Jill Jones Thoughts About Alan Leeds Critique Of Prince On SNL

Jill Jones' amazing statement about PRINCE in response to Alan Leeds' criticisms

I have no idea about Alan's post....but what i can say in my humble opinion and as we get on in years....there is a certain amount of freedom when one has the ability to "follow ones heart". Its immeasurable. To measure what makes someone else happy on an artistic level is cruel, shallow and subjective.

What I always admired about Prince, was his fortitude to listen to his inner voice and go for it. Let's be honest, not everyone was on his ship at the same time, nor did they always "get" his vision. He also has the tremendous ability to "sell his vision" to the naysayers, and has converted many ,if you will.

I have been guilty of judging his artistic choices in the past,as well, but have come to realize, that energy of yesterday and the person I knew is fluid....it moves and it evolves and my place is a very different one at present moment. If I choose to honor the essence and character of the person I knew and deem them to be innately today at their core, I somehow realize that Prince is doing what he has always done....he represents change and changeability. He always did. And what i do respect to paraphrase a quote by Pema Chodron, “Only to the extent that "he" exposes "himself" over and over to annihilation can that which is indestructible in "him" be found.”

Even through out his early "sexual years musically" there was a raw vulnerability that others identified within themselves. But that too was a form of self annihilation. A craving for the yesterdays, says more about the public, rather than him. One could consider that musically the sexual exploration was rooted in a destructive force. A force that clashed with the time during that era. So out of that clash, the destructive force created "Something new" in everyone's minds.

Now here we are today, as he moves in other less ego based music. We should all be so brave and courageous. As far as ex band mates expected to "kiss butt or trash", we worked with a gifted soul, whose contribution to music has been expansive and boundless.....we were all mere vessels of a common energy. It was a fantastic experience that i have an immense amount of gratitude for.

We can't live in the past, we just cannot. So, that being said, I bow to the divine in him , you and everyone connected in this beautiful glorious spectrum. The one thing I would like to impart, to paraphrase Nabokov, "Whatever evolution this or that popular character has gone through between the book covers, his fate is fixed in our minds, and, similarly, we expect our friends to follow this or that logical and conventional pattern we have fixed for them. Thus X will never compose the immortal music that would clash with the second-rate symphonies he has accustomed us to. Y will never commit murder. Under no circumstances can Z ever betray us.

We have it all arranged in our minds, and the less often we see a particular person, the more satisfying it is to check how obediently he conforms to our notion of him every time we hear of him. Any deviation in the fates we have ordained would strike us as not only anomalous but unethical." I will leave you with, all I can say about him is that Music is the foundation of his house and his performances are the perfume in the air that surrounds him. Namaste.

I certainly did not expect that kind of response from her. I'm glad she's moved on and has evolved.

Looks like Jill is really embracing her spirituality these days... smile

Cool. One less excuse for Prince to act an ass about a Purple Rain reunion. Now we just need Jesse to publicly apologize to The Time.

You're probably right. I just want it to be some kind of apology or something, but to be honest, I don't understand it. I can't read that without tuning out every couple of words. What was the point?

What a surprise. wink

"Very well written Jill". I totally enjoyed reading what she wrote about an amazing genius. Prince is and will always be about the music.

No, the point of all of it is Prince is playing the tired "Why Should I Do That When I Can Do This" game... again.

Noppe, she sayng what a lot folks say, he is a G and not scared to open himself up to ridicule and or anihilation of his art..While mf'ers constantly throw shade about what he could, would and should be doing, he keeps it moving on to the next. And far be it for another adult to tell another adult what they should be doing

Nah.. There was a time when that was the case. Now, I think, it's much more about bitterness and grudges.

A Jill Jones video was just posted on Prince's facebook page, so it seems Jill's sentiment was appreciated in the Prince camp.

She was very gracious and entirely RIGHT. Prince can HUM on SNL and tear the house down. Alan needs to stop being so crankypants. Its not a good look.

Wow, she has come full circle on her opinions of Prince and his music. It was less than 3 years ago that she expressed that it was sad that he was without any real family and he would stay up and do a show after a show. I wish I had the quote, it basically said music is his whole life, how sad.

Now I think she gets it that that is just his genius and the way of most geniuses. They have a deep love of whatever it is they are geniuses of and they can do it 12 or more hours a day year after year.

There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

We can't give up so early on hoping there will be a proper archives program in the near future and/or that Prince will at long last do something with his archives now that he got the masters for most of them back (I say most since it seems WB retained the Time, 6's and Sheila albums). Maybe if the whole PR remaster thing is a fiasco and everything goes down to hell by next year or 2016 we can believe it's hopeless, but right now the sky's still the limit nod
