Good question, but I have no idea how much Apples or the rest of the cast of Purple Rain got paid. All I know in one of Vanity/Denise's interveiws she said that one of the reasons she left the film was because Prince only wanted to pay her $5000 for the part, while the producers of The Last Dragon were gonna pay her $300,000. Yeah, I know. I read that too. That's why I was asking how much did Apples get paid. I heard it was 80,000 that Vanity got paid for The Last Dragon. Maybe they meant after taxes LOL! |

Yuuuuuup, I am pretty sure that when all these tell-all books about Prince are released, in the next few years we might know the answer....or maybe not, depending on who is running the estate. Keep Calm & Listen To Prince |

This is sort of off topic but as much as I loved the movie and Prince and Appolonia individually I felt she was the wrong person for the role. She seemed too "old" for lack of a better word. I didn't feel any chemistry between them. She looked matronly even with her bosom on display imo. I'm probably in the minority, and it's beside the point anyway lol It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN |

To be fair she only got the role at the last minute, when Vanity left. She did ok, she was nice........but it was Vanity's role, and she would have killed it had she done the film because of her chemistry with Prince and her vampy persona. [Edited 8/17/16 22:25pm] Keep Calm & Listen To Prince |

Maybe I'm wrong? I know she got The Last Dragon role and a record contract with Motown, alot more than the Purple Rain role. Keep Calm & Listen To Prince |

I've never said it to anyone, but I thought that she was simply pretty but not a replacement for V. Dammit, I wish V had stuck around long enough to have done some test shots or something so we could compare the performances. I think V would've nailed the role. |

Apples was nice, and the girls didn't really mesh as Apollonia 6 (others may disagree).....but I prefer Vanity 6, they had more chemistry, especially during their live shows. Keep Calm & Listen To Prince |

Nooooooo, you are not in the minority. I feel the same way. I always thought Apples was much older than Vanity. Turns out, Vanity is 7 months older than Apples. Your right, I didn't feel/see any chemistry between them either(and tbh, I thought it was just bad acting on P's part, LOL!) Even though Vanity is not one of my favorite Prince girls, I DO wished she has starred in this movie with Prince. I feel (we ALL did back in the 80's) the chemistry and the whole movie would have been better. But I guess it wasn't meant to be... [Edited 8/18/16 6:28am] |

You know what I thought about guys. Vanity should have been a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild). Don't know if she actually was but she SHOULD have been. I mean, she was not a newbie to the business (acted and modeled before). If she had been a member there'd be no way in hell they would get away with offering her such an insulting and meager amount of money for something she co-wrote and was going to STAR in (co star, but star in never the less). Who knows though. She was probably so enthralled with P, and "out of it" half the time she just wasn't thinking. I could be wrong, but I bet Apples got more than 5,000 dollars. If she didn't, it would only be because it was her "debut" and she just wanted to make a name for herself (even so, she must have been mighty desparate) It's sad though, because when I looked up the annual salary of a person making minimum wage ($7.25 an hour) a full time employee makes $15,080 per year. If you go to Wikipedia the budget for that movie was 7.2 million, and grossed 68.4 million at the box office. And they wanna pay the co-star of a movie the amout they would give an extra on a movie set. SMDH |

interestingly, when Vanity left, there was an audition to find a new actress for the role.Actress Jennifer Beals, who was riding high thanks to the hugely successful 1983 'Flashdance' movie, showed up to audition for the Purple Rain role.

YEP!! You said it. It was Vanities role. And she would have killed it. Almost like the way she 'slayed' her version of Sex Shooter.
That is the one missing element, along with Jimmy Jam Terry Lewis & Monte not being there. That movie had a large majority of people who were a part of Prince's band(s), camp and life. |

no one got a big paycheck. prince's managment paid the bands their regular weekly fees- that's why morris was pissed off and broke and didn't promote it. also why vanity left- she asked for more money and p said no. that 7 million was for the film; gear, technicians etc.
+=
apollonia was the only outsider so she wasnot under contract with prince's management and could negotiate a better fee. i agree that apollonia did not do the same job that vanity would have done. P & V would burned the cinemas down! but apples's lightness is a good balance to all the darkness in the film- the way it's shot and the subject matter.
+=
none of them could act wet in a rainstorm, but p, morris and jerome shine on film because of their natural charisma. i think jerome had the best chance for a career in movies, and he looked beautiful on film. p looks pretty when he pouts. morris has great timing but is stiff and self-conscious. with a little more training he could have gotten more work in film too.

Not that "educated" when it comes to the industry (so school me). How could Vanity just walk out under contract. And like I said in my post, doesn't being a member of SAG protect the artist (just like unions protect factory workers ect.) from being underpaid, unfair practices and what not. Matter of fact, I think ALL actors HAVE to belong to that union (SAG). |

well briefly, you are not automatically a member of SAG or any of the guilds. there are membership fees and qualifications. no one except for AK would have had SAG memberships. AK had done some screen work before so by the time she got to PR she may have been a member. you are correct about the protections of the guilds, it's about getting in and being able to manintain a workload that allows u to keep your membership and insurance. there may have been consequences. her contract, like the other musicians, would have been with PRN productions and or management, cavallo, rufallo, fargnoli. she was such a hellcat back then, they might have said 'good riddence'. i'm not sure. i would check old interviews for that info. she said that when she left prince she was broke. same with morris. if the management team wanted to pursue it they could have sued her for breech of contract which would have left her broke, too.

prince ran his oraganization like a franchise of WB records: he was the daily/store manager. he hired and fired people, supervised their daily activites(rehearsal and recording)they anwsered to him directly. the financing came from WB records and was distributed through his management team to the musicians. he paid them small weekly checks so there would not be enough to pay bills and save. they recieved little or none of the money from touring merchandise. the revolution said that they got a $1 million bonus after the PR tour. but prince made enough money to build PP. that's why brownmark was ready to walk before the Parade tour. Yep, he did run his organization like a franchise of WB I also read on iloveoldschoolmusic.com that he and Morris D. got into an actual fist fight during the filming of PR. Now see, that's news to me (the fact that he paid them all small weekly amounts) because people were saying that he was only giving Vanity a meager amount becuase she was using drugs. But even so, you can't NOT pay someone what you owe them just because they have a "habit" that you disagree with. That's like someone's boss telling them, "You can't get your pay check this week because you're an alchaholic and I know your gonna spend it on achohol". And that person has been functioning as a responsible worker the whole week and put in their 40 hours. Even though I've been critical of Vanity in the past, I don't "hate" the lady, and that was just plain WRONG and UNFAIR. That's why I say P put that girl through a LOT for her to be his "main squeeze". But yeah...that whole thing was crazy. Thanks for the info. |

I understand that Purple Rain was a low budget movie and nobody really got a big paycheck for their work...but after the movie grossed almost $70 million,I think everyone should have gotten some kinda bonus or something.Morris definitely deserved some more money.

Not sure but whatever she made and continues to make was enough for her to purchase properties in CA, Hawaii, and Paris. Plus she has some type of multi-media entertainment company - Kotero Entertianment. She obviously has made some smart financial decisions
