Judith Hill's work with Prince - help or hurt by it?

I really enjoy Judith's album, "Back In Time". Her soulful singing (I think that's what Prince could see in her) and the music production quality have a depth that you don't hear often, at least not outside of Sly and Motown's finest. Finally, some real music!

However, do you think Prince's involvement will ultimately help or hurt Judith? She's talented in her own right. But will people just view her as another Prince protege and nothing more? Has Prince acted as a catalyst, bringing out the best in Judith and challenging her to improve (as any good producer would do)? Or, instead, is he's presence going to loom too large and color Judith's sound too closely to his own?

Thoughts?

I did not expect the album to be that good....really strong production and songs...

In my opinion the real talented proteges of Prince did benefit from him...

Like Sheila E, Andy Allo, the Time...

Now the question is whether she will have big success...for that she needs a hit song and the backing by a good record company...

I can imagine Beautiful life, cry cry cry or angel in the dark becoming hits...

I think help, for sure.
Not just for getting the attention of P's fan base, but surely she got a lot out of working that closely with him.
Only folks who could think of her as just another Prince protege would be a subset of Prince fans and unlikely to matter or make a difference to future success.

If Judith is smart, she won't allow herself to be thought of as "another Prince protege".If that's the perception that people have of her,she won't last long at all. We've seen what happened to the others (Tamar,Andy,Bria, etc).

It's wonderful that Prince produced a few tracks and is giving her some guidance, but she will need to make it on her own,out of the purple shadow,in order to be taken seriously.

Isn't it really a matter of marketing?

An instant shot of extra publicity and a new fan base that she may have otherwise never been exposed to. Nothing wrong with that. Its not like she's being managed by him or is being signed by him. She has her own people.

Change it one more time..
