougner than himself a bit iffy (because there is a LARGE difference between a nearly forty year old and a twentysomething, even if she's a feisty mature one!), but good grief, even I won't believe he'd do something with an underage child. Very good point -- LOVESYMBOLNUMBER2! When Andy Allo, at age 22, went on tour with Prince for the first time, her parents had her older brother Chris chaperone her on the tour. She should have been chaperoned until she turned 18 years old instead of her parents handing her over to Prince, a young man running his own business, to take care of her. In the extract below, Rosie Gaines is said to have expressed concern for Mayte because she was often lonely on the tour with no one to talk to her. She was often homesick and cried a lot. The musicians and roadies did not have time for her. I guess that is why she eventually bonded with P when Carmen left and started her own tour.

p. 179: “Life on the road was also sometimes hard for young Mayte Garcia. Although Prince continued to treat her as a girlfriend-in-waiting, he took no steps to insulate Mayte from the rambunctious, male-dominated atmosphere that surrounded the tour. Gaines recalls on several occasions seeing Mayte in tears on the bus and in dressing rooms, apparently overwhelmed by feelings of homesickness. When Mayte was summoned to the inner sanctum and felt the glow of Prince’s attention, it felt magical. But at other times, left to her own devices, she was simply a confused teenager with no one to talk to.
As Rosie Gaines watched the Prince-Mayte courtship unfold, she marveled at how much this young woman resembled his previous girlfriends, both in looks and temperament. She was another young woman who could not have been easier to manipulate. This would likely be another relationship was would persist only until Mayte – like Kim Upsher, Susan Moonsie, Susannah Melvoin, and Anna Garcia before her – grew up enough to object. “She was too young to have her own thoughts yet, and Prince liked that,” Gaines remembered. “But I knew that would change.”.”

I agree. We are talking about the parents' responsibility. They seem to be getting a pass while P is slammed for his involvement with a 16 year old girl. They need to be held accountable for their decision to hand their daughter over to P -- an unmarried young man in his prime with several girlfriends at the time.

I’ll eventually come to terms with it, but if it this knowledge has shook me up as much as it did,

what did it do to him?

Could he sit and face the coming questions, knowing what they would be asking and calling him?

Could he live with it? Would it end his career?

Salacious romantic inferences about him and a 16 years old.

What was the threat she made at the auction house?

How soon after did he accidental overdose?

Peace!

Man'o'war Lyrics

from Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic

Why you screaming?
You know I'm not a man of war
Break the gold chain that I gave you
Throw it down on the floor

Instead of this 7 page letter
I wish I had piece of mind
My friends tell me, "You should go get her"
But loving you, loving you, loving you is a waste of time

Oh yes, it is, a waste of time, ooh

I need to get out of this city
I need to get you out of my head
I need to get away from the words that you said to me

Why you screaming?
(Ooh)
You know I'm not a man of war
How could you think that
I could put something inside of someone
That I put inside you, inside you?

Even if I tried to, tried to
(Tried to, tried to)
I couldn't 'cause I still smell like the last time that we
Loving you, loving you, loving you is a waste of time
(A waste of time)

Oh, yes it is
Loving you, a waste of time
(Ooh oh)

I need to feel wanted again
I need to feel love is alive, yeah
I need to hear you say
That you ain't looking for another reason to make me cry

Why you screaming?
(Ooh)
You know I'm not a man of war
I've been trying to make you happy, baby
Ever since we were sophomores

(But loving you, loving you, loving you)
Is a waste of time, oh yes, it is
Oh, is a waste of time, waste of time, waste of time

If there's no future then there is no past
And all we've got is right now
Let's make it last
Make it last, make it last
(Ooh)

Why you screaming?
You know I'm not a man of war
Break the gold chain
(Break the gold chain that I gave you)
Throw it down on the floor, oh baby

Instead of this 7 page letter
I wish I had piece of mind
(My friends tell me, "You should go get her")
Tell me, "You should go get her"

(But loving you)
Loving you, loving you, loving you
Is a waste of time
(A waste of time)
Oh, a waste of time, oh yeah

I need to get out of this city
I need to get you out of my head
I need to
I need to get away from the words that you said to me
I need to

I need to feel wanted again
Oh, I need to hear no sin
Hear me
(But loving you, loving you, loving you)

Why you screaming?
You know I'm not a man of war
Break the gold chain that I gave you
Throw it down on the floor, oh baby

Instead of this 7 page letter
I wish I had piece of mind
My friends tell me, "You should go get her"
But loving you, loving you, loving you is a waste of time

If her parents came to him the were pursuing him. Stop your bull right now. Her parents wanted her to hook up with him. Even the British could see it.
Nope. Not bull. There was ONE tape and ONE exchange of that tape. Prince chose the option to view it and respond. They did not relentlessly stalk Prince's concert venues in a desperate attempt to get Mayte noticed. Truth. Please stop skewing facts....

That's right. They didn't stalk Prince. LOL How Laura is presenting it, is totally wrong.

Evidently a lot of other people come to concerts with tapes for the star to see. They said Prince normally wouldn't watch them. This one he watched immediately!!
