Whatever happened to the Judith Hill album?

Sometimes I'm really slow. I only just heared Judiths album and I'm loving it! I think it's one of Prince's best side projects ever! But...is this album really going to float around on the net without anybody knowing about it? I'm sure this would be a hit with anyone who likes old school soul and blues and funk. It deserves to be out there on that big black round vinyl thing! Don't let this album die!

I'm not so much into it but I totally agree.

Might be that trial that was put against Judith and Prince saying that she was under contract with someone else that has blocked the project from seeing proper release.

Or just Prince having moved on, as usual rolleyes

Yes it could be either one of those things. Probably the latter because I'm sure lawyers could work something out about that contract. Prince records so much that good records get overlooked sometimes and that's a shame. sad

Tho more control Prince has over his career, the less anything makes sense.

Prince is facing ‘poaching’ lawsuit over Judith Hill’s debut album

  • March 29, 2015
  • By Melissa Turtinen

Prince is facing a lawsuit over “poaching” a former contestant on NBC’s hit singing show “The Voice.”

Jolene Cherry, the owner of the production company behind Judith Hill’sdebut album “Back In Time,” filed a complaint against Prince Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The suit alleges the Minnesota native pursued Hill, despite her exclusive recording contract with Sony via The Cherry Project, and then damaged prospects for the album by releasing it as a free digital download via Live Nation’s mailing list, the Hollywood Reporter says.

Cherry claims she rejected Hill’s request to record and release an album with Prince because it would violate the recording agreement, but the suit alleges that Hill and Prince, who “boldly and inexplicably ignored these warnings” and the law, proceeded with the album anyway, and then released it as a free download, Courthouse News notes.

The lawsuit says:

“Judith Hill’s first album — ‘Back in Time’ — is now out, but rather than cheering along with her, the people who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop her career and album and worked to position Hill for her first release (as well as those who co-wrote many of the songs) are sitting dumb-founded on the sidelines while Prince gives away their investment for free.”

Cherry is suing for unspecified compensation and punitive damages from Prince, according to Rolling Stone, for making “it economically unfeasible for [The Cherry Party] to ever release Hill’s ‘first album’ or their recordings of songs … which Hill had already recorded for The Cherry Party,” the complaint says.

Hill is not named as a defendant in Cherry’s lawsuit. However, Hill filed a lawsuit against Cherry last week in New York that paints a different picture of what happened, Courthouse News reports. That lawsuit claims after Hill signed the record deal, Sony cut ties with The Cherry Project because Cherry was “incompetent.”

The lawsuit also alleges Cherry had planted a story that Hill dedicated a love song to North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Un, the Hollywood Reporter notes.

Hill’s lawsuit alleges defamation, fraud and breach of contract, The Wrap says.

Yes, all of that happened half a year ago. Did anything happen after that? Prince may have moved on already because for him, it's just another album that he did. But for Judith... She's like Carmen and Bria and Tamar and she really doesn't deserve that. Somebody should rescue this album!

Judith signed with Imagem US in July. I'm not sure what that means for this album, but I agree that it is a great listen. I saw here perfrom a couple times at Paisley Park this year and it was awesome.

I said this months ago....

If Judith wants to have a long career and a level of success, she shouldn't get involved in the Prince camp lol He may be a musical genuis, but look what happens with albums that he is associated with these days.......Bria,Tamar,Andy,3rdEyeGirl.....the album either gets released and flops,or it gets "lost" and never heard by anybody.

Prince feeds these young artists lots of "advice" and negative talk about record companies, but some of these ladies won't get anywhere without a major record company behind them.

YES good question, this is actually very good and it's nice to hear Prince doing FUNK again...this deserves a wider release.

In fact if he did another version of this just with his vocals it would be a Prince album we'd be proud of.

Makes me think it's still not too late for an official, digital release of Milk & Honey.

Or at least putting it on Tidal?

^ I wouldn't be so sure, maybe not the lyrics but musically you can be pretty sure he took charge based on his track record.

redflag

Hill tweeted a cryptic tweet about a month ago declaring her freedom, so maybe things are settled and she's shopping a deal.

Also Imagem US is a music publisher, not a record label.

I guess you missed that Judith went to Prince for help with this project and that she is in litigation. Nothing wrong with Prince producing for other artist.

Prince was named in the suit too, according to media reports. Not for helping with the project, but for emailing a link to download it for free.

No,there's nothing wrong with Prince producing other artists.

BUT,if you're a new artist trying to make a name for yourself, working with Prince can actually hold you back.Look at the examples I listed above. How have these ladies benefitted from working with Prince? He convinces them to work 'outside the system' (the same system that helped him achieve superstardom) and their albums immediately flop and are quickly forgotten.

The last time Prince had success producing a female artist was with Sheila E. and that was back in the 80s (assisted by a major record company,I might add).

Judith is stuck in a contract with Mrs Cherry and who else but Prince was going to work with her? He does not have to kiss ass so he was able to help out. She could be sitting idle for years and it is s good cd.
