Beachy, Revelation will NOT leave my mind. I read in a thread here where people were talking about it back in December with it's release that Adore was the wedding song and Revelation, the vow renewal song. That's an interesting take. nod

i know right? it gets a major hold on you. and the wedding/renewal thing makes alot of sense. the first one is 'til the end of time' the second one beyond time.

Isn't it though? The acoustics and his voice almost take you to whole other place. It sounds to me like he's had a "revelation" and he is either waiting for his love to have hers. Again, he's got the sex mixed in with the spiritual (based on how the lyrics are written). I don't understand what he means at the end.

If Vanity met Prince in 1980 I am having a hard time placing it at the AMAs because the AMAs were on 18 Jan and the Vault says that in mid January Prince was performing in Denver and does not mention the AMAs at all (which it usually does). The AMAs take place in LA.

.

"Mid-January 1980 - Prince plays a one·off show at the Rainbow Music Hall, Denver. The gig was organised by Prince's management as a "warm-up" for his 1980 tour. After the concert, teenage girls surrounded a trailer that funcdoned as the dressing room for the band. They began pounding on it and a window broke. lt was a considerable effort for the band members to get from the dressing room to the car. Then a wild chase ensued as the band tried to shake the tnailing fans." (can you imagine? this is what Vanity was up against...)

.

On Jan 26 he tapes for Dick Clark's American Bandstand television show in Los Angeles. Unless she was in LA, it couldn't be here (but maybe she was in LA?) She was living in NY at the time I believe.

.

BUT if we follow the storyline in PR and some of the printed accounts that say they met in a club, perhaps it happened at this club in NYC where Prince had two gigs in February:

IS February 1980 First of two concerts at Bottom Line, New York.
16 February 1980 Second show at Bottom Line, New York.

.

from wiki

The Bottom Line was a music venue at 15 West 4th Street between Mercer Street and Greene Street in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City from 1973 to 2004. They presented major musical acts and premiered new talent. Bruce Springsteen played showcase gigs at the club and Lou Reed recorded the album Live: Take No Prisoners there. Harry Chapin held his 2000th concert at the Bottom Line in January 1981. It had 400 seats and a no smoking policy.

.

I also came across an interesting comment in his interview with Rolling Stone in 1985. He says that during the Dirty Mind era (summer 1980 til 1981) he had a crisis which included being in love with someone who didn't love him back. Some people think that refers to Patrice Rushen, a musician he was working with in MPLS. Could it refer to Vanity or Susan Moonsie? I think Moonsie clearly loved him though.

.

"What was the experience that changed you? I don't really want to get into it specifically. During the Dirty Mind period, I would go into fits of depression and get physically ill. I would have to call people to help me get out of it. I don't do that anymore.

What were you depressed about? A lot had to do with the band's situation, the fact that I couldn't make people in the band understand how great we could all be together if we all played our part. A lot also had to do with being in love with someone and not getting any love back. And there was the fact that I didn't talk much with my father and sister. Anyway, a lot of things happened in this two-day period, but I don't want to get into it right now."

Maybe the nightclub scenario in NY is a possibilty. Who said that they met at the AMAs? Was that Vanity or someone else? Maybe we should look at 1981 to see if that year fits better.

.

In one of those interviews Vanity did with Joan Rivers, she said she thought Prince was gay at first. When was the Dirty Mind period?

Hahn's book possessed say they met during the Controversy Tour in 1981 (p49)

:

"During the tour, plans shifted when Prince one evening at a club noticed an especially sexy young woman; she was copper -skinned, sultry, and had an overall appearance very much like Prince's own. "It's been said that when they met, they both stopped in their tracks, looking at each other, it was like seeing themselves, but of the opposite sex," said Alan Leeds. A scout was sent over to ask if she wanted to meet Prince, and she agreed."

Ronin's book says they met in Jan 1982 at a club:

"By this point, Prince had chosen his pal Susan Moonsie, wardrobe assistant Brenda Bennett, and Cavallo, Ruffalo & Fargnoli employee Jamie Shoop to be in his next side project, The Hookers. Then, at a club one night, he met twenty-two-year-old former model Denise Matthews.

Born in Ontario to Scottish and Eurasian parents, Matthews had modeled and—as “D.D. Winters”—appeared in the low budget Canadian slasher Terror Train, and Tanya’s Island. “I really did think Prince was gay when I first met him,” Matthews told author Liz Jones. But after they went out to dinner, she added, “I realized he was definitely not gay.”

For weeks after the meeting, he thought of her. He changed his plan for The Hookers: He’d create the group around her, he said. His plan for risqué themes and lingerie excited her. He said he wanted to call her “Vagina” (pronounced: “Va-GEE-na”)."

