"A funky night with fDeluxe at the Dakota Sunday was a funky night in the Twin Cities. fDeluxe (formerly the Family) was at the Dakota for some vintage Minneapolis Sound funk. I caught fDeluxe’s early set. The Family was a Prince project in 1985 featuring St. Paul Peterson and Susannah Melvoin (Wendy’s twin sister and Prince’s then-girlfriend) on lead vocals. Peterson, Melvoin and original Family members saxophonist Eric Leeds and drummer Jellybean Johnson decided to reunite last year and make a new album ("Gaslight"). However, Prince owned the name “the Family” so the new project was released under fDeluxe. After gigs in New York and Washington D.C. opening for Sheila E last week, fDeluxe sounded more like a band than a project at the Dakota. Leeds was the star of the 80-minute first set. I really loved their album, and bought it right away when it was released. It came signed! I still listen to it too. I'm not into remixes, but I did buy this if only for Swang's remix of @8--slowed down funk. Kind of seductive.

I think they have truly proven they are very talented in their own right and didn't need Prince for too much, except to kick off their careers. Not to mention, they are so cool with their fans and really seem to love and respect each other.
