Morris Day and The Time Pensacola, FL October 19, 2012 review I went and saw the Time at the Interstate Fair in Pensacola, FL on October 19, 2012. This was my first show of the year, but my 62nd overall.
The day started as it often does, with me feeling like ass. My stomach issues have gotten out of control to the point where I rarely even leave the house except to go to work. Well I wasn't going to miss the fellas in my home town after not seeing them in over a year and a half so I pulled it together as best as I could. I met the fellas at their hotel and went to sound check. Then we went to eat and then I chilled out while the band got ready for the show. Jason met up with me and we rode with the band to the show. Hung out backstage until showtime
Here is the line up:
Morris Day-Vocals and Cool Jellybean Johnson-Drums Monte Moir-Keyboards Tori "Freak Juice" Ruffin-Guitar Ricky "Freeze" Smith-Bass Jeff McNeely-Keyboards Sylvester Donald-Valet and Dancer
Here is the setlist with my comments to follow:
1. DAT Intro 2. Intro 3. Cool 4. Get it up 5. Pandemonium 6. Chocolate 7. Wild and Loose 8. The Stick 9. Blondie 10. My Drawers 11. Fishnet 12. The Oak Tree 13. Jerk Out 14. 777-9311 15. Girl- short instrumental 16. Sometimes I get lonely- one verse by Morris off stage 17. Gigolos get lonely too 18. If the Kid can't make you come 19. The Walk 20. The Bird Encore 21. Tricky 22. Jungle Love
As the Dat intro started, we took our spot on the side of the stage where we had a great view of the show. The band came on and played a new intro. While I hate to see Skillet go, it was very Cool to see them do this and then go into Get it up like the old days. Speaking of Cool, it followed along with a twofer off on Pandemonium. "What Time is it?" Time to get Wild and Loose of course and work the Stick in my ride. One of my favorite parts is the Rock of Blondie and My Drawers. Tori was really ripping it up.
The solo hits Fishnet and Oak Tree kept the party going along with the Time's only top 10 pop hit Jerk Out. The band slowed it down with a trio of ballads and then the ladies got on stage to show their stuff for If the kid can't make you come. the first of the new dances the Walk was next followed by the crowd pleasing Bird. All of Jason's family plus Ben and Bree all got on stage for it. This closed the normal portion of the show and the band came back for an encore of tricky and Jungle Love.
We hung out backstage for quite awhile and then I went back to the hotel with the band. A few of us went for a couple drinks after that. Another awesome show. Hopefully it won't take me a year and a half to see them again.

They should do some songs by Prince and some of the other proteges
just to mix it up
Kiss, Party Up, Uptown, Lady Cab Driver, Baby I'm a Star, Movie Star, High Fashion, America, Pop Life, She's Always In My Hair, AnotherLover..., Hot Thang,
there are a lot of songs that would easily fit within their set list and spruce it up

looks like nothing has changed. same show from the 90s. I would go if they would play some new stuff. They HAVE to be bored with this show. I get tired of reading the same setlist, nevermind playing it

It's really disappointing they don't play more of Morris's solo songs, Purple Rain songs, O7ven songs. Anything. Its always great to see them, but it's shocking how stagnant the setlist is. I guess for them it's just easy money to do the same thing over and over like Chuck E. Cheese robots.
