I'm sorry, but The Mary Jane Girls ARE better than Vanity6 Recently i was listening to "only for you", not their best album but still pretty good, and I'm sorry, but Vanity6's album doesn't even come close, and Apollonia6's sure doesn't either. ~KiKi

Obviously, the Mary Jane Girls could sing better than the Vanity/Apollonia girls. And,in the end,the MJGs had more hits and overall success.
But I still love Vanity 6 and their first album

Even though MJG are better singers, they never made an album or - mostly importantly - a video that was better than Vanity 6.
Let's face it - they both were cheescake girl groups that were mostly there to give you a hard on; not blow you away with vocals like Chaka Khan or Teena Marie Thus Vanity 6 wins the overall rating - and would walk away with it if they had made more than one record. Brenda is on her way over to kick your ass. And let's be honest, anyone in their right mind should know better than to piss Brenda off!

MJG in a Breeze.the Cool thing Rick James did with them was allow them to Sing&also have Songs that were more than just a Beat or Hook.I liked Vanity 6's debut but aside from "Nasty Girl&if a Girl Calls don't hang up" they don't have alot going on to Mess with MJG IMHO.I'd take "In My House" Alone over 85% of the V6&A6 Material in a Breeze. mistermaxxx

Hmmm...I would argue that the debut Mary Jane Girls album is at least as good as the Vanity 6 album.Strangely enough, both groups made disappointing follow-ups.The second Mary Jane Girl album 'Only Four You' (1986) is saved only by it's awesome lead-off single "In My House".The Apollonia 6 album has it's share of problems too,but that's another thread...lol...

Did you guys know that there is a third album by the Mary Jane Girls that has never been released? It's called 'Conversation' and was produced by Rick James in 1986.The problem is,Rick was feuding with Motown at the time, and this created a tug-of-war situation with the Mary Jane Girls.Rick left the label and wanted to take the girls with him.As a result, the album remains locked in the vaults.
Hopefully, one day,Motown will finally release it!

Anybody who was a Prince fan in the early 80s were aware of the musical rivalry & the strong animosity between Prince & Rick James. Remember Rick coined the phrase "Punk-Funk" and Prince I think fell under that musical style as well. When Rick caught wind of V6 he probably thought "I could show him up" and came up with MJ Girls . I think he created a group in answer to The Time called Process & The Do Rags also.

Rick actually claimed that the idea of a sexy girl group was HIS idea. But Prince beat him to the punch when the Vanity 6 album came out months before the Mary Jane Girls. In 1982,Rick was also planning to do a movie about his rise to fame.It was to be called "Spice Of Life".But,it never got off the ground and then Prince came out with the 'Purple Rain' film a few years later. So,it was always a case of Prince getting projects done before Rick did.
