GREAT HITMAKERS

and geniuses in taking the experience of seeing a 'vision of a world lived through music via Prince' and translated it to Janet Jackson... Control Rhythm Nation Janet Velvet Rope... and certain other connections to Janet ...

But definately Great Hitmakers

"I'm playing the bad guy," says Prince, "but I didn't fire Jimmy and Terry. Morris asked me what I would do in his situation. Remember, it was his band."

Despite the rap, Prince says, he harbors no ill will toward the now-famous producers working across town from Paisley Park at their Flyte Time studios. "We're friends," he says. "We know each other like brothers. Jimmy always gave me a lot of credit for getting things going in Minneapolis, and I'm hip to that. Terry's more aloof, but I know that." And their music? "Terry and Jimmy aren't into the Minneapolis sound," Prince says. "They're into making every single one of their records a hit. Not that there's anything wrong with that, we're just different."

I don't think it's either/or. They obvious make great music. Those are hitmakers.

But the genius comes in, like any great producer, when they are able to find the core of the artist's vision and what they want to say, and pull that out of them whether musically or lyrically. Janet, as an example, has such different albums that it's a testament to all of them working together, but really to J&L finding Janets voice musically and letting her shine. Her work always felt more forced on the couple of albums she didn't work with them. Unbreakable is a genius record, and her best since The Velvet Rope. Jam & Lewis are much more than someone who might write a clever hook.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
