Prince quietly killing as a producer

I sat down and played the albums from Andy Allo, Liv Warfield, and Judith Hill - then I thought back to even Bria Valente's record and it hit me: Prince has expanded and produced some of the best protege/associated artist releases since the early 80s purple heydey and Paisley Park Records. I wasnt impressed with any of these artists until I heard what Prince did with them.

I agree! All beautiful written and produced. In an understated manner. Music first.

The wooh is on the one!

the music is always great, but he picks people who are boring. even if they have some talent like liv and judith. i find they invariably have no artistic point of view, interesting take on the world or events that would make intersting or unique albums that reflect interesting unique people.

being able to not make unpleasent noise, doesnt make you an artist. being a singer is fine, but a whole album of you means you should have enough personality brains thoughts or SOMETHING that stands out.

I agree with this in an ideal world....but the way pop music has de-evolved in the auto-tune era it doesn't matter what brains, thoughts or consciousness one brings to music.....its what can be commodified sold then thrown away as quickly as possilble to make room for the next "product."

Thank goodness for the Erykah Badu's, Jill Scotts, Bjorks and others who have built careers as vocalists and artists/poets outside of the 2000s/2010s mindless pop machine!

I agree with both of your comments here. Bria's album had amazing songwriting, lyrics, production - yes, there were a few clunkers, but Immersion and Elixir are great. Same with Liv, Judith - some great songs. But I agree, they are not "personalities," or a "persona," "brand" that inspires loyal fans. Liv and Judith are good singers. Bria was a GF, I guess. So far, they do not seem to have an artistic p.o.v. They even dress in that bland way (probably dictated by Prince).

Disagree.
Most were bland and boring records.
I like Judith Hill but kind of think I am liking the tracks Prince didn't produce. At least from the sound of the ones I like...

he prefers women with zero personality. its such a flaw in him. his taste level on some things is ridiculously pedestrian....and its such a blazing waste of time lololol the only one who had any personality at all was sheila. thats why these projects are always lacking. he's trying to offload songs like the sale bin at target.....

I wouldn't call it a 'flaw', more of a 'safety procedure'. He chooses these women so that they A) don't override his persona and B) don't try to take control of what he wants them to do. It's part of why him and Mayte didn't work out, she is too strong willed.
