vuvuzela said: So what did y'all think about the $1 million dollar part? Sounds like the typical Old Skool Music Industry mess of "spend now but explain later" we've seen destroy artists finances since the dawn of the record business. It's that tried and true story of being a young new artist, and no one having explained the business part of show business that your record label is basically a bank...and while you're signed to them every cent spent on you from your stage design to the toilet paper bought to wipe your ass is going to be recouped...come hell or high water. I bet she paid real close attention to her contractual agreements and potential conflicts of interests with everyone she worked with from that day forward. It's a whole different animal being the sideman vs. being the act itself when it comes to how the coins are managed

Yes, and also which tour is she referring to do you think? It seems a little unspecfic in the book as to where it fits in the timeline. Early 90's maybe? [Edited 7/18/16 9:27am] Listen to me closely as the story unfolds

@ vuvuzela
She is referring to The Purple Rain Tour. I think it was really Warner Bros. that was trying to pursue the money issue, but Prince wasn't playing Knight in shining armor either, lol. He could have went to bat for her. She didn't have a good contract if she was paying to use the equipment on the tour she was playing in! Damn that was rough... This is her fault of course by not being aware of her own contract and not paying attention to her spending habits, but I'm not gonna be political correct right now in saying that my ego would have been a little bruise if here I was sleeping with my multi millionaire superstar boyfriend and his camp is trying to squeeze a million dollar out of me due to the shady contract deal they swindled me with, knowing that I was kind'a sort'a his girl, lol. That had to hurt... [Edited 7/18/16 21:01pm]

What about her transport and hotel room etc, I thought PRN productions looked after that? Did that also apply to The Time and Vanity 6 when they opened for Prince in 1983? [Edited 7/18/16 22:28pm] Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

It was not Prince it was his managment and when he fired his managemet after the Lovesexy tour the same management came after him for fees and commissions. Alan Leeds has said that his managers were shady.
Sheila E also said she did get a outside auditor and did get the debt reduced. She also said that she paid the rest off and I assume that was from working for Prince has his drummer and on his productions so he helped her.

Yes, I mentioned it was the Warner Bros.team not Prince. To be exact, it was actually Prince's account managers. The Beat of My Own Drum pg 240: "So it came as the most dreadful, terrible shock when Prince’s account managers told me that I was a million dollars in debt. “You owe us a lot of money, Sheila,” they said. “How do you want to start paying us back?” In the book Sheila E did not state that Prince helped her in anyway. She actually seemed a little annoyed at Prince with how she worded her comments on the situation. The Beat Of My Own Drum Pg 240: "Prince’s managers were my managers, and yet nobody had advised me separately. I bear full responsibility for the bills I incurred, but I have to say it hurt to think that neither Prince nor his team came off that tour in debt, as I did. When I went through the final accounts for equipment, wardrobe, hairstylists, flights, food, and drink, I realized that they’d made me pay for everything. They even charged me to use sound equipment that was already there. I felt like such a fool." [Edited 7/19/16 5:40am]

How is that not helping her? She did not have a band to pay anymore and later she lived in his house. Once again how is that not helping? She also said on Entertainment Tonight and said an independent auditor found it was not quiet a million.

All I said was, she didn't mention him helping her out of that specific situation in the book. I'm just going by what the book entailed. Just having a discussion on the book and what she said. Her words not mine. No need to take offense. Didn't mean to upset anyone by having a discussion on a book I didn't write... Did you read the book? ( not saying that as a dig btw) but She did have to pay her band on that tour. Some of them were with her. Again, just discussing what was said in the book. Please don't take offense. [Edited 7/18/16 22:28pm] It says in the book that she had to pay back transportation. She stated herself that she got attached to the wealthy life style and pretty much got whatever kind of car she wanted for transportation and put it on the tab. She wasn't being careful. Not sure if this same situation applied to Vanity 6 and The Time as I'm only going by what Sheila E's book stated and she didn't mention if that same system applied to all his groups. ----- I am not taking offense but would it not make sense that her going to be in his band and giving up her band ( which is what happened when she went to play drums for him doing the Sign Of The Times/ Lovesexy tour ) would have helped with her debt? She would have been earning a check instead of generating more debt by keeping her band going. I am just puzzled these days with some of the post on this board. Not offended I guess just puzzled.

Ok, good info. That makes sense because she had to have been an act on the tour and just a member of the band for all that debt to occur (right?). I can't imagine the thoughts that went through her head when she found out... Listen to me closely as the story unfolds

This is an interesting point because I'm wondering if she was signed under the Paisley Park label imprint for which Prince would be in charge (?) as her music producer and record executive. Perhaps The Time and Vanity 6 were before the vanity label was established, therefore, although P was the producer, they were signed to WB directly? I really don't know - I'm just wondering if this could be the case. It really is kinda of lazy that P's managers became her managers by default, but I doubt she would have challenged him at that point in their (sorta) relationship. Listen to me closely as the story unfolds

Most artists set up an alternative company to pay for tour expenses. Didn't Brenda say that Prince gave his credit card to Vanity to buy Vanity 6 clothes, what they needed etc on the 1999 tour? Can't find the quote, but I am sure the tour debt was billed directly to Prince's reps. Remember the food fight of Cleveland '82? Prince sent the bill for damages to The Time which initially came to him.

Later Prince would have problems with them.

I got the impression from Denise after she found God and would do radio interviews that Prince controlled the money..so he paid for everything, she lived with him and was even in a separate tour bus with him only (not the rest of V6) during the 1999 tour, i don't think she really got ''paid'' which was one of the reasons she left him..if she needed something she would go to him and he would dish out the cash, credit cards, etc. to get her what she needed, along with what V6 needed.
.
He was very controlling of Denise and her life..i guess the philosophy was (she said) that the less money she had the less she could do on her own without him..and eventually leave him..which he feared..he was a really jealous man with her.
. With Sheila, thats crazy and really sad she was treated that way!!!!!!! ''The beautiful ones they hurt you every tiiiiime....''

Yes, Prince's managers were Vanity 6 as well as the Time's . Only Morris and Vanity had recording contracts with WB. The rest of the people in the group were paid out of his pocket. I always believed this is the reason he kept all the credit for the songs to recoup his expenses.
Some of you need to go do some Googling Vanity talked a lot about her time with Prince right after she left the fold and went to Motown.

Very nice pic of her. Is that an engagement ring I see on that left hand??
take it easy.. Lol. She said Prince didn't buy her an engagement ring. She said she never really like to wear rings and being that she was a drummer it would have been hard to keep one on anyway. I still felt bad for her though A girl needs a diamond! I would have worn the darn thing around my neck, but gimme my ring! [Edited 7/23/16 18:22pm]
