Prince and Renato Neto Prince was always raving about Renato .I wonder why. Renato did play ok jazz lounge piano solos but he was miserable whenever he played synthisizer solos. I dare you to listen to any synth solo played by Renato. his synth solos sound childish amateur and he is maybe the worst synth soloist ever. Morris Hayes was killing it everytime on synths when he was a duo keyboardist with Renato. So what did Prince actually see in Renato?

Wasn't there some article in which Prince explained that renato was a master at piano/keyboard harmony or something like that (something Prince suggested he was incapable of doing himself). Prince said his keyboard strengths were in flair (not harmonies). I would suggest that Prince was good rhythmically as well.
I think Renato is good. Not everything "jazzy' or mellow belongs in a Las Vegas lounge. (Maybe the main room in Las Vegas..LOL). Lounge acts (unless they were the brilliant Louis Prima) are usually not the best. Sinatra, Elvis etc were not "lounge" singers. they were main room performers.
That being said, Hayes synth funk is cool.

Really? I thought Renato had good solos during Montreux 2009. I will have to watch more Morris Hayes and compare the two.

I can´t judge his synth solos since I am not a synth player but Renato is a great arranger. I saw him with Sheila and Eric Leeds in Hamburg in 1994 and the versions of the songs they played sounded great. Not as spacey and stretched out like the stuff he did with Prince though. I didn´t even know it was Renato back then because he had very long hair but in 2002 I asked Eric Leeds who was responsible for those great arrangements of the 1994 show and he told me it was Renato´s work (and Renato was standing right next to him while Eric was telling me this) and that he had long hair and that´s probably why I didn´t recognize him. . However, I do agree with you that Morris Hayes is a very good player and very underrated. I can´t judge his technical prowess but what I can judge is that I like what I hear when he plays. I´m not much into synth sounds but the organ sounds he creates sound very cool to me . I still enjoy listening to the live rendition of 18&Over where Morris played the organ solos. Not exactly my favorite song but that live version of it was superb. . While watching the Montreux 2009 show I was a bit surprised that Morris Hayes wasn´t mentioned when Prince introduced the whole band to the audience. Everybody got a mention but not Morris, which is weird considering how close they were but maybe he just forgot. People rarely give Morris the recognition that he deserves. He´s definitely one of my all time favorite band members and a very humble and kind human being. Great guy through and through. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Im not obsessed with synth solos.synths solos are one of the foundations of funk. from Commodores arp omni fiesta called Machine Gun to modern day funk. Yes Renato plays great when he plays acoustic piano jazz but when he plays synth solos he have the worst sound and worst ideas i everheard in funk music. Liusten toi that digital crap sounding solos he did on The Rainbow Children live. When he start playing with Prince i thought wow this guy is amazing. but first signs of trouble were when i heard his synth solos on 1 plus 1 plus 1 3. Renato Can play keyboards but he cant play funky synth solos. he can never come up with something like Get It Up solo and it is weird because that is supossed to be easy task for him

Renato is a technically well playing keyboard player, but his playing is a bit too much on the safe side (sweet/inoffensive) for me. His playing is good but bores me a bit, not wild and funky enough in most cases. Prince definately has had funkier keyboard players and I agree that Renato's lead synths sounded too sterile/digital often. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

What I think is... that it's pathetic when people who presumably don't know a thing about music come and make such comment as "childish amateur" or "worst soloist ever" or "miserable" about people who are high standard professionals, super skilled people, and in that case was playing in arguably the most technically skilled configuration of all of Prince's band, Prince himself having been one of the world's most demanding pop artist. I mean the sheer level of ignorance and arrogance it takes to make such a statement! You know, it's like when this other donkey once said that Prince needed to take drum lessons, or those people claiming that Hannah or Donna couldn't play. It's just beyond absurd. The talents of Prince's various musicians can be discussed to some extent, but to assume anyone being able to play in Prince's band could be anything less that a highly trained professional is just so ridiculous. . You could come-up with some constructed, reasonable criticizing of Renato's playing style, you certainly do not have to appreciate the esthetic aspects of what he was doing. You could say that you have doubts about his technical skills, admit your ignorance and ask other contributors for their opinion. But to come here and claim that Renato is an amateur, miserable and the worst soloist ever! Well, no he isn't. Renato happens to be an amazing keyboard player. He certainly didn't master the funk style as well as Morris, Morris himself being at the very top of the game in that regard (but probably not as well versed in jazz as Renato), but he certainly is a remarkable musician, a professional with an impressive resume (not just with Prince) and he has the merit of being, alongside maybe Lisa, the only keyboard player Prince ever had that had an immediately recognizable sound of his own. . And yeah, I have listened to his solos, and I love 'em. . Please just show some bloody humility and respect unless you yourself have accomplished anything half as fabulous as those people have! I just found your choice of words highly disrespectful, particularly knowing that Renato could perfectly come here and read this. I wasn't half as disrespectful to you as you were to Renato. Being a professional artist yourself you should therefore know the level of commitment and sacrifice our jobs demand, how much effort for (too often) so little reward beyond the sheer bliss of doing what we do, so my point is artists are to be shown respect. Constructive criticism is OK but bashing really is a no go. I'm pretty sensitive about this because I'm used to seeing non artists being judgmental towards us without having a clue of how much easier it would have been to just get a normal job and live a normal life (very boring, but much easier). However we shouldn't be bashing each other, we artists should instead be supportive of each other A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Ok Data didn't wNt to upset you,Renato is really good at what he does, latin tingled jazzy acoustic piano style.he plays what he plays very well.the reason i am maybe a little harsh is because those synth funk solos are supposed to be so easy for him yet he sounds confused whenever he goes into Bernie Worrel,Junie Morrison,Bryan loren,Morris Hayes Dr Fink world of funky stanky synth lines.so he is a good adition for jazzy solos but synth solos r not his thing.ad for at least a decade he is presenting himself in a funk domain.same story goes for his Funk Rock Candy band.and aside of what he plays his actuall synth sound is really bad.listen to his extended solos on rhe Rainbow Children live.tell me u like his choices of sounds and his actual playing on that.Cassandra was a breathe of fresh air compared to him.listen to her stanky synth solos Paris 2011gig in studio c. Im critical about only one aspect of his playng like i am critical about Shelby or Wendy being the worst guitar soloist Prince had.but i like those guys.i know i am not rhe only orger thinking this way but others avoid potencial confrontation.

IDK why but keyboard players are a rare species. Back in the late 90's when I was trying to form a band I had loads of candidates for guitar, drums and bass, but finding a keyboard player was nearly impossible while the music I wanted to make needed at least one, if not 2 keys. In the end I was so fed-up with it that I swapped to pure electronic music with a single guy on machines and samplers, and this guy was my whole band, and it was perfect A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
