You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It seems like some in the audience didn't really know who they were. They got applause but it was polite. I'm still not sure who's idea was to have them perform. This was supposed to be a Prince tribute, not a Purple Rain movie tribute or a tribute to the Mpls sound. Maybe if Bruno Mars had performed with them and they sang Baby I'm a Star or something... since jimmy jam is on the grammy commity probably was his idea to have the time do it.didnt seem as if they wanted to trinute him{the show{ the way it ws worded.i would of felted better if they had of just shown prince clips and portions of interviews as a trinute

Please stop these guys have known Prince since he was a child and Jimmy Jam is on the Grammy Committe. Why can't associate artist be on these programs. It is bad enough that they keep RnB artist off the damm show in favor of country groups. Can't we have one RnB/Funk band on national T.V without it being a problem.

Don't turn it into a race thing it has nothing to do with that. Btw, I actually wanted someone like Lenny Kravitz singing Dreamer so... [Edited 2/13/17 8:12am] Paisley Park is in your heart

Who mentioned "race"? | |

I am not turning it into race. RnB bands can be made up of any race of people. Did you forget about Monte Moir in The Time?
The Grammies have been placing to many country and bland pop groups on the air for years now. I believe with the acception of one RnB catorgory all RnB awards are given out before the show.
No Jazz and No Gospel. Do you think this happens for no reason. [Edited 2/13/17 15:40pm]

Plus they don't give out that many awards during the ceremony anymore; it's mostly performances. And since you say it happens for a reason what's the reason then? [Edited 2/14/17 16:01pm] I guess you missed Metallica . The reason is that they the powers that be do not appreciate RNB music, or know anything about. There are quite a few article written about this nonsense this week. I will find the links and post. I think if we can a half dozen country acts running around we could put at least black band on national T.V and give them more that two minutes.( that crap with The Time was disgraceful)

when I "win the lottery" I will . personally . pay 5 million dollars each to Morris Jesse Terry Jimmy Jam Monte & Jellybean . to be THE TIME that I knew & saw . KICK ALL KINDS OF ASS . on the "controversy" & "1999" tours in Richmond VA back in '82 and '83 . unless you actually saw THE TIME on either of those tours.. . y'all just don't know.. I'll see you tonight..

My tv broke. We can't change the channel 'cuz my little sister lost the plyers. I didn't see the performace. When I google The Time and Grammys all I get is some fake black man, in a fake funk band playing the wrong chords on Let's GO Crazy and soloing like a complete amatuer. He was wearing Prince clothes. He had his guitar. I heard he borrowed Prince silky draws and didn't wash 'em neither.... to keep his performance authentic! WTF!! Were Pawws and The Wevolution not available? You know... just some puppies dressed like Prince doing their thing. Prince would have liked that. I doubt he's comfortable, in the heavens, with the idea that somebody is wearing his draws and poorly playing his songs, using chords they probably got from ultimate-guitar five minutes before showtime.

I thought the Time were great but it was definitely from generations past for some of the audience. Still whenever the Original 7 are together it's special and I loved Morris's shout out to Prince to kick it off and as always Jesse's guitar playing. Bruno was awesome I thought - even though his solo sucked you could imagine a young Prince at Grammy's 85 powering away on electric guitar as you watched Bruno Mars perform. Best Prince tribute to date in my opinion.

At the Grammy awards show I thought Morris sang really well. He and Jerome still look good, they have aged well. The audience looked like they were enjoying their performance. However Bruno's Prince impersonation was cringeworthy. It would have been better to have The Revolution perform instead of Bruno.

This is a program on network TV, and they're going to try to get the highest ratings as possible to get the big money from companies buying advertising on it. At the moment, country music as a genre is more popular than rock and R&B. Country is the genre that has the highest sales of actual CDs (in the USA) rather than downloads, free or paid. Farm Aid concerts have been going on since 1985. The acts booked on Farm Aid are usually country and heartland rock like Bob Seger & John Mellencamp. There's 2 different country music awards shows to itself on free network TV. R&B award shows are either on cable niche channels like BET or syndicated, where the ratings don't have to be as high and they're not really trying to reach mainstream USA like the major 3 networks. The Latin Grammys come on Univison, where the Latino audience is more likely to watch it, not on ABC, NBC, or CBS. I don't think rock n roll has any award shows on TV at all. There's a prog rock awards, but not on TV. So it doesn't make much sense ratings wise to show genres that a mainstream audience is going to turn the channel on or not going to draw them to watch the show in the first place. Like the Grammys has never really shown many acts who do spoken word, pop instrumentals, traditional blues, or polka on the TV broadcast although there's categories for them. It works for me. Maybe it's blocked in your country. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
