Apolllonia made a funny comment about "The Glamorous Life" being removed from their album.I'm paraphrasing, but she said something like..
"I was the new girl in the group,so I kept my cool about it....but Brenda and Susan really let Prince have it" "They were furious about not getting that song"
That is funny!
I can see the tenured members of Vanity 6 not holding back!

It didn't take 5 days to record, or more accurately it took 5 days over a period of several months. Prince recorded very quickly and could dfinitely have provided Jill enough songs but it seems for some reasons he wanted to do something special with her and in the end the quality of her album was worth the while. She probably was frustrated by the time it took but now let's keep in mind that it wasn't as if Prince owed her an album or anything: everyone and their cousin in Minneapolis wanted Prince to write an album for them and release it on Paisley Park, I think it was his prerogative to decide who would have an album and when, wasn't it? Jill finally got one, many didn't.
Here's what he could have done with Jill Jones....
Jill Jones 'Jill Jones' (release date: December 1984)
Side One---
Sugar Walls
Wednesday
Blue Limousine
Side Two---
Extralovable
Baby You're A Trip
G-Spot
Notice I gave her "Blue Limousine" She sings backup vocals on that song anyway, and since Apollonia 6 was a temporary project (after Vanity left,Prince lost interest in this group and their days were numbered),I think it should have gone to Jill.
The two singles could have been "Sugar Walls" and "Blue Limousine".
Yes,Sheena Easton did a good job with "Sugar Walls",but Jill could have done a good job, too.
"Wednesday" is the tune that Jill was supposed to sing in the movie. How cool would it have been to have gotten this track on her debut album back then?
How do y'all know what Jill sang backup on?
I have listened to Apollonia 6 and Sheila E's 1984 albums more than friggin' Lovesexy, and I never picked this out. |

Sheila's looks alone! Would have given her a top ten pop single. Even if she sung "Sex Shooter". It was the combination of looks (similar to Prince's), her timbale playing, charisma & sexiness that made her irristable.. Jill although pretty!.Eye doubt would have had the success Sheila had...Plus Prince put Sheila in the opening slot of the mega "Purple Rain tour. She couldn't lose either way!! will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. |

If you ask me, in hindsight, Vanity 6 probably could've morphed into "Jill 6" and given the group at least 1-2 more years of shelf life to sizzle before JJ defects and gets her proper solo intro. |

What is the source for the belief that TGL or other songs were originally meant for A6? I know Apollonia had a quote saying something like "One of the things I wasn't allowed to talk about back then was how The Glamorous Life was written about me." But is there an official source for saying the song was really going to be done by A6, especially since no version of their recording has ever surfaced? (In sharp contrast to, say, Manic Monday.)
I just wonder because a lot of this seems like hearsay. Or, more probably as I see it, Prince had some lyrics floating around ("She wears a long fur coat of mink...") that Apollonia had already heard and Prince then later paired them with some music.
I can't remember where I read it,but there were several songs that were intended for Apollonia 6.Not sure if this info is correct, but it's often been said that these are the songs...
"The Glamorous Life"
"17 Days" (Brenda on lead vocals)
"Manic Monday"
"Take Me With U" (Prince later shortened "Computer Blue" to make room for it on his own album)
Apolllonia made a funny comment about "The Glamorous Life" being removed from their album.I'm paraphrasing, but she said something like..
"I was the new girl in the group,so I kept my cool about it....but Brenda and Susan really let Prince have it" "They were furious about not getting that song"
i could see Vanity doing Glamorous Life easily.
A V6 + Sheila E dual GL would have been eve hotter |

that's an interesting idea.Jill was singing backup for Vanity 6 on the '1999' tour anyway. She's certainly a better vocalist than Vanity or Apollonia. In the "1999" music video, she is wearing lingerie and acting all sexy,so I think she could have pulled it off. |

It's easy to tell when Jill is singing backup. She has a very strong, distintive voice that those other female proteges don't have.So you can always tell when she's on a record, providing "support" to the (sometimes) weak vocals.
Listen to "The Belle Of St. Mark".Sheila sings the verses (obviously),but notice how much more powerful the vocals on the chorus are. That's Jill, pumping up Sheila's vocals.
Same with "Blue Limousine".Brenda sounds fine on the verses, but listen to Jill singing on the chorus, with that powerful voice. That certainly isn't Susan or Apples
Jill was very useful in the Prince camp. She made those proteges sound good and of course, she contributed to some of Prince's own music,as well.

Her voice also blended very well, but you're right! I thought it was stacked vocals from the lead singer in those 2 examples. |

The song "Lady Cab Driver" actually features her vocals stacked with Prince's...this song is basically a Prince/Jill duet and of course, that's her playing the "cab driver" that has sex with Prince, lol. |

Jill could've dropped something as soon as she was seen in the videos from the 1999 era. There was interest then. There was a buzz about her. People wanted to know who she was. She pulled off the blonde hair, cap, glasses, & sexy gear. |

Sheila got where she is because she is a hard-working and talented musician. I don't think anyone can claim otherwise.
As far as her solo work goes, she associated herself with Prince and her biggest hits are Prince-produced tracks, so of course there is going to be a link there. That's just how it goes. People are always gonna want to hear her do Glamorous Life.
To be honest, she gets more props for her talent and abilities outside of working with Prince than a lot of other Prince-associated artists. |
