I'm so sorry but, Prince is right. He owns it. End of story.
Just because someone is wealthy doesnt mean they have to give what they created away...I don't understand the logic there, they were employed by Prince, its like Apple, you get paid for your creative input into Apple products because Apple is paying your azz. They didn't 'help' Prince, they worked for Prince. Just because you are friends doesn't change that dynamic.

I dont understand the logic of a guy who is nearly 60 now, blocking something as insignificant as a name to a band he has no interest in doing anything with himself. Just let Jellybean and the rest use the bands' name (be it "The Family" or "The Time"), and make a lil' money without the legal hassle of changing the frickin' name. It's only a name man, why block it. Does Prince still think those trademarked names are really worth anything of any major value? (particually "The Family").
It doesn't affect Prince at all really, yet he continues to be a dick about something so pointless.
Prince treats his ex-associates as well as his fans it seeems.
If they are from the 1978-1988 period
For Prince to do some stuff with the Family & the Time would generate some much needed excitement
What CAN be done is that Fdeluxe can come out with an CD called THE FAMILY. It can say THE FAMILY boldly on the front and side of the CD packaging. They can even make a song (probably an instrumental) called THE FAMILY or THE FAMILY JAMS.
It wouldn't be tough to do that.
The Jackson 5 lost their ability to call themselves that, so when they came out with the Victory album, they called themselves THE JACKSONS but the final S in JacksonS was shaped like a 5. It got around the legal aspects of it, and yet paid homage to to the band.
Morris should just come out with an album called IT IS THE TIME.
There are ways around it.
The Monkees pay a fee every time they use the Monkees logo or name on their albums, tours. They pay it because it is worth it. The Family may not be able to do that, so find a way around it.
In fact Paul or Susannah at the time said that when P sent them a C&D about the band's name they decided to name the album The Family instead, and then they got another C&D so no
However the live Morris Day (and The Time) album from 2004 is titled It's About Time, so maybe fDeluxe should call their next album It's About Family

I think that's the heart of the matter. I haven't heard that MD album but by all accounts I heard its poor quality. By allowing the name to be freely used, there could have been several Time or Family albums by now which would not be up to the standard of the original releases. It doesn't matter what you call yourselves if you have a following there will be support and sales. There's a reason why Prince can sell out an arena in 1 hour or a medium venue in 10 minutes at high prices versus FDeluxe who has to send out emails to garner support. Everybody had their time in the spotlight in the 80's under the Purple Era. Jesse, Jam and Lewis have done their own thing with their successes and seem less fazed about the whole thing.

The Monkees are a popular group, known in many countries. Prince's Family are obscure and has one song that hit the R&B top 10 (Screams Of Passion). Some people think Sinead O'Connor did the original version of Nothing Compares 2 U. Kirk Franklin's Family is more well known than the other one, at least to gospel listeners. The Monkees make a lot of money and Rhino is always reissuing their albums every 2 or 3 years. The TV show is about to be released as a blu-ray in January 2016 in a restored version. Restoring film/video is expensive and takes a lot of time, and there's close to 60 episodes. So they know there's an audience who will buy it. The Monkees also tour in some form just about every year and has run a convention for the last few years. The Family can't do that.
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

HA! Prince has releases several Prince albums that are not up to the standard of the original releases and you aren't complaining about those.
Do you know that "Mr. Brown" from the Madea movies was a member of The Family? You can see him and Tamela Mann in the back
I hear ya', but I don't Kirk Franklin owns the trademark on the name as far as I can tell. Prince does own 'The Time' name. Prince trademarked 'The Family' but his claim has since expired. Prince is currently in the process of trademarking Vanity 6 so he can tour and release outtakes totally cockblock that name too.

Yeah but they are his-- which is pretty much what all this is about 🤑
30 years later, the grown men want to go back to their high school, put on their letterman jackets, but get upset because the school won't let them play in the next football game. Grown men always want to re-live whatever glory years they had when they had a full head of hair.
Besides coming off as ungrateful, it looks really sad. Arrested development is only funny as a TV show.

That live album was terrible indeed because of poor editing. Morris has released 3 brilliant solo albums in 85-93, though. As for fDeluxe they clearly said they don't make money with this project, it's just for fun and us fans, and their first album (I haven't heard the others) was really great, so was Condensate overall.
I don't believe it's a matter of damaging the legacy, Prince does respect those people as musicians. I think it's a matter of of securing ownership of the masters. If Prince can legally prevent them from using the name he can claim The Time and The Family to be his own pet projects, if they become "real" bands under those names then they can possibly say "the masters are ours" or WB can say "the masters are not more yours than theirs" and P may lose them in court eventually. Just a personal theory though.
His "i write and record the songs, you don't get a say, just be grateful i'm making you famous " position was always untenable, both in 1982 and in 2015. It was the reality though.

Excellent points.
So many variations of older groups now it's confusing to everybody. Even backup singers are trying to claim rights because they were in the group. You never k ow what people will do When they are trying to make a dollar

has nothing to do with what Jellybean is talking about
He isn't talking about going back, they clearly are doing something right now, paying homage and respect to Prince and the Family music.
I'm not sure what part of Bean answering questions that were asked of him people are not getting?
Again, it's not like he's posting rants on the internet all willy nilly...he is answering the questions that are being asked from his perspective which he has every right to do regardless of whether we agree or not.
He was there....people on this thread were not. It's entirely possible that he has a more informed opinion on the matter.
Finally, I don't see Bean as unsuccessful. He is explaining past events that he was asked about.
Yeah some of them are just plain childish when it comes to their musical idol.
You would think that Prince is cutting them a check for arguing on his behalf. It's not
even that damn serious. I'm a Prince fan too but his shit stinks just like everyone else.
He isn't the Pope. Anytime a conversation comes up about Morris, The Time,
Jesse, Sheila E., The Family people here have to make a declaration about Prince involvement.
Get a life.
