I recently had the pleasure of meeting the woman who played Prince's mom in Purple Rain, Olga Karlatos.

I had a commision to make a short film about Arthur Rankin who recently passed away and I kept reading about his wife, "Olga Karlatos". I kept thinking "I know this name, I know this name", but never put two and two together and carried on with the project.

Anyway, so I went to her house and met her. She was very nice and gracious. I came home and was still thinking "who is this woman?" I did a google search and BOOM! There it was......I thought "How stupid of me to not remember such a thing!!??"

Went back a second time to film in the house and it was now weird for me but I kept my cool. She's a very nice lady, very calm and serene. Long story short, she's lived down the road from me for about 25 years!!!! She may even have been while doing Purple Rain. How crazy is that!?

I have to go back a third time and return a bunch of pictures and things. I haven't mentioned the fact that I'm a Prince fan. I wonder if I should??

yes metintion the fact.. tell her you appreciate her work in purple rain and try to get some insider info to share with the org.. cool

You can just tell her that you liked "Purple Rain", found out she was in it, and does she have any cool stories that those obssessed friends of yours on Prince.org would die to hear?

Soooooo....

I went back to her house to drop off the items I borrowed for the film and I had a total nerd moment. I told her I was a little star struck when I had learned who she was. She said she finds the fact that most people only mention her PR role as opposed to the other roles she's been in annoying.

Well anyway, she said that originally she didn't want to do the movie and so she refused but they (I presume the producers and Prince since it's always been said that he wanted her) pursued her more and offered her money she couldn't turn down. She also said that she filmed a lot of more than what ended up in the final film but was glad that so much of it didn't end up in the film. She was worried about all the cursing and the violent nature of Purple Rain and didn't want to be too closely associated with that part of it. I didn't ask her if she ever hears from Prince. I presume not since she has left Hollywood and is now a litigation lawyer.

She has invited me to a memorial for her husband in July because I made the short film on him. She's a really sweet woman.
