Sheila's going to raise the bar

Renowned drummer Sheila E promises to 'raise the bar' at the Playboy Jazz Festival

By Olu Alemoru, Staff Writer

Percussion icon Sheila E., who electrified audiences in a show-stopping debut at last year’s Playboy Jazz Festival, has promised to “raise the bar” as she plans to make a back-to-back appearance at the acclaimed event.

The daughter of renowned sessionist Pete Escovedo and former drummer and musical director of Prince’s New Power Generation, will join fellow headliners Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Hugh Masekela and India Irie, in celebrating the Festival’s 35th anniversary on June 15 and 16th at the Hollywood Bowl.

“After the crazy time last year when we had drummers and salsa dancers, we expect to raise the bar this year,” she said in a telephone interview with The Wave.

“I have a few ideas right now, but I can’t tell you, we’ll know when we get there; I can’t blow the surprise.”

And then there's more stuff about the other musicians playing at the festival, but I don't care about them:

I hope she adds some new numbers from her 3 1st albums to the show

Eddie M has been rocking with her

She gives you an experience that still feels like it could be 1985/86 Romance 1600

She's amazing live. I love that she added "Koo Koo" and "Erotic City" back to her set. I wish she'd do the same with "Love on a Blue Train." "Pride and the Passion" would be a good live jam, too.

I don't know what her set list was at last year's Playboy Jazz Festival. I would assume she doesn't do her normal act, except for The Glamorous Life, but I could be wrong.

A few weeks ago I saw video clips on youtube of last year's festival, and Sheila was the bomb.com, as usual. Granted I don't know where you go from having a full samba school complete with dancers opening your show, but I bet homegirl is going to bring it for this year's festival.

I saw her last year in London and those two songs where the highlight for me.

Yep, Koo Koo, Erotic City,

the Belle of St Mark (Glamorous Life)

she's done (not often) Olivers House

I saw her do Merci4theSpeedofaMadClownInSummer live back in 1985, and it was hot and like the bands back then very much like the album cut

Love on a Blue Train, Hon E Man, 2Sexy, and a few others

Even 'covering' a few Prince & the Time/Apollonia 6 cuts would be hot:Blue Limousine, A Million Miles(I Love U) Pop Life, Girls & Boys, maybe a few SOTT/Lovesexy cuts

Love Sheila E!! Wish her and P would reconcile. I'm happy she's getting her due and I'm sure she'll rock the house at the festival.
