Sheila E...I feel some kind of way

Ok hear me out...I just feel odd about Sheila E. Doing so many media things so fast after his death. Like she has appointed herself spokesperson. And the constant reiteration that they were engaged...(?)...that he said "Marry me" during a performance. Is that really a proposal?

Something is just rubbing me the wrong way. Am I alone?

I always loved Sheila, but for some reason it felt like she got "out front" awfully quick.

I agree she has jumped out front and center but I like to think it's because she truly loves Prince and she's still trying to protect him and his legacy. Death has a funny way of healing old wounds and perhaps she's feeling guilty about something. I read an article today and it stated she's not getting anything financially out of all this and has already refused money. That to me says something positive about her.

Has she jumped out or is she the most charismatic person, who always catches media attention? In her charity she has used to speak for many people and in a bizarre way, Prince is her "protégée" now. Perhaps that is annoying some of us. Personally, I only see a grieving woman trying to be strong.

I trust Sheila alot more than I'd trust anyone else - she's got experience with the music business, Prince, his wishes, and the horrible vulture culture emrging. So yeah Team Sheila here.

Agreed about her making sure things are done correctly and trusting her. It was a little surprising, but for those reasons I'm fine with it.

I have always liked Sheila - I think she's a great musician and has always seemed to act with class & dignity.

That said, I did feel that something was a little off in the recent interviews with her. I appreciate that we all mourn in different ways so it could just be that.

However, on DrFunkenberry's recent tribute podcast he made a cryptic reference, "...have certain people that care for him, but at the same time it's a little bit of an act... I can't really name names... I think it would hurt you..." - I must admit, my first thought went to Sheila.

Not sure how I feel on this...I've always liked Sheila and would hate to think she was using this situation as some kind of platform for herself. Stuff happens when a person dies, often within a group of family and close friends, someone will step forward and take charge, and it's not always the person anyone would expect. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt at the moment.

For me it sure appears as if Sheila is utilizing the situation as a platform for her to establish a) she was Prince's true soulmate and b) she's gonna be the one in control.

Honestly her comment that said the recordings in the vault should not be released because if he had wanted to release them he already would have i found to be very arrogant and totally not in thought with the fans.As if she thinks he was "her" Prince and hers only.

There is going to be vault releases, it's inevitable. Keeping the focus on celebrating Prince's life right now, first of all, is fine. Second, keeping the vultures away from making quick cash grab releases of material as fast as they can, for me at least, is also fine. Prince himself stated many times that the material in the vault would eventually be released. I have to believe that Sheila's comments are at least in part meant to keep people focused on what Prince gave all of us before he passed and to make sure that the vault material is released the right way. The fact that his estate is being managed by a trust company should put everyone at ease, for now, at least. Lastly, who else was in Prince's life as closely and intimately as Sheila was for as long as she was? She certainly has a unique view on the man and how he lived. Again, it was surprising she stepped up so quickly, but it makes sense, and I'm personally OK with it. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I've always viewed Sheila as a strong, outspoken woman. Out of everybody, she has been associated with Prince the longest. They may have bumped heads and disagreed, but I bet you anything, she stood up to him and made her opinions known. Though she doesn't have any children (that we know of), she seems to have a mama-bear type of attitude. When there's a high profile death, I think families need a spokesperson and she should be it.

.

Let's not forget, 99% of us DID NOT know Prince at all. It's kind of ridiculous to speculate about how often he spoke to people and how he felt towards his friends and family.

.

Listen, I'm as huge a fan as anyone on this board. I was sick with grief for days, feeling like a family member died. Having said that, I think it's silly to assume that all the 80s crew should have be doing this or that and saying this or that. Unless he maintained a relationship with them, I don't understand it. I was soooo tight with my best friend in the early to mid 80s. Told her everything, spent all my time with her, etc. I haven't seen or spoken to her since graduation. I don't even know where she lives now or anything. Was my relationship with her any less important that Prince's with his early bandmates just because I wasn't creating brilliant music with her? Yet in the 25 years since I last saw her, I have never felt like I wanted to reach out to her or have her in my life when I've went through turmoil in life. People move on.

She isn't doing that at all. She was a true soul mate, so what?

Where did she say 'she's gonna be the one in control'? Control of what?

You are only hearing a tidbit of conversations that have happend 'off camera' The only thing she said was she would be in charge of bring the bands/musicians together to get some tribute show(s) going.

And Sheila E has always been 'protective' of Prince. That is why most of the time we've known her she rarely ever talked about her time with Prince outside of certain exciting periods. But she never went deep with details.

What she said about the Vault was just an emotional reaction, We gotta remember it was not even 2-3 days when she said this after he died, and she is in Minneapolis grieving

What are the so many media things that she has done so fast?

this other stuff about the engagement. When did she say this since the 21st of April?

Of course people are going to focus on people in Prince camp who are more popular in connection with Prince. They are not going to focus on most people from 1990-2015 outside of Mayte

A very good point. In my mind I sort of lump together people like Sheila, Eric, Wendy & Lisa, and Bobby etc and imagine them as retaining a close association with Prince throughout their lives, but of course in many cases this is not the case at all. I can think of only one friend from the 80's with whom I'm still in contact for eg. As you say, life moves on and people have their own stuff to focus on. Having said that, it's possible to still retain a great deal of love and respect for someone even when there have been differences in the past and so on. The tributes from band members have been touching - most have hinted at his more negative qualities but have been at pains to emphasise all his good points too. It comes across to me that most of them had the highest regard for him at the end of the day.

I don't think Sheila has been 'strong' when it came to Prince. She finally found her voice at the beginning of the Welcome 2 tours, when it came to Prince. That is why there was 'another' break and she finally talked about her relationship with Prince and those 80s times via her book. Prior to this she never would.

Also Prince has always stayed connected to Morris Day, Bobby Z, Dr Fink Mark Brown Wendy Melvoin Andre Cymone and Lisa Coleman. I don't know about Eric Leeds, but Alan Leeds as well and reconnect with Jill Jones, I don't know about Cat.

Morris Day Andre & Bobby Z are the people he's stayed connected to who knew him longest. Not to mention Lisa Coleman next. People who know Lisa & Wendy personally know that Prince regularly visits them at their studio. And Bobby Z he's stayed in touch him him and his wife throught the years.

But I definately agree, that she as well as many other can be great spokesmen for Prince right now.
And that just because people were associated with Prince at one time doesn't mean they still are.
From what it seems he has stayed in touch with many of them from the 80s period.

Sheila can have a seat, imo, just for being kooky. I'd trust W&L and FlyteTyme over her, to protect Prince's legacy.

I agree. It did not seem he was involved with any of the other former band members from the purple rain era, musically or closely on a personal basis, within the past 7 years other than Sheila E. I agree with her that his vault music should be protected, at least until we see how his siblings will handle it or choose someone they believe Prince would have trusted to handle his music. Regardless of how fans feel about it, we just have to wait and see.

It's still up.

It's basically a representative of Sheila, stating that there's no truth to the rumours that she's been warring with Tyka over controlling Prince's legacy.

So there's at least rumours that Sheila has been over-controlling.

He just needs to shut up. If I were him, I would feel like an idiot. He did this Podcast after the last PP party and was so insitent that TMZ was blowing everything out of proportion with the whole ATL-MSP flight.
