Jesse came into The Time from the outside. Morris, Bean, Monte, Terry & Jimmy all grew up togther. They were friends/bros since elementary school. Way too much history between them. * I don't think they fully excepted him. Did they always treat him more like a hired guitar player? * Jesse had chops and moved to MPLS to do his own thing. He just fell into The Time because he needed the work and he was good. It was a great gig to launch his own career, but the fame came to fast. Maybe, just maybe they were all looking out for each other, excluding Jesse from the benefits. * The heat between them may have started back then. Just sayin' * * [Edited 3/28/14 10:01am]

Jesse was also the only one in the group that had SOLO success as an artist in his own right...He also is the ONLY person that brought Sly Stone out of hiding with his hit song "Crazy 4 U ".... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I think you are kind of on to the problem. I can't prove it, but my best guess is Jesse really wants to produce a Time album. I think that desire is the crux of his problem with Flytetme and at times Prince. They are all egendary and among the elite writer and producers of all time. Jesse brings a lighter resume to the table, but he did generate the bulk of what became the Ice Cream Castles album from scratch. Prince and Morris reworked some of it, cleaned up other parts, added their own tracks, etc... the normal things that producers do. But I think Jesse kind of has a big head over the fact that these superstars liked his original material enough that they used it in to help form the final product. He isn't grateful to participate and play his role in the situation, he figures, he kind of got played because they didn't get out of his way and offer him the Captain's chair! So he's throwing rotten tomatos at Flytetyme and hoping Prince and Morris will call him to write new music. Only probelm there is that he wigged out against Prince for deleting his guitar solo off Jungle Love too right? He's uncomfortable with anybody else calling the shots, whether it's Prince or Flytetyme. Typical lead guitar player.

Word I got from a former Flyte Tyme staffer is that when the "PANDEMONIUM" album was being put together they would have meetings and in the meetings Jesse, Monte & Jellybean wouldn't say much - they weren't going to say much in front of Prince or Jam & Lewis. Now one could look at this several different ways. The strongest writers and most creative members out of the Time...Jesse, Jam & Lewis. But in 89/90...Prince along with Jam & Lewis had the most bankable success so in essence they (P, J&L) directed the project. Morris is gonna go along with the $. The vibe was given to Jesse, Bean & Monte to kinda just hush up and follow our direction. Top this off with Jesse contributing the tracks "Blonde & Skillet" and J&L added the lyrics that he really didn't dig...but he went along with it anyway.
That O7 album in my opinion was missing..at it's core.... the "MPLS Grease"....BASS,drums, keys ,guitar! It was waaayyyy to synth heavy. I'm a bass player so I'm biased but they didn't expand on what they do or what sound made them..."them"! I kinda can see what Jesse is saying..."We all are 50+" the subject matter has to mature....some.
All that being said. The Time of 81/82 have grown and matured. They aren't the same cats they used to be. So to expect them to be the same of have the same vibe is a set up 4 failure. They've grown..they've got families, more responsibilities, etc. Some have branched off and enjoyed certain levels of success. In spite of what road they have traveled they have a history. So they will always be bonded over what they did. Jam & Lewis are living well off of royalties. The others guys not so much. So touring 4 J&L I would guess was not so much a priority. Morris seems quite happy doing the quite easy "Morris Day & The Time" gigs w/Bean & Monte. So Jesse had to in essence look out for Jesse..especially if he got a call w/gigs lined up!

. Dude, most of The Time had some form of success. So many of these people were doing production work on hits etc. © Bart Van Hemelen

. Let's not forget that Pandemonium was basically the result on WB asking/demanding the original Time do an album while rejecting Corporate World. (IIRC -- because there are a kazillion contradicting stories about how this album came to be.) © Bart Van Hemelen

lol oh ok. . One thing I noticed and I know everyone else has as well, is that everyone doesn't want that kind of lead success. Some do an album just to do it, then find their place. Prince talked bout that too, but he said he didn't think Jesse was a frontman. Jimmy Jam & Terry did what they always did 'produce/create' music but never took the front. Even when they did a few performances with Janet they were always sidemen. Jellybean loved being on the drums Monte on the keys. And in everything they've done during and outside of the Time has been in those spots. . I think Prince should have always had them a part of the creative process, even if every song isn't the full band, maybe combinations of the band and always at least 3 songs full band. The Time could have went further and been a part of Paisley Park etc

U make a good point! But I'm always one that feel things suppose to happen like they happen. I never heard Prince say that Jesse wasn't a frontman. But if he did. He has a point. Prince not letting JJ & TL have more freedom is what led to them getting fired and ultimately becoming one of the most successful producing duos in muziq history. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"!
