ANDY ALLO - LAST NIGHT LIVE IN B'HAM, UK Hi Orgers,
I had the pleasure of seeing Andy live in a freezing cold Birmingham last night - she was GREAT !! Seriously, the girl cuts it as a frontwoman !!!
Despite there only being about 100 people in the crowd, she and the band gave us a really good show. People Pleaser, without the horns, worked great with the guitarist picking up the duties instead ! Yellow Gold was also very powerful ! Set list was a mix of Superconductor and, I guess, her first album (I don't have this YET - I still enjoyed the songs I didn't know) along with a couple of surprise covers !
Her vocals were excellent - warm, delicate and vulnerable when they needed to be and pretty strong on other occasions..... and she has such an endearing smile and personality !
I took a mate along with me - he'd not heard any of her songs nor seen any footage....within 2 songs he was in love !!! His new fantasty aside, he thought it was "fantastic" !!
This woman needs to be playing (and filling ) bigger venues !
I know some Prince fans gave her a hard time for having a place in the NPG without, perhaps, having the guitar chops to justify it - but I think Prince was just schooling her. She was pretty polished as a front woman last night.
One thing though Andy - Birmingham is usually somewhat warmer than Glasgow (that's way up North) and we don't have any sheep - it's the UK's second biggest city with an industrial heritage...not the countryside I think you must have seen the sheep during your drive toward B'ham ! Anyway, it must be like 20*c warmer than Minneapolis in the winter !!!
Please don't let the low turn out put you off from returning to our fine city....it was a cold Monday night (though everyone there will still have enjoyed the show) and next time, as the word spreads, there will be more there to party with you.
For those Prince fans who have just dismissed her, (for whatever probably pre-conceived notions they hold), you're missing out ! Give her a try and get to (at least) one of her Euro tour shows if you can ! I wish I was going to more !
Well done Andy and thanks for a soulful, funky and even semi rockin' night ! REAL DEAL ! You go girl !!

I can only add that Andy was great last night in Birmingham, the U.K's *3rd* city.

Wasn't there supposed to be a deluxe version of her cd coming out? Did it ever?

How big is the band she's traveling with? Change it one more time..

lezama said:How big is the band she's traveling with? In Birmingham she had a band of 4 (drums, bass, guitar & keyboards) - echoing earlier comments despite the cold (band members all kept their coats on!) / small crowd she put on a great show and made a real effort to engage with the audiance.

Thanks for the great review, the only bad thing I have read about her concerts so far, is that they aren't long enough and should go for longer.

Wasn't there supposed to be a deluxe version of her cd coming out? Did it ever? The last thing I read about it was that Andy said to ask Prince when it was going to be released, and Prince is saying that Andy won't release it, so who knows what the hold up is, but it would be the perfect time to release it while she is touring. Thanks Naffi.
Well I reckon she would have sold at least 50 copies on Monday night had it been available - would've paid for the support act and maybe even a coat !

I attended the Glasgow show and, especially considering it was the first date, her performance was excellent. She performed well above my expectations. The lack of a horn section didn't have the negative impact I expected..the band were tight and she's a good vocalist with a real audience rapport due to her personality.
A good pick by Prince, the girl has genuine talent. I look forward to hearing what she does next and I'll certainly attend more concerts if she turns up.
As an aside, her sister ran the small merchandise stall..a very nice lady! "I'm much too hot to be cool"
