Bilal Covers Prince's "Sister" w/The Roots, Featuring Wendy Melvoin

This was done before Prince's passing, so he must have seen it. I wonder what were his thoughts about it. I apologize, in advance, if this has been shared here before. Thoughts???

No the video wasn't Carniegie Hall. That was the Tribute 2 Prince music: the Roots as the House band /Wendy Melvoin on Guitar... many guests. Susannah St Paul Eric Leeds etc and many other doing renditions of Prince's music. It was a good show

This video you posted was at the City Winery, they did a few other shows

Thanks, OldFriends4Sale!! I was wondering about that discrepancy. Surprisingly, the sound is much better at the City Winery than at the vaunted Carnegie Hall. Be that as it may, Bilal is a BEAST. Few can cover Prince with such aplomb.

The Roots are the worst. I get that they were doing an interpretation, but just in general, they ride Prince's dick too much all while not having anything comparitively great of their own. It's embarassing.

I get that they are great musicians, have a history, and want to make something interesting. But their last album sounded more like it was GarageBand samples, and clips of stuff they found on Vine.

I don't know who came up w/ the "Sister" arrangement, but it needs to stop.

There's a fine line between original and shit.

Nobody can do it like Prince, that's for sure. I think this arrangement is intense. I like it.

That doesn't mean she had anything to do with all that. Even she looked disinterested in it.

I could not agree more!!!! I would love to see them do a Prince tribute album. Bilal's voice is nothing short of exquisite, very Prince-esque

PREACH! It's like watching male groupies. I always got the impression Prince tolerated The Roots and Bilal. They are great musicians but Prince's music speaks for itself and there is no need for a tribute album-especially when Prince said it clear as day that he doesn't care for male vocalists.

Okay, but just know, folks are STILL reeling over Bilal's debut album, 1st Born Second. This article says it ALL. Bottom line: Fresh off his stint as guest lead vocalist for The Revolution, Bilal is more relevant than ever.

THE REVISIT: BILAL’S â€... SECOND’

"Bilal has been heralded for lending his vocals to Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly in 2015, but the closing track on First Born Second is more relevant today, 15 years later, than ever. Speaking tothe status of Black Americans in this country, Bilal digs into a rawness that only he can deliver. The psychedelic instrumentation literally emulates the state of insanity many of us are finding ourselves in after months of seeing ourselves killed by police on loop. I couldn’t think of a better way to end this incredible album.

Bilal’s career over the last 15 years has taken him all over the world and his fans across the musical landscape. We’ve loved. We’ve been fed up. We’ve been feenin’. We’ve felt loss. Bilal’s music was there for all of it and served as the perfect score. Read More...

No.

All I said was "no." I'm not sure how that qualifies as "heaping crap" on anyone. But then, I've seen no evidence that you possess a sense of proportion. Or sense, in general.

I know it's selfish of me, but I wish folks would stop singing P's songs.

Especially folks who deliberately try to sound like him.

It just makes me sad.
