I always thought of them as one half to a whole and even with his marriages and Sheila E. I always felt Vanity was The One. Thanks to those in this thread who put it all together in a neat timeline. I am not belittling the marriages but marriage is not about twinsouls-

I LOVE that ^ pic. I posted it earlier in this thread. She just looked so happy with him. They did dress alike often, it appears. BTW, I posted in the Associated Artists thread that GeniusLuv started. [Edited 5/22/16 18:04pm]

Yuup its a pic that needs to be reposted I just wish there were more from this event, and more candid pics of them together I found this brillant site that is devoted to Prince's proteges and it looks like they are gonna do a blog devoted to Vanity/Denise http://prince-taught-me.tumblr.com/ [Edited 5/22/16 18:08pm] [Edited 5/22/16 18:10pm] Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

There's another pic of them from the Grammys that night that is in color. Question is-are there any pics of them in the audience that night? Did Prince present an award? are there any more pics.? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

for that site and I want in! I think it's hard to find pics from the 80's on the net. I think if people have old magazines, I bet there's more somewhere.

That is what I would like to know too, these days every pic at the Grammy is documented, its more diffcult to find pics from back in the day Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

That pic is somewhere on these forums in color. I just can't find the thread. Actually it is a set of three but it's the same scene and in the other two, you can't really see Denise's face.

I also wish there were more pics like this

Me too! I bet there are somewhere. I wonder who took this picture? Beachy mentioned earlier that when Denise OD'd in 1994, that she had a storage and many of her items/belongings were auctioned off. That's where we got the diary. I bet there were other treasures and pictures in there. Perhaps Prince had some too, maybe in the vault?

And the second Vanity 6 album IMO Vanity 6 Sex Shooter is better than Apollonia 6 version (but I prefer their version of Manic Monday to The Bangles) [Edited 5/22/16 19:39pm] Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

YES! I have to go listen to their Manic Monday version. Here is a clip of a newspaper article from the 80's. I found it on an old thread here. I surmise that it was not too long after she left him. Anyway, it's kind of interesting. Too bad it's just the first page!

hey this is the article I was trying to find that mentioned the 'legal wrangle' over Purple Rain. The one Apolloniia referred to where she came back a year later and wanted money.

Vanity said in one of the books I read that when she met Prince he asked her to switch jackets. She did, and their clothes fit each other. She took that as a sign. . And you showed the parade outfit she wore that mirrored his. . And I am starting to pick up on other things too. She wore this big black gorilla coat in mid80s.. I believe Prince was wearing a huge white animal coat for SOTT tour. . Today I was looking at her albums. There is a video of her performing Samuelle live, where she is in white lace but is framed by a purple window, then there are dancers in purple and purple lighting. at the end the male dancer who is knocking at her door is seduced away by another female. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahl7qG8f-Pc . Even more interesting is take a look at her cover design for her second album Skin on Skin in 1986, the same year Prince comes out with Under the Cherry Moon, which is filmed in black and white with a 30s Parisian theme. In particular the older woman played by Francesca Annis is wearing a similar outfit to her on her cover. . This article caught my eye today, everyone giving their opinions why Vanity left Purple Rain. But this quote stood out.
MAGNOLI When I met Vanity, I was at [nightclub] First Avenue, in the mezzanine area. Before anyone even said a word, I felt a quickening in the air. Within seconds, people started buzzing, “Vanity’s here, Vanity’s here.” I saw her coming through, one of the most beautiful women you could ever lay your eyes on, packed into latex or whatever second skin, looking exquisite.

She talks about the gorilla coat in the interview with Donnie Simpson and then she shows up on the David Letterman show wearing this black bustier type top and grey mini skirt. Well the top of the bustier has this black fur and David asks her about it. She tells him it's gorilla fir and then starts talking about the 100 year old gorilla fir coat she has- must be the same one she talks about with Donnie Simpson. . Nice catch on the video! That song is SOOOOO about Prince- "the prince and the showgirl" line gives it away! That bridal-gown dress she wore when she went on the late show with Joan Rivers. Yes I saw the purple window but isn't there a mirror? . When I saw the picture of Denise/Vanity, I immediately thought how very similar to the setting of UTCM.

