3rdEyeGirl: Yea or Nay

Personally I love 3rdEyeGirl. I think its just the band to bring out the rock n' roll. Of course I love the NPG as well, but I feel they were more geared towards funk and jazz. Not that they can't rock, they can and do.

But I heard a complaint today (from a woman no less), that 3rdEyeGirl is no good because they are "just a girl band." I never really thought of them that way. Not in the sense that Apallonia 6 was a "girl band." To me 3rdEyeGirl is not a girl band, but a Rock Band. Am I way off here?

I like it. This phase in Prince's life to play rock songs seems to be giving the guy a good energy. He seems happy, and that's the important thing.

I like that it's shaken up the setlist and his sensibility, instead of retreading that vegas soul revue act for the 8th year running with increasingly interchangeable band members.

But they need some more rehearsal time.

They are very good. They also give Prince's band somethign that has been missing for years; personality!~

Gimmick! Kind of a sloppy band actually. Donna is all show and technical, Hasn't anything to say. Ida is a great bassplay, not much of a vocalist. Hannah is just darling, a good looking girl but not that tight of a drummer.

So no, Prince has had better lineups and set lists.

they come off 2 me as just 3 chics he threw 2gether 2 pull off a rock cool image.hannah is sooo pretty yet boring as hell as a drummer she has no flare and style like sheila or john.the idea of what he is doing is cool if he had of stayed behind the action and sorta played them off like modern version of the bangles or something

I might agree with the gimmicky thing. But only in part. I really feel that what the NPG needs is fire. Granted 3rdEyeGirl is not as technically advanced as NPG, but what they have is FIRE. Their youth and energy is what I think Prince sees there. Besides, some of the best rock is the simplest music.

I love the simplicity and rawness of it...they dont get in his way...and it's clear he's having FUN....

I'm kind of over th npg, even tho it was awesome...it;s a large lumbering, cumbersome entity that seems too much rt now....it must be massively expensive to run as well and I can't blame prince for stripping it all down ...it's letting him love it again, you can see it, and hear it!

When he's done, he'll be on to the next thing ::shrugs:: A happy Prince is enough for me biggrin

^^ Yes, he is having fun on stage. I agree with that. He is strutting around, being playful with the audience, and looks like he's having a good time. smile cool

Just went to the two Ogden shows and am set for two more tonight. I was a little skeptical going in, after seeing several shows with the NPG. But I can say now, 3rdEyeGirl is NOT sloppy. They were really tight. They didn't sing at all so I can't speak to that, but Donna is an amazing guitarist, Ida kicked, and Hannah is an outstanding drummer. Obviously they haven't been playing with Prince for very long, but these are top notch musicians.

Rock bottom awesome.

I'd have to see them live to comment. How many who are posting have? Just curious.

They're ok, so yay.
But they won't last very long. Prince can't possibly push this band to the stylistic limits he could the NPG.

But, it's nice that he's doing something different on stage these days. I mean, his last 7 or 8 some odd years have really just been the same old Musicology show (complete with recycled stage). I miss the days when every year came with a new look, a new sound, and the majority of songs were new songs being played.

I doubt those will return, but it's nice to see him doing a few different things these days. I do wish he'd have the bravery to play 90% new or unreleased material.
