Lenny Kravitz Strut Just noticed that Lenny's new album is coming out on KOBALT. Does this mean that Lenny is finally "off the plantation" right when Prince is back on it? Yeah, that is strange.Prince's best opportunity to release as much as music as he wanted, keep his master recordings and publishing and not answer to corporate executives. I remember when Prince said that quote. He was being interviewed by Matt Lauer. I would to see Prince and Lenny collaborate on an album together, but I think even back then he wanted the muscle of a major. Why else sign to Arista and do business with an executive who symbolizes so many of the gripes Prince had with the industry?
I plan on buying Lenny's new album. From here on out. next time Prince complains about the industry, may lightning strike him and we all ignore him. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR | |

has kept working with majors for most of his post-WB career, even though he wasn't tied by exclusive contracts and retained his masters. - Emancipation: EMI - Crystal Ball was distributed in stores by BMG IIRC (even though O(+W handled manufacturing, hence no BMG logo on cover) - Newpower Soul, Come 2 My House and possibly also GCS 2000: BMG - Rave: Arista-BMG - Musicology: Sony - 3121 (and if released Milk & Honey): Universal - Planet Earth: Sony (in some territories only, other small labels handled some other territories) - Fallinlove2nite: Sony again. . I have no idea who distributed ONA Live, BTW. . There also have been numerous releases through independent labels, though record stores (Target) and magazines or straight-to-consumer via online stores and shows, but every time wanted something to be "big", he used a major. . Of course he'd say that he used them and kept his freedom, but if majors are "slave owners", it's a good ethical question whether one should contribute making them richer by making business with them, cashing on money they made using their "slaves" in the first place, or if one should boycott them entirely. I believe was inconsistant when it came to that. On the other hand even small labels, for the most part, own their artists' masters, so basically the only ethical option would have been to work exclusively with distributors and small labels who didn't own a single master recording. It could have been done but most likely all releases would have been much more confidential. Now things are changing with labels like Kobalt and Live Nation, who perfectly understood how appealing it was for major acts to remain sole proprietors of their recordings, but this business model was pretty uncommon until the mid-2000's.
