Jill Jones
In my opinion Jill Jones is the worst protégé ever. Everything about her is so dull. Prince spent four years working with Jill creating her debut album and frankly it's a mess. And her collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto is shameful. It would have been better if she posed for Playboy, although she doesn't have much to show. She's no Vanity.
What do y'all think? | |

What about the fact that, unlike some of the other female proteges,Jill can actually sing?
I like her but I think her career suffered from bad marketing decisions. For example, her debut album should have been completed and released in late 1984/early 1985,so that she could have taken advantage of the Purple Rain hype.Imagine if Prince had given her the songs "Sugar Walls" and "Blue Limousine"...that's two strong singles that would have made her a star!

Well I wasn't just talking about vocal abilities. She doesn't have that x factor. She just doesn't. Madonna and Janet ( or Vanity and Sheila E ) aren't the best vocalists around but they have charisma. That's the problem with Jill.
And about her singing... she ain't no Teena Marie.
"her debut album should have been completed and released in late 1984/early 1985,so that she could have taken advantage of the Purple Rain hype." - basically you're saying it yourself, she doesn't have enough to offer so she needs the Purple Rain hype to succeed.
A lot of other singers suffered from bad marketing decisions but that didn't stop their further success, development, artistic growth. It seems like she didn't even know what she wanted to do with her career. Her best stuff is that moaning on Lady cab driver.
I read somewhere she opened for Jody Watley and the crowd just stood there with their arms crossed the whole time. Yeah, that's the "Jill Jones effect". | |