.

,

Matt Thorne says they met at a party during Controversy tour:

.

"Meeting a new woman often seems to inspire new bursts of creativity or changes in direction for Prince, and in a break during the Controversy tour he met Denise Matthews at a backstage party (an event he’d later dramatise in Purple Rain), renaming her Vanity and deciding to make her the front woman for his girl-group project."

I wonder where the AMA story with the "bathroom event" came from? So then we are looking at 1982 as being the year they met and Dirty Mind period was before that?

Steven Ivory book, of 1984:

.

"Vanity, a.k.a. D. D. Winters, had worked as a model in her native Ontario and even had a couple of B-movies under her belt—Terror Train and Tanya’s Island, a Robinson Crusoe-ish flick that has since been relegated to T.V. heaven—when she met Prince backstage after one of his concerts in 1981. She introduced herself as a songwriter, but Prince didn't hear that as much as he noticed her distinct looks—penetrating brown eyes, long, dark hair framing a classically beautiful face, and those legs."

,

Prince - A Pop Life by Dave Hill puts the meeting in 1981 at Prince's party after the AMAs:

.

"As for Rick James, well, he made it his business to denounce His Royal Badness at every possible opportunity for several years after. ‘Prince is a mentally disturbed young man,’ he opined briskly to Britain’s Blues And Soul. ‘He’s out to lunch. You can’t take his music seriously. He sings songs about oral sex and incest,’ as, by that time, he was. James was far from averse to a spot of grandstand erotica, but for him, it seems, Prince was just too much. Maybe the final insult added to James’s injury at the hands of the upstart support act concerned a young Canadian model called Denise Matthews, whose main claim to fame was a commercial for Pearl Drops tooth polish. Prince threw a party after the American Music Awards Show, a year or so after the tour, and Slick Rick brought Ms Matthews along. ‘The story goes that somehow or other Prince enticed her away from Rick,’ shrugs Dickerson; ‘and a few days later, there she was on the bus, on the road with us. One day she was Denise, and then she was Vanity, and suddenly she was a star.’"

I know I read an interview with Vanity where she says Prince gave her an ultimatum to come to MPLS after dating off and on. something like that.

.

It's possible they met in a club, then met again after the AMAs in Jan 1982. At some point they decided what the 'official' story would be, and just like their names and images, this would be enhanced to make a better story. That's how those things work. PR machines doctor the details all the time. Then the people involved have to go with it.

yes Prince opened for Rick James starting Feb 1980. (He had done "Prince" in 1979.) Dirty Mind was recorded summer 1980. released Oct. toured US in Fall (Dec 9, 80 in NYC) toured europe May 81.

.

Controversy was being written mid 81, released Oct, toured Nov to March 82.

Now that you say that, in a preaching video I watched a couple nights ago, Denise tells the congregation that she was born in Niagara Falls, Canada but Prince wanted everyone to believe she was from MPLS along with everyone else back then (when The Time, Vanity 6, and he were all together).

Maybe they met earlier, before 1982 (Dirty Mind time frame) and she did not return the love then but then did at the second meeting?

She must’ve seen something she liked, for real, cause from that night him & Vanity was an item."

nod Didn't she say in that excerpt you posted earlier, that after that moment he introduced her as his wife? I LOVE it... lol

.

So if 1980 is meeting year, then that puts her on the scene for the Dirty Mind period, no? If he referring to her in the 1985 interview, that he was so depressed about being in love, but that the person was not returning it, then the only reason I could think of is that she realized he had a harem going. That's a quick way to shut the love down.

People magazine 1984 interview:

.

"The illegitimate child of a black father and a white mother, Vanity had at first hoped that modeling would loft her out of her native Niagara Falls, Ontario. On her own at 16, she scratched for modeling assignments, made several low-budget movies (including Terror Train with then queen-of-the-Bs Jamie Lee Curtis) and finally turned up alone and despondent at the 1980 American Music Awards show in L.A. There she met Prince, who called her at 3 a.m. The couple dated for several months, and Prince, learning that she could sing, eventually invited her to Minneapolis to front a racy all-girl group he was forming.

"He wanted me to call myself Vagina. He said people would know me nationwide," she discloses with a smile. "I said, 'No kidding.' " They settled on Vanity, and Vanity 6, clad in scanty camisoles and singing tunes like Drive Me Wild and Nasty Girls, soon cracked the black Top 10."

.

if you compare the above with this article from Vibe 2003, they knew and dated for 2 years before she joined the Controversy tour then moved to MPLS because he gave her an ultimatum.

could be the harem, or that she was dating Adam Ant and/or Rick James and the jealousy got to him.

