Sheila E salutes Prince with purpose, dignity and spirit at Orchestra Hall. Review: Her tribute Sunday at Orchestra Hall celebrated his commitment to causes.
.
Prince was never one to give speeches. In probably his last high-profile national TV appearance, the 2015 Grammy Awards, he simply said: "Like books and black lives, albums still matter." .
If you were to ever encounter him offstage, he might have said: "Kids matter. Education matters. Foodshelves matter." But instead of giving speeches about those issues, he quietly gave money to organizations that promoted youth programs, education and hunger relief. His gifts were usually anonymous. .
The late Minnesota music icon's humanitarism was celebrated Sunday night at Orchestra Hall with a concert organized by Sheila E, his former drummer and fiancée, with proceeds going to Purple Philanthropy, various causes that he supported. . With a cast that included youth performers, former Prince collaborators and Sheila E's own band, this two-hour tribute was a triumph of dignity, grace, spirit, emotion, purpose, music and, of course, charity. . The 58-year-old drummer/singer jammed about 28 songs (mostly by Prince), a sincere sermon from herself and short testimonials from officials at Twin Cities organizations that Prince funded into an efficient, often exciting program that made Purple fans soon forget the unwieldy, nearly five-hour Official Prince Tribute Concert 10 days earlier in St. Paul starring Stevie Wonder and a cast of nearly 100. . . [Edited 10/24/16 11:51am] I wish I could have gone to this. I spent too much time and money the week before on the official tribute, but this sounds lovely. So bummed I missed it. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

BrownMark already said on his podcast that The Revolution is going to tour as soon as Lisa and Wendy become available. THIS is the one I need to see.
Morris has been doing his for a while. The tribute he did at First Avenue was the same tribute he did during one of his tour shows over the Summer with Kool and the Gang.

I understand that. Wendy and Lisa has contract committment with several networks. They already booked scoring with two shows. So they might do something next spring when the shows goes on hiataus. And that would be perfect too as life start to blossom again after spring lol and especially in brutal winters in Minnisota. But if they are going to tour they likely go beyond Minni.
I am trying to get into scoring business myself and learning more about the guitar and then keyboard and if I make it then I will give a shoutout to Prince, Sheila E and Wendy and Lisa for made it possible for women to play instruments.

I agree Sheila would have been successful with or without Prince but as just a backup drummer and she is fine with that. I think Prince put her on the map for stardom and also since she already stated she don't feel comfortable being a frontwoman. And as a matter of fact I read parts of her book and it appears she earned more money being a drummer for others than Prince and she lost money of being with Prince. She respected and love Prince and show is showing her way and he gave her the recognization but financially she benefit more drummed for others.

. There might be. I wouldn't be surprised to see several CD/DVD's coming out of these tributes in the coming months. I'm sure Sheila E. will do something.

-This is a review of Sheila E show not the tribute concert. Why keep bringing up a concert from a week ago.

The StarTrib is doing what media do: report and review. If Sheila had not scheduled her "tribute" in the immediate aftermath of the "Official Tribute," from which she was conspicuously absent, this would not be happening.

This show has nothing to do with the tribute concert. Why bring up the tribute show at all. In addition, Sheila explained that she could not get out of the show in New York so she decided to do this instead. You realize his family was at this event and this was for charity!

laurarichardson, why must you always address folks like they are ignorant? Of course, I DO "understand" and "realize" everything to which you allude, and ALL of that (and more) lead to my conclusion that Sheila's scheduling of her benefit "tribute" concert, in Minneapolis, just days after the "Official Tribute," invites (indeed GUARANTEES) comparisons like the StarTrib's. You DO realize that I am entitled to my opinion, right? Moreover, you DO understand that you don't have to agree with me, yes? PEACE.

not sure who the ignorant people are in this equation, but I don't think Jon Bream from the Strib was "taking a dig" by mentioning the other MPLS Prince tribute, also led by and featuring Prince associate(s) performing Prince songs, that took place a week prior (and probably attracted a lot of the same crowd). Bream's job is reviewing concerts and of the 2 tributes in MPLS in the course of a week he preferred the second. He's allowed.

Jon Bream is reviewing the first tribute again a week later while reviewing Sheila E show as well. In my opinion it is not necessary to bring it up again. Is he going to go back and review the triubute concert every time an associate does a show? I also think you and others have not been keeping up with The Triubene and their shit with Prince and his death. disch said: not sure who the ignorant people are in this equation, but I don't think Jon Bream from the Strib was "taking a dig" by mentioning the other MPLS Prince tribute, also led by and featuring Prince associate(s) performing Prince songs, that took place a week prior (and probably attracted a lot of the same crowd). I've been keeping up with the StarTrib's sometimes negative, sensationalistic Prince coverage since his passing...but I've also been keeping up with Sheila's money grubbing. After being called out, she suddenly did a benefit concert. We see you, Sheila...at least some of us do. '
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
LOL thanks for my morning laugh. I haven't been keeping up with the Strib's coverage? Okay, sure. Despite the theory that "the media" is conspiring to concoct negative stories about Prince as part of some master plan, very few outlets are actually even bothering to conduct original reporting on issues relating to Prince's death. The Strib is one that is actually investing in straight-up original journalism. Because the reality is, despite these media-conspiracy theories, most reputable media outlets have moved on from this story. - Jon Bream, however, is a critic, not an investigative reporter. His job is to provide his opinion based on his analysis of what he experienced. He covers Twin Cities concerts so unless the tribute concert is happening there, you don't have to worry about comparisons because it's unlikely he'll be writing about it.

Sheila has been touring on and off for several years promoting Icon, her book, etc. The tickets are usually pretty cheap and in smaller venues. For her to mention that she will be doing some Prince songs in tribute is hardly a money grab. Do you want these artists he has worked with to become silent about him and act like they had no connection, while other artists who had no connection with him are out there doing his songs too? She is keeping his legacy alive and his family doesn't seem to have an issue with what she's doing. TRUE BLUE

I'm referring to the love symbol t-shirts, cruises, etc. There's no shame in making money, but don't suddenly try to make it seem, like some on here are doing, that Sheila is donating to charity everything that she has made since Prince's passing. That is simply not true.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I agree with Flyonthewall. It's getting to be bit much where Sheila is concerned. Let her sing all the songs she wants. But enough of taking advantage of Prince's death.
