Very, very sad day. Even if the tumors are positive, he may need surgery. He will not be able to play the drums anymore. So sad to loose Prince's best drummer and what about all the memories he had with Prince? Damn!

That was my first thought: If Prince were alive, he would likely cover all of Mr. Blackwell's expenses. It's all so sad.

--- I remember John Blackwell saying that Prince actually paid him a retainer at one point. Meaning he paid him to not work for anyone else in between projects.

I read an article in the Washington Post just last week about musicans not having insurance or they have insurance with low premiums and high deductiables. John may have insurance but not enough to cover brain surgery or chemo. I am sure someone will have a fund raiser for him and I am sure if Prince were alive he would have stepped up.

Maybe his medical insurance does not cover medical treatment in Japan? He was in Japan so he had to be hospitalized in Japan, so this seems serious. Blackwell was not with Prince for ages and these guys are all session musicians. They only get paid when they tour etc.

My wife and I had an opportunity to meet and talk with John during the first Dallas Musicology stop. What a nice guy! We were in the front row and he actually went back on stage to fetch a drum stick for my wife.

He cringed when I gave him a firm handshake because he said he had hit his hand on his drum set during that performance. As big and strong as he is I could not believe anything I could do to him would cause him even the slightest pain.

A few short months after this meeting he lost his daughter which hit us hard because we had a girl about the same age. I can't imagine the pain his family went through.

My prayers are being sent up for a truely first class guy.
