When I read the article I got the impression that Sheila was sort of "the other woman" in his life for a very long time. We know that he proposed to and lived with Susannah Melvoin, so at least in 85-86 Sheila wasn't his first choice.
Interesting that we're getting a confirmation on this now. Many of the older sources (bios etc.) insist that they were mostly friends or had just a very short relationship around the time of "Purple Rain". The article makes it seem there was so much more to it all the way up to 89-90.

I don't know if it's the way the article was written or if it's the book, but there are some timeline problems. The article says that by 1990 Sheila was in "a bad way," physically, from performing with Prince, and collapsed during the Sex Cymbal sessions. Then it says Prince's songs were getting too dirty for her and that on the next tour he refused to let her fly home for her grandma's funeral. There was no next tour post 1990. The Lovesexy tour ended in 1989 and that was it for Shelia in the Prince camp. He dubuted Michael Bland as his new drummer in the Partyman video later that year. There's some confusion on the part of someone.
actually Michael Blands debute was SNL Electric Chair/the Future
Yeah the way it reads is way off track timeline wise |

But still, compared to what he was singing in the early 80's when she met him, her comment makes little sense. [Edited 8/24/14 3:13am]
When she was with him 84-89 Prince didn't have that many songs that were predominantly about sex (there were some like "It" and "Scandalous", of course). Sometime around GB and DP the songs with sexual themes also became darker in tone and he started singing about his "techniques" and how good he was in bed. If you think about some of the songs from the early-90s like, "Insatiable", "The Continental", "Come", "18 & Over", "Pheromone" and "Shhh", it's hard to imagine the type of lyrics that those songs have on SOTT or Lovesexy.
There was of course The Black Album and it had been originally even something of a birthday gift to Sheila originally, but that one was filled with humour. The early-90s stuff was far more serious in tone. At one point it seemed that Prince was on a mission to satisfy every woman he met.
I agree, that period wasn't as sexed up as it's made to be.
If the music for her 4th album was the disagreement on her albums direction and it was more raunchier?
.
Also when she talks about how 'naked' she was during this period. I don't see it. Maybe not having dealt with her sexual abuse issues it affected her thought pattern more. But I just don't remember seeing Sheila E as naked as she is talking about. Especially in 1985/86 she was covered mostly. The 1 legged outfit was nothing, it's a thigh. So I don't get it. |

I thought the Partyman video came before the SNL performance. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide." |

Video was recorded in August. I'm pretty sure the video was out at around the same time as the single, if not earlier.

I recall Candy Dulfer saying in an interview how it was originally supposed to be a simple, low-key video, and then she arrived on the day of taping and there was this gigantic set full of people etc. © Bart Van Hemelen

I've read the book. Sheila writes of only three men in her life, including Carlos and the lengthy mostly platonic relationship with Prince. I'm left with the presumption that Sheila has been a lesbian or asexual most of her adult life. Nothing wrong with either of those identities but the book does come across as disingenuous when relating to her love life. |

I read the book, well skimmed through the book, stopping mostly for the Prince stories, but I can break down some highlights of what I read so far: Hmmm... My daddy took me in a closet and gave me cocaine and made me snort that shit in front of him... My titty popped out during a performance with Prince, but I didn't mind flashing the entire audience of strange men and what not.. Santana opened me up like a flower... Me and Prince really did fuk until the dawn... My band was funkier than The Revolution and Prince was threatened by that... I was an out of control, mean and nasty bitch with a serious sense of entitlement, until the checks stopped coming in... then I found Jeezus! ... Whitney Houston misunderstood me when she thought I wanted to have sex with her. Pretty much nothing in there so far that Per Nielsen didn't write about 20 years ago or so, but at least we get the stories in Sheila's voice. I think there is a lot missing. She seems to have gone out of her way to not say anything controversial about Prince, which is surprising because everyone has stories of Prince acting oddly or selfishly, but Sheila doesn't mention any of that. Then again I only skimmed through the book, so maybe I missed something. |
