If they r close 2 Prince & make him happy. Why can't U accept that? Larry is his childhood idol & Shelby his best friend. Deal with it or don't go to his shows anymore & close ur Org account & follow another boring artist.

Shelby give P's music a soulful gospel feel that you would get from people like Mavis Staples or The Pointer Sisters, whom I love so Shelby's doing just fine.

the 2 concerts i've been to i liked her. i thought she added to the show.

I think the Larry G reason are totally different, because he isn't in the band, and Larry is connected to a certain change in Prince overall

When I first saw Shelby, she had such a 'big' presence, that i was not used to for women in Prince's band, I know Rosie, had a big voice too but maybe because she was on keys, she wasn't outfront the way Shelby is. I always felt the Shelby from the start should have been moved to a 'protege' or accompanying band performer.

Prince has his reasons 4 what he does. Its a reason 4 him to regroup & freshin up back stage. While he lets Shelby & the back up girls do what they do. Its nothing wrong with that & support him.

Peeps here seem like they always try 2 find reasons to tear down anything he does or get involved in. Its getting old & some need 2 just leave The Org & get in2 another boring unexciting artist.

By the way Larry was apart of the NPG @ one time. Prince would have found a spiritual path either way. Peeps need to stop blaming Larry & look within themselves. feel Prince is a better person & artist now. Its possible he was in a bad spirit & needed counseling after losing both parents in 6 month period..Shelby & Larry are not going anywhere soon. So get use to it or exit..

I agree that tearing people down is not needed, I don't get into doing that.

Like I said with my take on Shelby, it was what it was, I didn't hate her in the band, I just always 'hear' her leading a band of her own

When was Larry a part of the NPG?

Larry joined the NPG after the New Power Soul album period & during the RaveUn2 period. Larry was his bass player...

They also lived 2gether after Prince relocated him 2 the twin cities...

I have to agree with Kool here. And I think I know what you think the reason is as well Kool.... and I have to agree with you.

Some people like the image and the "female coyness" better than just good singing. It goes with Prince's image he has established in the past with having nubile, sexy kitten sounding females on stage instead of powerhouse vocalists.

The thing is... It seems to me that Prince has gotten away from that image of having sex kittens around him. Even the women he "sponsor"/ protogees, he pumps them up as having musical talent... even if they really don't have much talent. Not like Vanity 6, Diamond and Pearl, Carmen Electra etc who didn't really have musical talent and Prince didn't bother trying to convince us otherwise.

The man has grown older... his taste in women has matured. At least his public choices have... who knows what goes on in his private life

You made some very good points, Prodigalfan. I know what you mean about Kool's reasons for feeling that way. I look at it this way, regardless if some fans have a problem with who Prince shares the stage with, at the end of the day, whether some fans like it or not, Prince is the one who will have the last word/decision on who he chooses to invite into his personal and professional life, not the fans.

and I really believe that a certain bass player has opinion in who Prince performs with or plays with (personal and professional)

I think Shelby J. has huge potential, in the same way that Andy Allo shines now. Andy Allo to me could become a superstar!! I love Superconductor! I did not care for her as much with NPG at first but then seen some videos of her performing acoustic live solo and wow..could see she had potential. I'm not sure what kind of music Shelby would do on her own but an NPG gospel style cd with Shelby on vocals could work??? Not sure if I care for "North Carolina" song she released but no doubt she has it.

If Prince keeps her around to sing 3 or 4 songs people will be pissed. You see people they pay outtragous $$$ to see him live and they want to hear him sing. So anytime it starts to become more of the _______ show and not the Prince show then they will be pissed. I would hope he would cultivate her like he did Andy..I could see her shining solo with the NPG! maybe a gospel cd with NPG!! Larry and Prince with Shelby on vox!?

Some singing styles are for some people, and some are not. I like powerful singers where they don't have to struggle, so-to-speak, to bring out an emotion in a song, because their voices can carry it. Then you have Andy Allo, whose has what some say is a softer voice, fit for specific types of songs, like the ballads she sings along with some pop/pop ballads.r&b flavored tracks on her previous album, and a mixture of flavors on the Superconductor album. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

How come it's always dog the person but let Prince off the hook all the TIME!? He chooses who and how he uses people. Shelby didn't ruin Prince's music and Larry didn't brainwash him. He made choices you all don't like. You have a right to bitch, but really- why blame anyone BUT Prince? Shelby has a really great voice, but not my cup of tea with Prince. Larry is an insane bass player and great performer - but I'd rather see him on tour with his band and not WITH Prince. See how PRINCE is the issue??

Shelby gave a very good interview on the Spreecast last nite. She is very positive. can c why Prince adores her..

Cmon really? I think Meshell would jump at the chance to play with oner of her heroes. Take a year off to tour with him. It would be an insane combination which could lead to in studio collaborations and who knows what. Sadly the thing preventing this from happening is the Big White Hat in the room. But you just agreed Prince makes his own band choices, so regardless of Meshell being Bi, I don't see whatt Larry's views on life, related to his religious beliefs, has to do with Prince making his own decisions on who to hire in his own band. After all, if you're saying Prince has to clear it with Larry first, then in that case, W or L would never have been allowed to converse or able to stand in the presence of Prince, ever again.

Also, now I know why O4FS said he thinks a certain bass player may have an opinion of who gets to play in Prince's band, but I thought OF4S meant Ida. My bad. However, I still don't agree that Larry could have that much power over Prince's decision to pick who can play in Prince's band. Or maybe that's just because I can't accept someone having that kind of power over anyone. :shrug:

at this point, it would be cool to see/hear Shelby as a protege of sorts ( I know she had/has her own band before Prince) but to see her doing a certain style of music similar to Prince that reflects her, and same with Andy, both expressing different genre of music
