Who is your favorite protege group or artist? Whether its the Time, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, The Family, Mayte, Sheila E, Bria Valente, Jill Jones or someone else I haven't mentioned, I'm curious who is your favorite?
I think I'd have to go with Sheila E but man is this a hard choice to make.

For me it would be Sheila E. It could be because she has a lot more material than the others. TRUE BLUE

Wendy & Lisa
I still get an enormous amount of pleasure from their solo albums and their more recent soundtrack work.

Mavis Staples because she is an artist in her own right. All the others were just products created by Prince.

How is Mavis Staples a protege, when she was recording before Prince was born? Prince gave her a deal on the Paisley Park label, wrote songs for her. I think that counts. But I agree it's a bit dubious, because by this rationality, we could also include Larry Graham and George Clinton. Still, the fact that Mavis had an identity of her own, makes her two albums my favorite Paisley Park albums- together with Jill Jones.

By extension, Sheila E had a career as a musical talent before her time with Prince, so I guess we really do need to better define the term "protege".
Food for thought I suppose... A robin sings a masterpiece that lives and dies unheard...

She did. But most of us didn't know her until Prince put her out as a frontman with a band and wrote songs for her to perform. . Now I don't see Mavis Staples or Larry Graham as proteges. I don't think anyone that Prince gave a song or 2 to are proteges. Like Sheena Easton...

Slightly bias, The Time. Just saying. “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist.” Brazilian bishop Dom Hélder Câmara

I'm mad her planned '89 album was cancelled. I've been bumpin' Scarlet Pussy extended alot lately, glad it saw the light of day . Somebody come get this meow-meow off my leg . I almost shit when she popped up at the only Prince concert (only concert period actually ) I saw in 2010 . For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Definitely the Time, for the first two Time albums alone, they were better than Controversy. Sheila E is a close second, but I also really like the Vanity 6 album. . That is a surprisingly good record. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Whilst I genuinely love them all. If pushed I would have to say Ingrid Chavez. I think her album sounds fairly different for the usual Prince protege and her image is quite different. This may be due largely to the lack of heavy Prince involvement in the album which allowed Ingrid and Michael Koppleman to interestingly venture off into a new and different soundscape.
