I am not a guitarist but to my ears Donna sounds a bit more skilled when it comes to technique, whereas Wendy probably contributed more in terms of inspiration and melodies and opening Prince up to new ideas.

Remember, Wendy was only 18 when she first played with the Revolution.

My personal preference is Wendy because I care more about the feel of a song than technical prowess.

I could listen to Revolution rehearsals for days, especially the early ones with Wendy, the ones they recorded at the Eden Prarie Warehouse. Some of those guitar and singing parts may sound sloppy but I can´t get enough of those rehearsals.

Wendy is definately not that 18 yr old anymore, I think she is technically more versed in different styles of guitar playing than Donna.

I've heard her play after 1986 throught their albums on live/studio stuff she's done with other people and with Prince during the 2005-2009 years.

.

I enjoy both of them though.
But for many different reasons Wendy get's my vote.

Of course I didn´t want to compare the Wendy Melvoin of today with Donna Grantis. I know that Wendy´s technical skill is lightyears ahead from the way she used to be in 1984 but both started playing with Prince when they were young ( though I think Wendy was much younger in comparison to Donna....how old was Donna when she started playing with Prince? I have no idea.)

I am absolutely aware that Wendy has progressed and developed a lot since those days. The question is, to me at least, who is or was better at the same age. I´d say Donna, but like you, musically I prefer Wendy.

from a 2004 Interview with Prince

Prince on Joni Mitchell

In an excellent article and interview in the Rocky Mountain News

“She plays acoustic guitar with me better than almost anyone. The opportunity came up and her name was the first to come to mind. I’m looking for things to juice me, too.”

WEN-DEEEEEE!" chant Pharrell and Madonna before Wendy Melvoin's funky breakdown kicks in on She's Not Me, the standout track from Madge's album.

I love Donna...she holds her own, but Wendy --- Wendy makes her own sound, thats the difference between GOOD and a MASTER...

There is nothing wrong with Donna, but Wendy brings the quality that cant be created without HER, and thats the bizness rt there smile
