jANELLE mONAE Last nite in Mpls Janelle threw the most liberating dance party I've been too since seeing the Royal Purple One rock the Twin Cities. The music was absurd, the crowd went crazy and it was so much fun to feel part of the 'Droid Rebel Alliance and Get Free Crew.' Janell's new Electric Lady CD has so much energy and right on lyrics that it comes as no surprise that she's associated with Prince. The whole concept of her albums feel empowering to me as well as being really hilarious when it comes to the subtle way she explains our situation. Janelle's vision and sound make me want to tune in and "Power Up" to the new 'Droid Rebel Alliance and Get Free Crew.' The message is clear and what I want to hear. We are all brothers and sisters and even if they 'take our wings, we're still going to fly.' I can't wait to see her come alive again this weekend on Saturday Nite Live!!
and so BTW: wHAT"S GOING ON? Why isn't Janelle Considered an 'Associated Artist' with Prince live on Electric Lady CD etc? 2Gether 4Ever

Janelle Monae is the BEST artist to appear in as long as I can remember.

For the same reason Madonna isn't. Or No Doubt isn't. Or Kate Bush isn't.

Yes--Prince appears on No Doubt's track "Waiting Room" (on Rock Steady) with Gwen Stefani appearing on his "So Far, So Pleased" (Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic), he's on Kate Bush's "Why Should I Love You?" (The Red Shoes) and she shows up on "My Computer" (Emancipation), he's on two tracks on Madonna's Like a Prayer album ("Love Song" is a duet, he does guitar (uncredited) on "Act of Contrition" and "Keep It Together"). He's worked with these artists in relatively minor ways, but as with Monae, he's not really a regular or shaping presence in their work as a whole. They're not "Prince protege"'s in the way most of the associated artists (discussed here) are, and their fan bases are mostly separate from Prince's, or with only some overlap.
You could say any of those people are "Associated Artists," but generally if people are going to talk about them, they'll do it over on Music: Non-Prince. Which is where there's tons of Monae talk, if you want it.

I bought Electric Lady on the strength of the Prince collaboration and am so glad I did.
Janelle's two albums are astonishing. I generally just don't get modern R&B but there is such an interesting sensibility here, such audacity, such confidence.

you know he will.. We shall see. That song raises your energy level. It has a lot of pumping funk in it. My niece plays Janelle's CD in her car 24/7, and is now ecstatic that she is going to see Janelle and Prince perform live for the first time.