.

This is from her autobiography:

"MY FIRST MEETING WITH PRINCE....AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS

That's right, Morris Day went with them on their first date! This article lines up with the 1980 date. I'm going with it, even if she denies the "bathroom event"- which I think did occur. biggrin lol

Not sure how relevant this is. This is the promo for Rick James "Fire It Up" Tour 1980 with Prince as the support act.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9emUBq6RLM

Wikipedia says the tour ran from Nov 1979-April 1980 with Prince playing his 2nd album.

I'm going with, for now,

.

1980

they met in 1980 at the AMAs, (Prince must have flown to LA from Denver after his warmup gig) he sent his manager over to pimp her (take him to the bathroom), she demures but eventually he comes over and says come on, he takes his coat off and is starkers. When the press sees them together and asks who she is, he takes her hand and says "This is my wife..." He calls her at 3am. They go out on a double date with Morris Day (this is why he says 'Together again', he was there from the beginning almost literally).

Feb 1980

Prince opens for Rick James Fire it Up tour, they do not know each other before then, and they do not get along.

She's in LA/NY, he's in MPLS. She's dating Rick James and Adam Ant. He's hooking up with Susan Moonsie and Jill Jones. They are seeing each other sporadically because of his touring and home being in MPLS.

.

mid to late 1980

The crisis during Dirty Mind involving a girl who is not returning his love. He has some kind of spiritual epiphany..and this becomes the basis for his 3rd film (not sure he followed through, will have to take a look at GB)

.

1982

Rick is grooming her for his girl group. After the AMAs Prince hosts a party (this is when Prince refused Rick's mom an autograph so Rick pours cognac down his throat). Rick has an idea for a multiracial girl group called Mary Jane Girls and is grooming Vanity to front it. Prince steals both his idea and the leading lady, and gives her an ultimatum to come to MPLS. he said "if you love me, you'll come with me." She joins the Controversy tour for the rest of it, already called 'Vanity' until April and they work on material during the tour. She packs her stuff and moves to MPLS in April when the tour is over where they immediately start recording Vanity 6. She moves in with him at Kiowa Trail.

I agree that meeting in 1980 sounds like it's the most plausible. Plus I have a number of articles etc. since Prince's death and most of them cite the 1980 date. Vanity mentioned the ultimatum in that interview I posted that she did with Donny Simpson in 1985. She said something along the lines of "yeah he said that if you love me, you'll come with me" or move to Minneapolis - but she did talk about it. I think in the same interview she mentioned that they were dating on and off before-hand (living in different cities and Prince doing tours) etc. So again that would line up with your 1980 date, that they met and were attracted to each other and saw each other when they could, but then eventually Prince wanted her to join him more permanently.

nod Didn't she say in that excerpt you posted earlier, that after that moment he introduced her as his wife? I LOVE it... lol

.

So if 1980 is meeting year, then that puts her on the scene for the Dirty Mind period, no? If he referring to her in the 1985 interview, that he was so depressed about being in love, but that the person was not returning it, then the only reason I could think of is that she realized he had a harem going. That's a quick way to shut the love down.

[Edited 5/25/16 19:11pm]

could be the harem, or that she was dating Adam Ant and/or Rick James and the jealousy got to him.

.

This is from her autobiography:

"MY FIRST MEETING WITH PRINCE....AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS

"AND THERE STOOD A YOUNG MAN, AWAITING MY SMILE, WITH A SHORT FISHING LINE AND A VERY LARGE HOOK IN HIS HAND. AFTER HE EXECUTED AND I DIGESTED HIS MOST STRANGE, INTELLECTUALLY ARTICULATIVE, POETICALLY ASTOUNDING, VERBAL QUEST FOR COMMUNICATION, I YEILDED.I CAN'T PRETEND IT WAS NO SURPRISE WHAT TOOK PLACE WITHIN THE MORE THAN MINUTE MEETING WHICH HE CLEVERY CONFISCATED AND I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED.

"CAMERAS WERE HOVERING ABOUT, HONING IN, INTERROGATING FOR IMPRESSIVE SUBJECT MATERIAL. I, SOMEWHAT CONFUSED - MUCH LIKE THE GREAT FALL OF BABYLON - FROM THE SEMI-AUTOMATIC BOMBASTIC EXPLOSIAN OF QUESTIONS ON MY RIGHT, BUT I RECALL ONLY ONE THAT MATTERED? WHO IS THE LOVELY LADY PRINCE? WAS HE REALLY SPEAKING OF ME? GRABBING TIGHT MY HAND AND YANKING ME TO HIS SIDE HE REPLIED DEFIANTLY, "THIS IS MY WIFE.".........................."
