What is it then? If anything you could argue that Prince is doing the improvisation using the band as his instrument.
I'm gonna surmise that you are not a musician. I am. Improvisation doesn't mean that everyone just takes off free form. Structures are put in place and musicians improvise around a form.
But really, I refuse to have this argument. What it's really about is is that fammy fans have a bug up their ass about The Revolution. Screw that. Everybody in that band brought soemthing to the table, and they were mosntrous as a unit. Prince was the bandleader, but that doesn't mean the band didn't have skills.
[Edited 11/15/14 12:47pm]
But the point is that the band doesn't do a lot of impro around the structure put in place. Prince improvises a great deal. The band not so much. The wooh is on the one! |

I refuse to have this argument. There are hours of tapes of the band improvising just like every other band that improvises. There's nothing lesser about their improvisational skills, and 3rd Eye Girl is certainly not doing music that is anywhere near as interesting. It's certainly not MORE improv based. If you think otherwise, you have an agenda. The evidence is there.

Overall that is because that's how Prince needed it for him to do his thing.
There are many off tour shows where they show easily they improvise well.
And overall I've always prefered renditions of the songs not a bunch of jamming for the sake of showing off skills.

funksterr said: Well, this is all my personal opinion, but I don't think Alan is wrong at all. His comments were spot on, but also completely unnecessary. Prince and 3EG are what they are, and Prince is never going to give any of us the type of music or experiences we've been imagining he might one day be open to. I realized that with NPGMusicClub. I said it again when they announced the Purple Rain outtakes. And throughout all the points when it appeared Prince might be produce new music with his protoges. It's never going to happen. Prince can't do it and still be "THE CRRREATEST LIVN' SOUL!/ THATULLEVERKNOWWWWWW!!!".
His current situation is the BEST he's going to deliver going forward. Eventually the young talents around Prince will mature some and the music will tighten up perhaps to a really high level. But Prince hates all of his old bandmembers and associates to such a degree, that if he never plays with them again, it will be too soon. Though he isn't going to actually tell them that. He pretends the door is open, but in general, he thinks he's smarter than them, richer than them, better than them, more right with God than them, etc. But frustration boils over from time to time.
They are beginning to catch on, and the best way I can describe it is that some are experiencing various parts of the 7 stages of grief over the situation, imo.
Prince blames them for negative fan reaction to his various projects and albums. He blames them for interviewing. He blames them for any and everything really. But... I think he's got it wrong. We want what we want. Prince keeps delivering a pizza with toppings nobody ordered. And then wondering why everybody is pissed. Sometimes he charges you for the pizza and NOTHING ever shows up. Sure sometimes we warm to the usual odd toppings, but 9 times out of 10, we are like, "Shit, dude, How hard is it?"
\
What the fuck are you going on about. You have no idea what Prince blames anyone for. You sound just as looney as Mr. Leeds. |

Why do you think that? I haven't heard him blame them for anything. In fact he doesn't really talk about them at all. There are however plenty of examples of them blaming him.
Prince has spoken to some of them and that's what he said in a nutshell.
Sound like B.S. to me. He almost never bring any of these people up in interviews but they continuely talk about him. |

Alan leeds doesn't sound bitter at all.He was just simply giving his opinion (which he's entitled to) Why is it that, fans are allowed to criticize/bash Prince all they want, but if an ex-associate does it,they're evil and they have an "agenda"? |

Alan Leeds (and any other ex-protege) can talk about Prince anytime they want.Who are you to control what they discuss? If you don't wanna read Alan's views, simply don't click on a thread where it's being discussed. He has just as much right to discuss Prince (whether it's good or bad) as you or anyone else on this site. |

Why can't fans criticize ex-associates if they disagree with them. |

You wrote one of the best liner notes in 1993. Your contributions over the years as I recall, them have always been even. Your comments, for many long time fans, have brought Prince down to the ground which has been very satisfying. That is why is was disappointing to read our latest comments. My first reaction was surprise as I did not expect cheap comments from you. My next thought was ou and Prince must of just had a falling out prompting those comments. To me, I think Prince is on an upswing- AOA has some first rAte material. The guy still sings and hits notes at his age that few can reach. He is still incredibly exciting when in full flight like when he and Donna traded solos at the end of their SNL set. While I agreed years ago when I read your comments about Prince not wanting to go out dressed in jeans and a t shirt - he came close to 'normal' in terms of dress in 1996 and I found I wished for the wild outfits again. This is a real and true artist. It's is the whole package and he is a pro. YOU should know this. There is a lot others can learn from- clean living, amazing worth ethic, amazing skill, seemingly infinite energy and single minded determination to do what he wants and how he wants.

Could it be, that mabye he's sick and tired of Purple Ran as I am and he wanted to try and do something different?
.
Please check the playlists of the concerts he did Summer 2014. At least half of PR has been a CONSTANT part of his cocnerts of the past ten years or so.
.
If he's so sick of it, how 'bout he played something else? LIKE ALL THAT NEW MUSIC HE IS ALWAYS YACKING ABOUT? © Bart Van Hemelen

My reply was in response to the statement about not doing anything about the Purple Rain 30th Anniversary this year and instead promoting AOA and Plectrum this year. But I'll admit 3121 was the last time he incorporated new music into his setlist. I would have like to see that with AOA but with no tour at all, well... oh well. |

He has not been princes tour manager for many, many, many, many, many years now. He is working with Deangelo and others. What is his problem?
And, are tour managers really needed by singers? What is the purpose of a tour manager? |

Not just him/ he, All Tour Managers in General! And I hope Mr. Alen stops talking negative about Prince. He should worry about whoever he is working with currently. Not people he worked with in the past. It's like he can't let go of the past. That is sad! |
