He recorded the songs for The Black Album between Sept 1986-Mar 1987 and did the last song When 2 R In Love in Oct 1987. This then went to be pressed for release as the album and he cancelled it on 1 Dec 1987. He took When 2 R In Love and put it into the Lovesexy Album which he recorded the rest of the songs for over Dec 1987-Jan 1988.

As for the name - it's known as The Black Album because it's a black sleeve. I don't know when they made that creative decision to do that. It's actually a very good album, it's really funky and the bootleg did very well.

When he refused to extend the Sign O' The Times Tour it was because he wanted to work on the new album and The Black Album is that album.

Right. She did wear black also with Johnny Carson. I saw that later. Probably this interview with Joan Rivers has nothing to do with it. I just saw that and thought it was interesting and maybe there was a connection being that it was 1986.

It looks like Revelation was new- from the HitNRun Phase 2 which released this past December. It's a new-ish song. I don't know when it was written. In looking at Wiki about HitNRun Phase 2 and the tracks list, one of them is called "Xtraloveable". It was called "Extraloveable" was originally written for Vanity 6 and demoed in 1982 before being scrapped. It was then re-recorded featuring a rap segment by Andy Allo and released in November 2011 exclusively for iTunes to promote Prince's Welcome 2 Canada tour. I thought this was interesting since it was from a long time ago- Vanity 6 era.

All I am saying re wearing black and black album is we don't have enough information and it seems unlikely he would have it named before he had written all the songs. IF he knew in 1986 that he was going to call it the Black Album, and had told Vanity, which we don't know if they were in contact, and this happened all before she recorded the interview with Joan Rivers, then its possible, but if he was in direct contact with her and told her about it why would she need to signal him on TV? I think signals happen when you do NOT have direct contact with someone and are pining for them. But that is just how I tend to read things, and its only my take.

It's like a complete mood shift because we know from the books about him he was in a very dark place in 1987. People were quitting they couldn't even stand to work for him. Then he shifts to this love song which is totally out of place on the Black album, then cancels the Black album and does Lovesexy which is very positive and spiritual. Why the mood shift? Maybe there are other reasons but it is right when Nikki and Vanity break up.

Oh I didn't know any of that. I haven't read any books on him. That's interesting. I'm more aware of the music as opposed to the background story. And The Black Albums great! But I'd agree the love song always seemed weird.

When he dedicated Adore to her, I could see it was really important. Then when I looked into it, it aligned with your timeline about Nikki - which is really unique because you have a 3rd party diary view that's inserted between Vanity and Prince so you're getting a view into something that would normally be private. Then when you layer all the song, album, tour info on top it all came together it pointed really clearly to her. Which was surprising.

I have to admit at the minute I'm thoroughly enjoying this aspect of Prince's work - the layers within layers of meaning, it's nearly like learning a language and it's not even fixed to the lyrics. It's the way the songs are constructed, the use of old material with new songs, the visual dimension, his costumes on stage etc. And now to realise that Vanity was corresponding back in the same way too! It's really quite extraordinary!

Through this thread I have discovered more of Prince's music. I'll admit, before this, I only knew his hits and songs that had heavy rotation on the radio. I am definitely digging his other music that I had never heard before. I bought Revelation, Adore, I Love You But I Don't Trust You Anymore, and couple of others that I had never heard of until coming here.

There has been NOTHING but love for Prince on this thread. It started out with discussion about the possibility that Denise's (aka Vanity) death was ONE of the contributing factors in his death since the timing was incredibly close. In the almost 40 pages, it has turned into a celebration of Prince, his music, and his undeniable love for Denise. Yes, he loved her and admitted it quite frankly in a concert. Oh but since you're a close acquaintaince, you should already know. We have been respectful of everyone's grieving process- this includes his two ex-wives and all the ladies he cared for.

1986 was way too early for V to have been with Nikki. They didn't hook up till 87-88, I don't think. Cause in Feb 88 was when I read about the engagement.
