Vanity: "Undress" This song came on my ipod today.... and wow! It's really good!!!
I'm curious about the production of this. The music sounds very Jesse Johnson......or possibly Oliver Lieber? It has that Minny Sound 1nce removed.
And Vanity's vocals...... this is the best she's sounded! I LOVE Vanity, dont' get me wrong.... but is she singing this? Esp since her other solo stuff her vocals seemed to go down (I know she's not a "singer" but she always carried her Vanity 6 stuff WAY better than Apollonia for example.
Any info appreciated. | |

True! Vanity never sounded better. Jesse really brought out her soul in her vocals just with this one track....Jesse killed it with that bass guitar.I couldn't stop playing this track when it came out. Especially like her Soul Train per4mance of this track. She was so hot. I couldn't keep my eyes off of her...

So it is Jessie ? I couldn't find credits online. It sounds like his style and the same synth patches he used around then. Is this the only track he did for her? You think Tamara or anyone is helping with the vocals? If it's all Vanity he should have produced all her stuff. I love Mechanical Emotion but her vocals are so weird. While we're on the subject, who sings lead on Blue Limousine? I think Brenda but it sounds ki da like Jill?

Ok I'll answer ur purple curiosity ...
"Undress" is the only track unfortunately he did for Vanity...It does sound like he used another vocalist for Vanity to sing along with. It kinda sounds like its Jesse's voice used on the original vocal..Could be Tamara. U can hear clearly on this movie version U have that she is singing along with someone else.."Mechanical Emotion" is another hot song I couldn't stop playing. Morris's vocal on there is on point & he brought out the song & sexual chemistry of it. i agree Vanity's vocals we're weird sounding on there. But it worked..
Brenda sung lead on "Blue Limousine" But Prince used Jill as a back up vocalist. I always wondered why Prince didn't use Brenda more often. She clearly had the better voice out of all his women singers back then... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Jerry Hubbard played on mostly all of Jesse's songs he was one of his band members. But that song is definitely a Jesse song. No matter who it is supposedly credited to. The Vanity 6 album was supposedly written with Vanity also(Hmmmmm)But we know who did everything on there...Did U see the "Soul Train" per4mance of it?
I don't know which Linn drum machine he is using. it sounds like a Linn drum machine mixed with a live one on the bottom.
U right Blue Limousine is one of the best on that unappreciated album. It sounds like Brenda(Lead) & Jill & Lisa....

If you watched the movie or listened to the soundtrack, Jesse actually produced another track on Action Jackson the sexy Faraway Eyes. Jesse's guitar licks are all over this. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I figure Jesse wrote it though I guess it's possibe Jerry wrote the main riff and bass part and Jesse produced it? Or maube Jerry played keys i forget.
anyway it's awesome. I like the movie version better than soul train version.
I don't think that's Linn. Unless it's Linn 9000 which came later. Whatever drum machine it is it got used a lot.... like on Paula Abdul's album... lots of 80s stuff. But the Linn has characteristic sounds and I don't think that's it.

It was written and produced by Jesse Johnson. He also wrote and produced another song "Faraway Eyes".Both songs can be found on the Action Jackson movie soundtrack.
Around this time,Vanity was also preparing another solo album, and Jesse was one of the producers.I think Jam and Lewis were also going to get involved. The album never materialized.

I knew this and like soulAlive said Jam & Lewis & Jesse Johnson were workingo n material for a 3rd solo album for Vanity and at the time the drugs were so prevalent that the album got scrapped and it's rumored that there are some unreleased songs written & produced by jesse johnson for Vanity laying around in a vault somewhere....Like i said its just RUMOR!!! If this is true i would LOVE to hear this. I heard that Jesse & Vanity were really good friends!!!! I can only imagine how this 3rd solo effort would have sounded.....SO FUNKY yet SENSUAL on Vanity's part........

I too would love to hear the tracks from this album (if they really exist).Jam and Lewis could have done for Vanity what they had previously done for Janet Jackson.....take her career to a whole new level. And with Jesse in the mix as well, there is no way that Vanity could have failed.

As far as "Mechanical Emotion", I believe Morris programmed the Beat as well......

So glad somebody is giving some credit to these songs. Both 'Undress' and 'Mechanical emotion' were very hot and ahead of their time in my opinion. Vanity did sing on these songs but I agree sounds like someone backed her up vocally. Jesse is so talented, in fact, we all know that was a special time for all those guys and creativity was running in their blood then. Too bad somthng else was running through Vanity at the same time!
Really tho, I just cannot understand why some or at least one of those guys would just come on here and set several records straight for us. These are easy questions. It's not like people are asking who people's baby mama's are. They could just say 'Yeas, I wrote it' or 'No Morris did not play the drums', or whatever. As fans we only want to know who did what, just like would be on an album sleeve (back in the day), unless you're Prince and you use some other name, but event then the real fans could see through 'Jamie Starr'.
Thanks for bringing back some memories. I still play Mechanical Emotion all the time, especially when we have people over and we all start thinking we are 21 again. Oops, that's another story. Genius is born, not made. Prince is a Genius. No question. RIP Legend.

I love "Mechanical Emotion"! That's a really hot groove...sounds alot like the Minneapolis Sound and it's the funkiest track on Vanity's Wild Animal album. It's a shame that there was no video for it.

Yeah, that could have been hot. She never even performed that on any show, that I know of. Unless somebody got something out there. But most of her stuff has resurfaced on the Internet, including old TV performances and interviews. Genius is born, not made. Prince is a Genius. No question. RIP Legend.