Prince mentioned the 2nd Vanity album recently, said it was in his vault, and talked about releasing it someday. This is from the 2014 Rolling Stone interview that they didn't publish until April 22 this year.
"Are there full unreleased albums? Yeah, I like time capsule stuff. I have a couple . Do you want this to happen when you're gone? No, I don't think about gone. I just think about in the future when I don't want to speak in real time."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
She's actually wearing the coat in the Donnie Simpson video I saw, she takes it off and shows the vampire collar. It is super Goth. Prince wears a white fur coat in the same era, I don't know what the fur is from. There's a pic of him wearing it over his black parade pants with the buttons down the side. . Samuelle has got to be about Prince, and the third party has got to be Susannah, I guess. It's a wistful song and it reminds me of Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush where she talks to Heathcliff. . There has got to be some kind of back and forth messaging going on with this clothes deal. Even if its just subliminal signals. The 30s theme and the parade outfit is pretty obvious IMO.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That's right! I saw it a couple of weeks ago. She does take it off to show Donnie. I agree there is something subliminal about the clothes. The trenchcoat he's wearing in the Parade cover looks like the one she wore in her in many of the performances in Vanity 6. It's got to be the same one- short in the front and long in the back. . The songs between the two are direct language. Right after "the prince and the showgirl" line she says, "wonders if never, ever". Almost at the end she says, "Time will tell..all those nights I sat up alone and stared at the phone..well I'm calling my shadow, calling Samuelle...". There it is, her shadow.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah I noticed the 'shadow' bit, and its true, he was always just slightly behind her. The big movements were always made by her first, including her death. . Another thing is, her cover for Skin on Skin shows her holding a mirror. . I wonder if there is any reason for choosing the name 'Samuelle'? ending with the feminine elle rather than the masculine Samuel.
. That's right she is wearing a man's tuxedo (tails) in her performances over the camisole. Is that what you mean? [Edited 5/22/16 21:30pm]

I think the trench coat he is wearing in Parade IS the same one she wore over the camisole in many of the Vanity 6 performances. . I didn't notice the mirror in her hand! I can't make out what the guy is doing to her or putting on her. . The gorilla thing is definitely about Prince because in Purple Rain, Apollonia calls Prince "King Kong". I think that is the nickname Vanity have him and was scripted into the movie by her (although she didn't play it). . "Samuelle"is a strange spelling and does seem feminine. Is there a gorilla named "Samuelle" somewhere? [Edited 5/22/16 21:41pm]

On her album cover the guy is lighting her cigarette. yep the gorilla is aboutt Prince but I think she called her father that too and she was in a movie with a gorilla called Tanya's Island. The gorilla falls in love with her and she loves him. Here's a synopsis and trailer of the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPAiPqorsIc

^ In that pic, they are matching too. It's a little hard to make out. But the buttons on her jacket, look the ones on his. . I think I remeber her mentioning in an interview or one of her preaching videos about calling her dad gorilla. I think though her her gorilla fir coat is some sort of message to Prince. . Tanya's island looks and sounds funny! Lots of nudity and plot is a little odd. She looks really young, pre-Prince? [Edited 5/22/16 22:23pm]

Tanya's Island along with some of her other films eg. The Last Dragon, Never Too Young to Die, Deadly Illusion and Terror Train is on YT. Unfortunatety I haven't come across Lady Boss .
And with that pic being in colour Vanity's outfit is identical to Prince's (only difference is that she is not wearing a white frilly shirt). Great find

Prince and Vanity attended the 1983 Grammy awards which were held in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium. That was the year that Toto won everything for the song Rosanna. On a side note, a few pages back in this thread someone was talking about the song Indifference possibly being about Vanity. I don't think it's about her. My opinion on Indifference is that it is a song about him taking control over his life from the people that seek to do him harm. Those people or forces come in different forms. He talks about someone coming as Mother Teresa but acting like a whore. He talks about a nightmare running in place while your puppeteers give chase, that could be people in the industry possibly, but I think the general theme is someone who has two-faces. This would definitely not be about Vanity/Denise. The Vanity songs are more storytelling like Adore or they have a strong emotion like Something in the Water. The later songs about Vanity also have a throwback to a previous song that he wrote. Like Lion of Judah where he references Adore (still I adore u). Or one of my favorites Chelsea Rodgers which has an interesting take on Little Red Corvette. He says the line in LRC girl you got an a... like I've never seen. Well in Chelsea Rodgers he says you still got butt like a letter C. Meaning even though you're older and deeply in your faith, Prince being Prince is still checking out the booty. LOL In LRC he describes her as fast and needed him to tame her. Well in Chelsea Rodgers he is admiring her spiritually. He talks about how she poured out her tears to save he soul. He admires the knowledge that she has gained (Chelsea read more books that a few), he references her celibacy (try to catch her if you can, you never see her with one man). Remember in LRC he talked about the pictures of the other jockeys making him ill because there was so many. In this song he admires how she now cherishes her body and will not be with a man unless he is baptized according to the master plan. This song was written around the time when Prince was embracing celibacy himself so I definitely think she was his motivation to become celibate. The other great line in the song is when he says go head Chelsea teach me. That is the ultimate compliment because now the mentor is asking the protege to teach him.

I think it was Beachy and I looking at the lyrics to Indifference but it didn't make sense for it to be about Vanity because of the time period (too new). Your theory makes sense. . Chelsea Rodgers does match her conversion and his thoughts about it. I think him talking about her butt being the size of "a leather seat"again (like in Wonderful Ass) gives it away for me. In LRC, acknowleges all the jocks that were there before him and in songs after their break-up he sings about the "others" (men she had going). Then in Chelsea Rodgers, "you never see her with my man" (celibacy). Then he says, "a brother has to jump in the water" (meaning she wants him to become Christian). Nice observation! It's interesting for sure. . In the Melbourne tribute he sings a song by Bob Marley- Waiting in Vain (for your love). In her Facebook, before her death, she goes into this long thing about Bob Marley. I wonder about that. Maybe they talked about Bob Marley before she died? .
