If you include The Time as a Prince band, I'd say Jesse Johnson. If not, then I'd go with Andre Cymone.

Hhmmm. Great question.
It would be easier to break it down into at least:
Vox
Percussion
Horns
Strings
Keys
etc

But I don't want to change your thread 🙂

Too many for me to choose from and I don't know the musicianship of all of them as well as some of you. But I do love watching Blackwell play, also. Maybe Sheila E as well.
I'll probably come back to this thread as I remember and watch things.

Its tough because there were different eras and technology going on. For me to be honest its tough to rate especially on Guitar because PRINCE always was taking the solos but Donna from 3rd Eye Girl, seriously is off the charts. Drums its really tough because he has had some of the best with him always. I mean John Blackwell maybe by a hair is the best, but my favorite is Hannah and Michael B just because Prince seemed to really jam best with them, John Blackwell seemed almost in his own world when he played, but Hannah and Michael for me are more gritty and raw.

I am partial to the 3rdeyegirl band members. But to throw another one out, Renato Neto. This is hard, they were all excellent.

I agree that every decade there are standouts. It is hard to say the best. Prince had so many talented musicians around him each era.

I don't think Prince would've labeled one better than the other since each offered an incredible level of skill and talent. I can say who I enjoy watching over and over again, and for me that is drummer, John Blackwell.
