Jesse Johnson's guitar solo on "Toast To The Party Girl" is the best solo ever!

Seriously, it gets me everytime, it's so melodic, fast, insane, groovy...What an incredible guitarist...probably the best funk guitarist of all time! eek

Roger was great at what he did, but I saw him several times live and never saw him bust a guitar solo of that type.

I have listened to funk all my life and I can safely say Jesse is the best or one of the best GUITARIST that has ever played that particular type of music. The only other funk guitarist possibly better than Jesse is Eddie Hazel, who sadly had his career cut short.

Jesse, like Eddie has absorbed everything there ever was to absorb from Jimi Hendrix, but his playing, technique and tone are a bit cleaner, more refined & obviously funkier..

The guitar playing on the last Time album is just insane, his rythm arrangements are very intricate, and his solos are masterful. Same for the Pandemonium album.

To be honest I am not a huge fan of Jesse's singing, but as a guitar player, he is unbeatable. I wish he plays all over the next D'Angelo album, though I doubt he will and that LP will probably never come out.

You need to listen to more music...

These are great guitarists, but I am focusing on FUNK, & my title was tongue in cheek wink

It's funny how people criticize Jesse but are unable to name anyone better, except Eddie Hazel, which I had to mention myself. Telling me to listen to more music...Sorry, but why not contribute to the discussion instead? How about mentioning Catfish Collins? Michael Hampton? Vernon Reid? Garry Shider? Who are your favourite funk guitar players?

Prince is more than just a funk guitarist, he's a full blown producer, singer multi-instrumentalist, composer...

Jesse Johnson is a rock guitarist, not funk.yed he played im a funk band but he is not a funk guitar player.my favorite funk guitar players are Sugarfoot Bonner, Jimmy Nolen and Nile Rogers. But i don 't like to classify.my favotite guitar players are Hendrix, Santana , Prince Ernie Isley, Larry Coreyell, George Benson, Grant Green and many others. And yes there are many great guitarists, no one is the best

That's really interesting! I agree that Jesse has picked up a lot from Hendrix, and he really rocks (Skillet, Sick, Blondie), I still think he's quite funky, he plays a lot of tasty funky licks wth The Time on Pandemonium & Condensate...usually before bursting into a rock solo, that's kinda his trademark!

I am so glad you mentioned Nile Rodgers, how could I forget him, he is pure funk genius.

Do you like Wes Montgomery? He's my favourite jazz guitarist by far.

No, i didn 't listen too Wes as much i would like to.I like Grant Green, Larry Coreyell, John Mclaugin, Al Dimeola of course, but it 's not flesh that i 'm into.i like feel and emotion much more. Jesse is a great player,, but i think he have a tendency to overplay. It 's like he is on auto pilot when he starts to repeat fast pentatonic blues cliches.I think Jesse is not a good composer of guitar solos with a few exceptions like Im Just Wanting You.Jesses guitar playing on it is a master class and very memorable.
