Part of a tribute, I don't mind. It's like some wizened old auntie one would otherwise prefer to avoid saying a few words at a funeral: I can suffer it as she is a part of the story. But if she's the sole act involved, that's going to be a real downer, I think. She's a best an average singer, with no other musical talents to speak of, so hearing her trying to carry off Prince's music without assists from those who are more in tune with his talent will be pretty annoying. And if it's going to be her 'emoting' her way through Purple Rain, I think I'll spend the evening on the phone, hearing Auntie Vera moan about her bunions. [Edited 5/21/16 14:32pm] Exactly, part of the tribute I could deal with, but the sole act?! "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

Sad for Madonna my ass. Billboard organizers recently said that SHE was the one who contacted them saying she wanted to be the one to do the tribute (not surprised since she loves attention). So whatever pressure she has is on her since she was the one begging to do this.
She'll make this all about her just like she made her speech at the VMA's after MJ died all about her.
Perhaps she was upset that Lady Gaga made the tribute to David Bowie when she wanted to do it. So now she gets the opportunity to make a tribute to Prince. Love is God,

She has never had anymore talent than brittany spears Pop music is garbage for 6 year olds ... Prince was special in the pop sphere ... But only because he made the white boys money ... Not because his music was good Thats why they don't bother with a respectable tribute ... They really could not give a shit about the music or the man He definitely made "the white boy" money as you put it! I beg to differ that his music was not good other wise it would not have sold! I don't think you sell around a 100 Million records Worldwide and your music be no good!!! [Edited 5/21/16 9:07am] I agree .. my point is that those running the show don't listen to prince ... They just know he made them some money so they will do what they can to exploit his death and make more money ... That is why the tribute did not show respect for the music or the man

Man, that tribute sucked. Big time. Really, really sucked. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Funny, when P asked her to help him get his masters from Warners the bitch didn't respond, now she cares! Bottom line is she is no more relevent as Sheila, Chaka or anyone else that had anything to do with P. Should of been quita few ppl up there, not just Madonna!

Lol, I do not know who this Linda is. I have to google her name. She said Sheila is not relevant because she is Obviously Envious and Jealous. Sheila E never stopped performing and she will continue to perform for many more years!

Isn´t she that Four Non-Blondes chick? They had what? One hit? But I think she´s a pretty successful songwriter and wrote some hits for other people. But I agree with you. She´s the last person to decide who is relevant and who is not. I´m not a Madonna hater and think it does make a bit of sense that they let her do the tribute but ....how relevant is Madonna today? They should´ve included more people who have worked with Prince and everybody would be happy now. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I do not think that they gave Madonna enough time to perform. And the tribute should have started the show. Not at the ending of the show!

GTFOH Who do you consider the average person? Today's youth? Of course that would be the case but if you consider people who went to college in the 80's like myself you damn well betcha a lot of blacks and whites alike know who Chaka Khan is. Chaka's biggest crossover hit was the Prince cover I Feel For You, Through the Fire received airplay on pop radio and I'm quite sure a few of her songs with Rufus had crossover success. Sure Madonna is bigger but bigger doesn't always mean better and I'm speaking for purposes of the tribute. Sorry Madonna is great for her audience but you've got to be tone deaf if you think Madonna is half the singer Chaka Khan is. It's no contest. I don't know or care what reason she was chosen but I just don't by the popularity bullshit because she's an 80's - 90's legacy act just like Chaka is a 70's - 90's legacy act. If popularity was such a big deal them why didn't they have Macklemore, Pitbull, Rihanna, Beyonce, or Madonna herself hosting instead of Ludicrous or Ciara. A white student in high school or college today probably doesn't care anymore about Madonna music than they would Chaka Khan. Either way they would consider it mom or dad's music. My neighbors across the street have kids(white) and they listen to more rap than I do and I'm black. I don't even listen to current hip hop but they do.

What I don't understand is.....why do some of you get so worked up over a tribute performance? No musical tribute performance is gonna bring Prince back. It's not that serious.I'm a Madonna fan and I'm a Stevie Wonder fan and I enjoyed the tribute. But really,it's not that big a deal to me.This is an election year.We got more important stuff to get worked up about, lol.

True that But I have the same thought process that folks shouldn't let politics control their lives to the point of lunacy. Supposedly the quote unquote liberal media is always at fault. Music and sports are generally 2 things that bring people together. Don't laugh at my funk

MEMO: For some fans, Prince is a demigod. And the fans wants their demigod to be honored and tributed the right way.

she's written loads of top ten hits. loads. i don't like her music myself, but i think it's dead unfair the way the internet has decended upon her for a quote taken out of context. she was trying to explain billboard's way of thinking. that they want to use an artist that is relevant to today's youth, and she is frankly right and it is a totally innocuous comment. if sheila e isn't known (people are too fixated on that word 'relevant') to the kids of today-- and she isn't-- that says nothing about the quality of her work or her awesome legacy. it just means kids are into new stuff, as always. it's just the nature of the beast, unfortunately. (for the record i don't think madonna is that much more relevant but it does make sense from a marketing standpoint) if you have a problem with the reasoning, take it up with billboard. don'y shoot the messenger. the scorn thrown at linda perry for literally nothing kinda makes my skin crawl, because what's to stop it happening to any of us? the internet lynch mob only needs to take one thing from its original context and make it look bad enough to get people riled up for the five seconds it takes them to type out an irrational hate screed on your facebook and spam it a thousand times using a macro.
the internet acting without thinking and engaging in self-righteous mob "justice'..? hmm... imagine that...
